Overrated Bands

yep, and all 3 had that.

The question was in regards to Coldplay and the Beatles, not the Beatles to MJ and Elvis. So to say that that you cant compare Coldplay to the Beatles because they are not as successful is pointless because no band has been as successful since the Beatles. That is was I was trying to get at. It's so obvious that its not even worth mentioning.

MJ wasn't successful? That was your question, "Who has been as sucessful as the Beatles" I dont compare Coldplay to the Beatles because the music styles sound nothing alike IMO

If you're going to judge the eagles today, that may be one thing... judging them in the mid-late 70's, no way they were overrated.... after all, they've been going at it for around 40 years....

in my mind, you would judge a band at the height of their power... jmo

The Eagles

They are good but not great IMHO. The prices they charged for tickets for a couple of their tours is evidence of them being overrated.

I don't dislike them but I agree they are overrated, I would have loved their music had it been less polished and a little more raw.

Then by those standards you rate any number of boy bands and the spice girls as heavyweights because they sold a lot of records and shows.

I know it is an absurd comparison but I was trying to make the point that it is much better to step back and let things shake out for a decade or two before you rank bands and groups.

you prolly couldn't say they were the beatles of the 70's .. nobody could match the mania of the 60's... but they were huge back then ...

you make a good point ... the perspective after a few years helps ...

MJ wasn't successful?

I never said he wasn't successful, I said no BAND has been AS successful as the Beatles since. His career died 20 years before he did.

That was your question, "Who has been as sucessful as the Beatles"

It was a rhetorical question.

But you did exactly that.

Comparing those two is blasphemy. Success isn't the same, lyrically isn't the same, etc. They dont sound anything alike

not really man. I said comparing the two would be blasphemy.

MJ's career died? Thats funny I thought he had just sold out 50 shows in London before he died.

Either way, doesn't matter. Its personal opinion.

This thread honestly doesn't have much point. It is all personal taste. I hate Nickleback but ya know what, there is ppl all around the world who love them. I hate Pearl Jam and I know that is pretty unpopular. I like many of the bands people have listed on here. To each his own. Grateful dead had a cult following. Most of the people who dislike them dislike them because they are a "jam band" or hippies like them. Im not a hippie by anymeans just enjoy great guitar players and the Dead defiently had that. Like I said earlier, to each his own.

like someone said before, music is really relative to the person listening to it. i probably should have added "in your own opinion" to the title

It was a comeback tour because he was broke. What had he done the previous 20 years since Dangerous? He released one forgettable album and toured to promote it, that's it. Other than that he didn't tour at all. He could have toured the world and sang Billy Jean over and over and people would have gone ape**** and he would have sold out everywhere, but he didn't. He chose to do nothing therefore he had no career. He chose to sit on his ass and spend all of his money. It's easy to do when you have no career.

Nickelback sucks hard, that's why they're overrated. Anybody that says the Beatles suck is dumb as fu.

As stated earlier, it's all about personal taste, and the Beatles and Stones are two of the biggest bands who do not appeal to me at all.

Like I said, I think there is a difference between not liking something and thinking it's overrated. That's just the way I look at it.

Suggesting The Beatles and The Rolling Stones weren't/aren't great bands is akin to suggesting Albert Pujols is an average hitter and Percy Harvin is slower than Visanthe Shiancoe.

Regarding the OPs question:

ACDC
Nickelback
Green Day
Pearl Jam
Nirvana
The Red Hot Chili Peppers

I agree, I really shouldn't say the Stones are overrated. I'm just not a big fan, which goes against what I was saying earlier. I agree with all your overrated bands save RHCP.

How is AC/DC overrated?

Sure their music is simple and based on a formula but overrated?

Pearl Jam is one of the best bands of all-time, hands down.

AC/DC is one of the top 5 or 10 rock bands of all-time. Their back catalogue is second to the Beatles in all-time sales. Overrated? I think not.
