Pearl Ripped...

No matter if you fire Pearl or keep him, you are taking a risk. You can believe we can get someone else or believe he's one of the top 10 coaches in CBB. I am with the former, but if you have only watched UT basketball since the late 80's, I can see why you are scared for Pearl to be gone.

We also need to stop pointing fingers at other programs. Every situation is different. To be honest, we really don't have a situation to compare to other than Dez Bryant in which a minor thing (Dez seeing Deion, BBQgate) became a big thing because they lied for whatever reason. This isn't Cam, this isn't Calipari, this isn't anything else. The best thing for UT's fanbase to do is focus on what Pearl did and not compare it to others.

Bruce Pearl is not bigger than the program. He never will be unless we get 3 NC's and 8-9 Final Four's. I think it's sad we have Vol fans that ignore the history of Mears, King, DeVoe, Ellis, etc. However, that happens. While I disagree with NYYvol on some things, he's dead right about this: The program will be better off when people stop worshipping Pearl. We need to get behind THE PLAYERS, who have nothing to do with this, and got screwed because their head coach's dumb decision.

If nothing else happens to UT other than probation and a loss scholly or two, keeping Bruce Pearl would be the best thing for UT to do. You don't get rid of a coach like Pearl if that is all that happens. If other things happen (tourney bans, suspensions for Pearl) it's time to move on and take a risk. We can't be scared of what the future holds. If we have to move on, we have to move on. Hat's right in this aspect: Doug Dickey isn't making the hires anymore. And Unimane is right: UT has never been this big on a national landscape, at least since the Ernie & Bernie Era. Whatever happens with Bruce Pearl, the UT fanbase can't be scared of what might happen. If he have to hire someone else, UT basketball will not end. And the new coach will need our support as much as Bruce Pearl needs our support if he stays.

I could care less what people on TV, other team's fans or even what some of our own fan's think about our coach.

If he cheated I may feel different but i think he didnt follow the exact letter or the rules but very different than cheating.

I could care less that he lied to an organization that I have no respect for.

If the NCAA hammers us bad enough that we need to fire him then we should fire him.

If our basketball team starts to lose basketball games and not making the tournament then we should fire.

Until then I stand 100% behind our coach and will cheer full throttle for my Vols!!

GO VOLS!!!

Can't pick and choose who you can be honest to and what laws to break.

You can, but it's stupid. Nobody has to respect the AA or care that we lied to them, but can't piss and moan as they hammer us for said lie when we damn well know that they will, every time.

Pearl didn't have the luxury of being dishonest to anyone. I see your point, though.

Every single person alive today has been dishonest and broken a law or rule during their lifetime.

I guess we will have to go without a coach.

WTF does that have to do with being caught lying to your governing body? Lying professionally several layers up is stupid and no, not everyone does it. In fact, I suspect few do and all of those caught get the professional hammer.

I really dont care that he lied to them....he is paying the penalty for his sins----if the NCAA hammers UT to the point that we have to fire him then by all means fire him but until them I support him and this team.

I don't disagree, but it is perfect media fodder and his past combined with his recent persona make it juicier. Again, we don't have to care or agree, but it can, ad likely will, heavily impact our program.

I'm married. Does that mean I get some free passes on lying and rule breaking? (Please say yes) :)

Aren't all cheaters and liars the same? I don't agree with what BP did and wouldn't have blamed UT for firing him earlier or after the NCAA swings the hammer BUT the institutional and SEC penalties are stiff already. I hope the NCAA doesn't hit too hard and that he survives with no future gimmies. Has anyone ever seen the school impose such harsh penalties without an NCAA mandate?

It is amusing to see all the "Pearl must be fired" posts that never change. All the brilliant and snappy posts by the haters never have a new or original thought. Just the same old Pearl is scum, he cheated, and lied therefore he must go. My favorite though is the one about how UT is now a better job so finding a good coach shouldn't be hard to do. If you believe that take a look at Arkansas, they fired a successful coach, heck he had won a national championship. The Hog fans were saying the exact same things I've read from UT fans, no problem, we're a great job now. Well, the Hogs haven't done much since Nolen was fired, they couldn't even get that lush Billy Clyde to coach for them and are now suffering with that stupid looking red headed pecker wood from KY.

The best one I've read on this thread though is the hypocrite that wants Pearl fired because he cheated and lied and in the next breath brags about watching Duke and coach K for 22 years. IIRC K and Duke are still under investigation for cheating, of course the fair and balanced NCAA hasn't come up with a penalty for them in many years now and probably never will. Then there's Bill Self and the Darrell Aurthur grade changing investigation. Of course Self was totally honest when he denied knowing anything about it. The fair and balanced NCAA really hammered Kansas over that one. Let's not forget Cal and how he ran off and hid in China so he wouldn't have to go before the infraction committee with Memphis after he got them popped over someone taking Rose's test for him.

Don't worry, if the NCAA drops the hammer on Pearl you won't hear me crying about it, but don't get mad when I laugh about Pearl getting off with time served and the football team getting busted for all the crap they've pulled. Yoa, now that got your attention didn't it?

Gibberish.

People that lie to them make it very easy to be their scapegoat.

See: Dez Bryant.

Good point. But BP did come clean on his own. The only reason to consider keeping him. "yea without sin cast the first stone" sort of thing.

He only came clean because he was caught. That's not the same as telling the truth the first time. BP does that, the secondary violations committed are a mere footnote.

Lying has a whole different set of standards, ones that are inexcusable. He's getting everything he deserves and after the NCAA is done with him, you will just about be able to stick a fork in him and our program.

See above post. He says he would fire him because it is hurting the program. What he doesn't understand is at Duke you can fire the coach and keep on rolling. At UT it is highly doubtful they will get it right. It could hurt UT BB more to fire Pearl? Most fans are still behind him. Unless they continue to struggle.

I would almost argue that. Look at bcg and matt doherty

You can coaches at two if the top 3 programs in the country and the pressure for perfection on the next guy is unbelievable. BCG would have been given a 5-7 year pass at UT.

The program won't take the brunt of it. Bruce will.
