Overrated Bands

I love Floyd, I know others don't but their arrangements are just sort of genius IMO. The vocals are probably the weakest link but as far as pure musicianship and arrangement go there are a whole heck of a lot better out there.

as evidenced by Shine On You Crazy Diamond

You can both kiss my lily, white....a.... album!

:moon2:

Just because I am a female doesn't mean that I don't have good taste in music and just because I happen to like Journey doesn't make me irrational, k?!

Haha, sorry I should have included something to let you know that my comment was in jest, I just can't actually bring myself to use a smilie in one of my posts.

My original reaction was more a general pattern I notice among female friend's who are both rational and (usually) have decent musical tastes, but put them in a bar and play the first 10 seconds of Don't Stop Believin' and look out. It's as if someone blew a whistle that only females can hear, they all start to scream/squeal to some degree.

P.S. I've gotten past it before, no need to write me off compeltely!

This is what disturbs me. Music is relative to the person. There is no such thing as bad taste in music. You like what you like. Somebody else may disagree but they are no more right than you are.

By the way, I dig a little journey on occasion

Have to agree with Nirvana. I loved them when I was 17 coming out of high school. I bought the hype, believing that they had changed music. Immensely enjoyed Nevermind. Truth is though, after Nevermind they were going downhill. Their last album before Kurt died was just dung. Alice in Chains was much better.

U2 was awesome from 80 to 90. They started going to the dogs with Achtung Baby, even though I still enjoy that album from time to time. They've been living off the name they built up with Joshua Tree and War for the last 20 years, and are sadly nothing more than a pathetic, over the hill, pop band.

Dare I say it. Nine Inch Nails. While I enjoy a few of their songs, they were terrible for having one good song on an album and filling the rest of it with utter crap.

Dave Matthews band. I think this is the band for middle-aged, wannabe hippies and yuppies.

Let me add, Grateful Dead and Phish. I guess you have to be there, and be stoned out of your mind to like these guys.

311. Every song sounds the same, the same. We just make new words up, up. People continue to buy our crap, crap.

Sorry guys, never been a fan of the Beatles music, and I don't understand what all the fuss is aboot.

Agreed. Never liked the freakin Beatles. A few good songs, but overall VERY overrated. And they're communists - I never really cared for that.

personally, i like nirvana but i do think they are overrated. cobain was a marginal guitar player, a marginal lyracist, and a marginal singer at best. they came out at a time when music had hit an all time low imo. him committing suicide sort of immortalized him and the band. their music was on a steady decline ever since nevermind (which is a classic) came out.

i will say that nirvana opened my mind to a much broader variety of music, but they had waaay more mediocre songs than good songs.
Marginal singer!?? Yeah okay buddy. Each his own I guess. You obviously dont feel it the same way I feel it.

You always have your Steven Tyler/Axl Rose/Rod Stewart. That almost made me puke.

It dont bother me at all when someone says Nirvana sucks, or is overrated. I dont blame a soul for feeling that way. After the shotgun blast, things have changed and alot of fans and stuff came along with that.

But for being a kid growing up, there was nothing as real and as dangerous going on at that point in rock and roll. When you are growing up in a small town, dissillusioned with rock, and listening to Elvis and Buddy Holly..wondering if any band can ever be as good as the Clash..then a band like Nirvana comes along. It was special.

Everything gets played out and myths get made. But in the end, Nirvana's "Unplugged" stands up to anything that any band has ever made. As a live, one take, music performance. That is with the warts and all.

Oh well, I have let my emotions take over now!

In a high school of 2,000 people in 1993 in Maury County Tennessee, there were exactly 3 Nirvana fans. 3!

And we could not have been happier about that.

Only wish they would have never gotten so big.

But yeah, sure, they are overrated now. They have to much legend on them. I guess folks forget how much music sucked at that point before it all went DOWN in 1991. I mean, IT WENT DOWN. We got rid of Poison and Xtreme with four chords on the radio.

Wish these kids today had something with half as much soul.

you are right, to each his own. i have several bootleg nirvana shows and KC's singing on over half is horrible.
i do agree that their unplugged performance is top notch tho.

not real sure where you were going with that second statement there...

Beatles, IMO.

Ban? Just kidding. Anyways, The Beatles have been my favorite band since I was 8 (I'm 30 now) and remember hearing "Drive My Car" while riding in the car with my dad. My parents had some Beatles on vinyl and I used to love playing the records. To this day I swear that vinyl is still the best way to listen to an album.

The Beatles receive a tone of praise and deservedly so, in my opinion. I cannot imagine how music would have progressed without them and Dylan.

As far as who I thnk is overrated...I will say Sting/The Police. I remember seeing some poll where The Police were named a top 10 band of all-time. They were up there with The Beatles, Led Zep and ahead of The Doors and Pink Floyd. They have some good songs, but are no where near that level IMO.
