Our chances at Oregon.....

Do you think that Butch Jones is going into this or any game thinking it's a L. He's realistic, but I don't want to play for a coach who just wants us to play well. I want one who thinks we can win.

:toast: That is the attitude we need. If, and when, we get beat, don't abandon ship......Stay on board, the sailing WILL get better with our new captain steering the boat.

Or, as some old-timer once said, "If at first the game - or the breaks - go against you, don't let up... put on more steam."

coaches always game plan to win games. they never feel like they will lose as long as, the players execute the game plan as they want them to. That is the rub.

The less talented players cannot execute as well as the more talented players. and coaches struggle to make of the difference with schemes and play calls.

Saban's greatest strength is not X's and O's but his recruiting capabilities..

Realistically, it wouldn't surprise me if the coaches aren't devoting much time to gameplanning for Oregon. This game was scheduled back when we did all our Pac-10 home/aways which started in 2007. Back then, Oregon wasn't the Oregon of now and we weren't the UT of now.

We're just simply not in a position to compete at that level nationally and then turn around and play in Florida against another Top 10 team.

Coaches only have so much time to prepare and install our Off/Def and Oregon is such a departure in terms of Offense/Defense... Florida just makes more sense to gameplan against given they run a much more similar offense to just about every other team on our schedule.

So, long story short, I'm not expecting much. I'm not saying I don't think our team will compete. I think it will. I'm just saying the coaches, at least from a strategic point of view, in my mind will focus on more realistic and important games than @Oregon for the 2nd game of Jones' tenure.

And I'm also not saying Florida is an easier game... it's just a much more logical team to prepare for in terms of impact on recruiting, standing in the SEC and also how far it will carry fan opinion.

I'd far rather beat Florida than Oregon.

I'm sorry, I understand the rationale, however make no mistake they are preparing just as they would for any other top ten opponent. That's why CBJ gets paid almost 3 mil TO COACH!

Our chances at Oregon are indeed very poor this early in the season. Oregon has been building for several years while the Vols have done a terrible job in recruiting the talent required to compete with the likes of Oregon. This one won't be pretty.

I posted this in a different thread, thought I'd post here. I wanted to see average by starter. I took a two-deep depth chart posted in the FF by an Oregon fan for Oregon and looked up the (expected) starter's average ratings on Rivals out of highschool. I also looked at the same information for Tennessee (based on my very rough guess of our first team at this point - WR was the hardest, I think).

Maybe there's something to be said for being evenly matched based on talent. Our defense is clearly more talented than theirs. I also started doing the 2-deep, but didn't finish - based on where I got with that, I think the results would be similar (i.e., equivalent rankings between us and Oregon). I figured our attrition would really hurt us, but maybe it hasn't.

Thought this was interesting and didn't take long (although I wonder if someone else already has done this on VN and I've just not seen it).

I think we hang with them a while and give them a much better game than many expect. In the end, though, I think they wear us down and pull away. They are in the preseason top 5 for a reason.

You do realize those recruiting numbers are someone's subjective opinion when they were 17-18 years old. The game being played isn't subjective and those kids aren't 17-18 any more.

Case in point, your numbers show the qb's as even. That's all you need to know that those numbers don't mean squat.

I make no predictions but, based on what we know about Butch thus far, I believe he will prepare this team for the Oregon game with the following attitude: "This is the kind of game you come to a program like Tennessee to play. Leave no stone unturned, no shred of effort unexpended, no drop of sweat or blood in reserve, and let the proverbial chips (i.e. the scoreboard) fall where they may."

I agree with this 100%. We are Tennessee. Period.

With our offensive line, I do believe we should shorten the game, keep pounding the rock. Oregon has been hurt by the run in the past, most teams get behind early, and start airing it out, trying to keep up. I know our new philosophy is to speed up, but I trust this coaching staff, they will have a plan. I also believe Chip Kelly was the one calling the plays, and may turn out to be one of the better coaches of this decade. Who knows how Oregon would respond to adversity, with a new staff. Things could go our way, like I said earlier, we are LONG overdue for a bounce or two to go our way. What would be considered a "win"? 7 point loss, 10 point loss, close game?

Who knows? The only "win" I consider is a W in the win column. It is time to quit expecting failure, upsets happen every week....Why not us?

I believe Stanford beat them with the run.

I don't care if everyone of them is back, the CEO left. There will be changes, could be better , could be worse, but there will be changes!

Not sure there will be much change. They have had a system in place on both sides of the ball for a while. Yea Chip is gone but this is still a very explosive and very good team. Physical teams like Stanford and AU in particular is how you beat them. Not sure we are physical enough yet. I think if we played them in a few yrs we would be an ideal team to shut them down. And we could be now but not seeing a Jones coached UT Team yet it is hard to tell right now. Hope we brake out the alternate uni's and break out an a$$ kicking. We have lost I think our last 4 to pac 10 teams, no excuse for that.i know we lost 2 to ucla, one to Oregon and think we lost the 2nd game in the home and home with Oregon. Our luck has been just as bad or worse against the ACC but finally ended that streak and the GA Dome streak against NC St last year. Im ready to start beating ranked teams and teams besides the ones we should and havent even done that consistently lately.

Could be a good reality check or a bad one. If we are competitive and play them to the wire or actually beat them just imagine the confidence the team and fans start to get. But if we get blown out how does the team react. A Dooley team would give up and be hard to restore confidence, but think this staff is better equipped to keep the team and fans moving forward. Nobody expects a 10 win season or championship of any kind this year. I just wanna see improvement and a team that plays hard and doesnt give up when things go bad. Im tired of watching that and doubt a Jones coached team will be allowed to give up or quit.jmo

I believe Stanford beat them with the run.

Great points, BigOrangeBob and HuntlandVol.

We should have a good O-line and running game this year. Butch Jones has typically been more of a fast-paced offense kind of guy, but it would be interesting if we tried a more grind-it-out style with Oregon. Keeping their offense off the field and having the "D" rested up when they are out there tends to be the best strategy against Oregon.

So then explain to me how you think Oregon beats us worse than Alabama, if you do not also think that Oregon can beat Bama.

If Oregon out-talents us more than Bama, than they should also beat Bama.

Or, are you saying that Oregon will run up the score and Bama will put on the brakes?

You guys and your star rankings... goodness.

Recruiting rankings actually matter and can be used to predict seasonal outcomes.

Oregon does not beat teams who out recruit them, as a general rule. Neither do 2/3 of the other NCAA football teams. Recently Oregon beat USC who has a higher recruiting average, but lost to Stanford who has a lower recruiting average. Call it a wash, or simply point out that Kiff's teams historically under perform.

The good news for Oregon is that they can recruit at the same level as UT and still be in the top 2 or 3 teams in the PAC. Likewise, UT can recruit at the same level as Oregon, and be mid pack in the SEC (without coaching hindering the talent).

This prediction rate sky rockets when used to predict national championship games. Since 2005 (the farthest back I can go with Rivals recruiting numbers that begin at 2002), the BCS championship game is won almost 90% of the time by the team with the higher recruiting average. The only exception to that rule is when Texas beat USC.
