Taking my Vol fandom out of the equation for a second. I dunno much, but I know this…the other UT completely destroyed the big 12. That place is a poop show. Don’t see either coach going there. Money isn’t everything.
They will play nice for a few years in the SEC.
But I got my popcorn ready. They eventually will challenge the other schools.
I just hope that our UT as well as the other conference stalwarts stand their ground. If Junior doesn’t want to play straight, invite them to walk.
But the reality was Texas was going somewhere. Big Ten or SEC and the SEC couldn't afford to let them go off to the Big Ten with Oklahoma.
Maybe in the past, but with the media deals and meteoric rise of college baseball, I'm not so sure it won't be very profitable for more schools. Just last year was 40% higher viewership than the previous year, and data so far up to super regionals this year is already 20% more than last year. I also think MLB teams are looking at college to scale down their farm systems, and I don't remember so many college players drafted over high schoolers every year. I didn't look too far back to verify this completely, but just trends the last 2-3 years college players are dominating the draft, but I'm not sure if it is related to covid at all or more players are going to college rather than minors. I just feel like, with rule changes to compensation, players have a choice now to go to college AND make money, not or.It will help, but we are still likely to never break even on baseball here. Only 3-4 schools do. But DW and the athletic department know that a winning baseball program does more than just being in revenue. Winning and being on TV has a lot of value outside of just dollars brought in, which is why they are going to be extremely willing to pour in money to the sport.
Besides, if football keeps trending in the direction it is, the revenue generated from that will more than pay for the pennies on the dollar operating expenses of the baseball program.

If they want to make rights money then the sport will die quickly. I think college baseball being full access for $10 a month with ESPN+ vs MLB having one game a week on espn Sunday night and having the subscribe somewhere for the rest is a big reason for college baseball’s explosion in popularity. We can hope. But in another thread, you may or may not have seen the 2023 revenues/expenses breakdown for 2023 at UT. Media rights only brought in $19,000. There just isn’t going to be a drastic enough change any time soon to get the number up enough to make money. It would have to come on standard operating expenses like ticket sales, which just won’t happen for a little while. It’s not impossible to break even, but it’s hard.
That is exactly the mentality that must be avoided.
The SEC will survive just fine with or without Texas. If they start with the shat, let them decide if they want to travel up to the Canadian border when it is cold from late September and into April-May to play
I know D1 is a paid site, but does anyone have access and care to share the portions that mention Vitello?
I have no doubt the Longhorns will try to lure Tony into taking the job in Austin if Schlossnagle is a no-go. However, sources close to the situation in Knoxville insist that they are close to securing a new, updated contract for the ultra-successful Volunteers skipper. It’s not to say I ‘should’ know everything, but if there’s movement on the Vitello front with Texas, it’s something I simply have not heard about. Vitello is an outstanding coach, and he is essentially getting a brand-new ballpark. He’s an absolute rockstar in East Tennessee. The Texas job is elite as elite gets, but it would surprise me if he’s willing to give up what he has built in Knoxville. The Vols are on an incredible run.
