One of the Greatest Performances Ever by a Vol?

He's not better than Grant Williams. Not yet anyway. If he consistently performs at at or even near this level the rest of the year then yes.
Different players playing different positions. It is difficult to find a player who plays the floor better than DK. I think he has the edge over GW, but he has not yet played half of a season. I will have to wait until after the NCAAs to make a final decision.

King never shot outside so it didn't really matter

I think he shot quite a few from the outside, but not too many from beyond where the 3-point line now exists. He didn’t need to. If he was guarded closely that far out he’d blow right by the defender. He would also easily find Grunfeld, Jackson, or any other teammate open for a better look. His game really had no weaknesses. Maybe the GOAT at driving to the rim from the left side during fast breaks. He was only 6’7”, but no center could consistently stop him from scoring under the basket using his quickness.

UT’s GOAT and it’s not even close.

Barnes' doing what he does best
I'd actually argue that getting Knecht and coaching him up is a great example of Barnes improving on one of his few weaknesses: making good use of the transfer portal. James Daniel III is probably the 2nd best player he's gotten from the portal, and the gap between Daniel and Knecht is immense.

Tony White’s 51 versus Auburn. Lofton versus Texas. Houston versus LSU. Whoever Ron Widby scored 50 against. King in multiple games. Dale Ellis’ and Howard Woods’ defense versus Ralph Sampson.

Carlus Groves defending Shaquille O’Neal and having the self discipline to NOT end Dale Brown’s life.

Michael Brooks going off versus Kentucky at Stokely around 1984 - although that was more like an insane outside shooting streak at the end of the game. He kept draining top of the key jumpers, each one a foot or two deeper than the previous made shot.

Edit: I meant to include Grant versus Vandy in the 1st paragraph.

Yeah he was pretty lethal around the free throw extension

Nice game but it's not in our school top 10 in scoring for a single game.
Right, but of course I was looking at more than just raw point total, some of his other feats I noted in combination with total points suggest a more than elite single game performance imo. Thanks!

Some of you stat gurus will know, but I can’t imagine what Knecht did against FL wasn’t one of the greatest performances ever in a Vol uniform.

- 39 total points
- 13 of 23 from the field, starting 9 of 10
- 66% from Three on 6 attempts
- 100% from the charity stripe on 9 attempts
- 22 first half points
- 14 pts in a 4 minute stretch
- Scored the Vols’ last 20 pts of the 1st half
- Set the Vols’ all time record for most points scored in 3 consecutive games (103)

This is legendary stuff no? 🍊🏀❤️
Bernard King was doing this every game and no 3 Pt line. DK is the best player we’ve had since BK though.

I think Brooks had 36 in that game, with no 3 line, and it was 1985. I was in Stokley for that Sunday afternoon

King wasn't in trouble that much. Knecht is great, but not BK great
King played three years for Tennessee and was SEC player of the year all three years. Nothing against Knecht but he ain’t close to King. I would not have a problem stating King is the greatest player that has ever played in the SEC. But one could argue that.

What’s amazing to me is he wasn’t this good last season in the big sky conference. His continued development is incredible and I’d bet he’s way outperformed Barnes’ expectations when recruiting him.
What's even more amazing it that he had 0 offers coming out of high school. Scouts evidently don't get up to the Dakotas very often.

What----King was caught stealing video equipment from our film room. Everything got swept under the rug because of his talent. There was a set of rules for King and a different set for everyone else on the team.

I won't even mention the crap with the ladies. Dude could definitely hoop though.

He's the best UT player I've seen since Allen Houston
I would say the most gifted offensive player since Allan, certainly. Like AH, his defense will ding him as best all-around player. Guys like that expend so much effort on offense that they just don't have the gas to play elite defense even if they were capable of it.

I wouldn’t argue that King was the best UT player, but, I’ve have problem naming him the best ever in the SEC.

Who was better? Not Maravich. Numbers don't lie.
