No matter if you fire Pearl or keep him, you are taking a risk. You can believe we can get someone else or believe he's one of the top 10 coaches in CBB. I am with the former, but if you have only watched UT basketball since the late 80's, I can see why you are scared for Pearl to be gone.
We also need to stop pointing fingers at other programs. Every situation is different. To be honest, we really don't have a situation to compare to other than Dez Bryant in which a minor thing (Dez seeing Deion, BBQgate) became a big thing because they lied for whatever reason. This isn't Cam, this isn't Calipari, this isn't anything else. The best thing for UT's fanbase to do is focus on what Pearl did and not compare it to others.
Bruce Pearl is not bigger than the program. He never will be unless we get 3 NC's and 8-9 Final Four's. I think it's sad we have Vol fans that ignore the history of Mears, King, DeVoe, Ellis, etc. However, that happens. While I disagree with NYYvol on some things, he's dead right about this: The program will be better off when people stop worshipping Pearl. We need to get behind THE PLAYERS, who have nothing to do with this, and got screwed because their head coach's dumb decision.
If nothing else happens to UT other than probation and a loss scholly or two, keeping Bruce Pearl would be the best thing for UT to do. You don't get rid of a coach like Pearl if that is all that happens. If other things happen (tourney bans, suspensions for Pearl) it's time to move on and take a risk. We can't be scared of what the future holds. If we have to move on, we have to move on. Hat's right in this aspect: Doug Dickey isn't making the hires anymore. And Unimane is right: UT has never been this big on a national landscape, at least since the Ernie & Bernie Era. Whatever happens with Bruce Pearl, the UT fanbase can't be scared of what might happen. If he have to hire someone else, UT basketball will not end. And the new coach will need our support as much as Bruce Pearl needs our support if he stays.
