Overachieved

The offense actually clicked for the first time all year. We have the guys, just need to get on the same page.

With our D and Sampson, if Nico and the receivers play just AT their expected level, anything is possible.

Will be a fun playoff...

Overachieving or not, there are times we could have and should have been better. I'm glad we're playoff bound, but we have a lot of room to improve and that's on the coaches to fix.
Name a team that doesn’t apply to? Just because Oregon made it through unscathed doesn’t mean they played a perfect game every week.

Yeah, we knocked Vandy out of a bowl game. Have they ever been to a bowl game
They have 6 wins and will go to a bowl. James Franklin took them to 3 bowls in a row I think.

They also went to a couple in the 00s. Can’t remember the coaches name.

There were people that really posted “this game is over” after the first play of the Vandy game.
Slow starts are frustrating..
But you got give team credit for not quitting and folding like cheap lawn chair when they fall behind
Vols need improve on lot areas but I think CJH has Tenn on right track Go Vols...

Absolutely not but my expectation in year 4 was to:

Beat Alabama in Neyland
Beat Florida
Beat Oklahoma
Beat Vandy
Make the playoffs

It used to be go to Atlanta but who wants that anymore?
Not this year anyway… let Georgia and Texas go and beat the crap out of each other

I heard during the game we're 122nd in FBS in penalties. Makes it hard to imagine us getting far in the playoffs. But hey it was a great regular season for sure!
Take out DLs lined up in neutral zone and DTs right over the ball 🏈 jumping offsides and we'd be 3rd or 4th. 😳😡🤡

10 wins and a playoff birth, both are more than was expected in the preseason.

Y’all still wanna fire everyone?
Definitely not necessary to fire anyone when a team wins 10 games and makes the playoffs. But, let's not act like the DC and OC couldn't be improved. Banks is solid. But, Halzle probably needs to go.

I would personally like to see Heupel get an OC with a genius X's and O's mind like he has. Halzle isn't it! He also isn't a great recruiter!

Banks has improved the D every year. Statistically, he had an ELITE D this season. But, I still don't feel like he is an elite DC. I am sure many will say I don't know what I am talking about regarding Banks. But, Banks' D was exposed badly by Beck / Bobo that is a very good QB and OC. But, neither have proved to be elite. I hope UT plays a very high powered O and elite QB in the playoffs and Banks proves me wrong. But, I don't see it hapenning. Banks is also a good recruiter, not elite though.

If you want to win 8-10 games every year and make the playoffs 2 of every 5 years, the OC and DC UT has now may get it done. If you want to definitley play for the SEC championship every 3-5 years and be in the playoffs 4 of every 5 years, the OC and DC will need to improve very soon or be replaced.

If Heupel quit at the end of the year and left for Oklahoma, he’d be the reincarnation of Doug Dickey (going by how I’ve heard Dickey described as an innovator and a guy who had TN back on track).
You are correct. He was able to right the ship and it had been a ship treading water for close to 20 years. I was optimistic when he was hired but I never thought he could bring us back as fast as he has.

My point is Vegas had us at a lower win number.

We overachieved that number. I trust Vegas to set those numbers far more than I do fans for a number of reasons
Who did UT beat that they "shouldn't" have? They performed about as expected except for Ark.

IIRC, before the season started (and preseason polls are completely worthless) UT was favored in every game but 3 (OU, Bama, & UGA) BTW, OU's o/u was 7.5 wins. By the time UT played OU, IT was the favorite. That shows you what Vegas thought of OU and they didn't hit their win total.

247 Talent composite has TN as 17th this year. This represents current roster which includes transfers. We beat 3 teams with higher rated talent: Bama, OU and FL. Lost to one with less - Ark.
The way CJH is recruiting we should move higher in the future.

Shouldn’t have is a weird term. Teams lose games they should win constantly. But Bama is the obvious one we “shouldn’t have” given we were the under dog and have a lower team composite talent rating

The Vegas o/u was 8.5. We overachieved that.

Why is that a weird term? I'm pretty sure UT was favored in 10 out 12 games. So UT overachieved by 1 game according to Vegas...which was the OU game that had them favored preseason. By the time the game came around UT was favored.

When your team is good, you're expected to win most, if not all, of your games. A loss or 2 swings it at that level.

We were not favored in 10 games in the preseason.

Weird to say “we overachieved by 1 game” as if that’s a a bad game. When you go 10-2 you can’t do a heck of a lot better than one game

As I said before, preseason rankings are worthless. These things are fluid. As game time rolled around, UT was favored in 10 of those games. They're in the playoffs and most likely hosting a game. Nothing to complain about.

IMO, and the betting lines, UT performed as expected.

GT beating FSU was huge in week zero....no one mentions that as a big win for GT on 12/1. Look at the preseason top 10. The pollsters got 6 correct.

Preseason is what you base over/under achieving on. To consistently increase expectations every time your team wins is an absurd exercise that is only capable of ending in disappointment.

This is why I tend to hang out in the PF. Somehow the posters are FAR more reasonable over there.

We just clinched a spot in the playoffs. We beat Bama, Florida. And we were competitive against GA, in GA. After that tough loss, We needed to blow out UTEP and beat a pretty decent Vandy team to clinch a spot. We did that!! Finished up 10-2 in the toughest conference in the country.

And STILL people be like “Yeah but…if we had a better coach and a better QB we would be undefeated! I expect excellence dammit”.

I agree 8188. Great season!!! I’m celebrating tonight. It’s great to be a Tennessee Vol! Thank you Coach Heup!!! We’ve waited a long time for this.

Ssshhhhhhh

We will have 10,000 idiots in there like all the ones in here claiming they KNEW we were going 10-2 and making the playoffs.

You are 100% correct though. 30 wins in the last 3 years....when 5 years ago we went 4-8 in THE worst season in UT football history is AMAZING. Coqch Hype and this staff have been wonderful and we are VERY LUCKY to have them. God bless them and their families.

4 years ago, we would have dreamed to have an offense, defense, and record like this. Let’s enjoy the ride! Heupel has done an incredible job!
Absolutely!

It is very nice to see Tennessee winning again! I am very thankful to this entire staff and team. What CJH and staff have accomplished in 4 years is remarkable. 30 wins in 3 years!!! We are in the playoffs and you have to be in it to win it. This team is playing well enough to beat anyone, especially at a neutral site. Not saying we win it all but we definitely have a chance. Regardless of how we do in the playoffs I am truly grateful and enjoying the ride.

After years of mediocrity it is awesome to see Tennessee in the top 10 and in the playoffs.

Go VOLS!!

That's where a home game would be a huge boost. Any environment we go into our O Line has shown they will move early but a raucous crowd we will kill at least 2 drives a game from getting behind the sticks from presnap penalties.

Who wanted to fire "everyone"? That said, I don't think they "overachieved". Nico wasn't great and at times wasn't even very good. Nowhere near the Hooker level the Vols needed to overachieve. The D performed pretty much in alignment with their level of talent and depth in the front 7. Really good for the most part. The secondary overachieved according to expectations but probably not according to talent. There are some really talented guys in UT's secondary. The run game overachieved.

Kind of a mixed bag. Heupel considers it a step in program growth. IMHO, he's right. They have not arrived.

Tis the season..

I think Grumors are good for Freaks business. The hits on the site explode. Lol

That's a baseline based on someone else's perspective. In real life things are fluid.

Vegas had aTm under 8.5 (at -120) wins and last night they were playing for a spot in the SEC CG. Did the over or underachieve in your opinion?

Unlikely to see SEC officials at least in the 1st game. Not sure if it is intentional bias or something subconscious but I don't believe that penalty on #19 gets called on any other SEC team. I am certain that the Vols routinely get called for holds that are standard fare for UGA.
