Pearl to Iowa??

Since when can someone in Knoxville not live on $2M per year?

Good thought. I don't think that many people realize the cost-of-living discrepancy between East Tennessee and places like Southern California or New England.

$2 Mil is a lot around here, and his beautiful house in Gettysvue is evidence of that. In truth, he probably doesn't even feel his payments...including alimony.

Can we just see how the tournament advancement plays out before we annoint Bruce one of the best in the country?

Im not basing it on just this year. Im basing it on body of work at Tennessee and otherwise. Last i checked BP is shooting 100% on the year, his job is coaching the team he has and he does a fine job.

If Pearl is waiting for a job, it's the Boston College job

Hey fellas,

I'm from Iowa and just wanted to hop on here to see what rumors you guys have been hearing. Obviously it looks like Lickliter is gonna be done, and a few people have mentioned Pearl, I don't see that happening. A couple people have heard some things about Steve Forbes, however, which would make sense also, being from Iowa himself. He looks to be a great recruiter and people person and think he would be a great fit at Iowa. Anybody hear anything about maybe Forbes leaving for Iowa?

Thanks!

I like Bruce, but you're going to have to tell me where I can also check on his 100% shooting.

Way too early for that talk but Forbes would be a great hire for Iowa. I'm guessing most on here know he grew up about 20 miles from Iowa City.

Actually, the more I think about it, the positive of that Memphis fiasco last year was that Pearl pretty much priced himself out of the market to do that often unless the elite of the elites come calling.

Something tells me Iowa isn't going to spend $3 million on a bball coach.

Hiring Steve Forbes as your head basketball coach would be proof positive that you no longer consider hoops a priority.

Wade Houston spent a portion if his childhood 15 minutes from Knoxville. That sure turned out great.

Thankfully you're not on the search committee.
Yeah, Iowa would be lucky to hire an obese, charisma free slob who isn't even the best of Tennessee's three nothing happening assistants. That's a recipe for success.

It's stupid to completely dismiss the Pearl to Iowa rumors. Just because he turned down the job a few years ago doesn't mean he would turn them down again. Here are the reasons why this could happen:

1. The Iowa basketball job is a better job than the Tennessee job. Iowa has at least some tradition in comparison to Tennessee. The Tennessee job was treading water (to be nice) before Pearl came. NCAA Tournament victories aren't even close between the two schools. When good coaches have coached at Iowa, they have won (Lute Olsen, Tom Davis, and even Alford to some extent). Don't get confused by recent success versus real success.

2. The Iowa AD is desperate. Gary Barta can't afford to hire another mid-major coach. He'll go for the big fish because Iowa fans have spoken with their attendance and Barta knows it will take someone of Pearl's magnitude to bring fans back to seats in the arena. They have to have someone they can sell from a PR standpoint that will help them avoid the nuclear winter type setting that was evident at their games this year. Barta will hand Pearl a blank check and make him say "no" at least 3 times before he gives up and moves on to Stallings or someone else. And with Big Ten Network revenue and boosters willing to pay buyouts, there's money to be thrown around. If Notre Dame can buy out Charlie Weis, Iowa can afford to buy out Lickliter and pay Pearl. Iowa's athletic department is 15th in revenue nationally, ahead of ND.

3. Pearl's style works in the SEC, but it isn't unique there. In the Big 10 (where the 1st team to 60 every night wins), Pearl could rule the conference because no one else is equipped to play that style night in and night out. Iowa has to find a niche system (like Pearl's) because it can't run the same slow systems that Ohio State and Wisconsin play and compete. Those teams get better players, so they have to have something unique to sell kids. Pearl brings that. And I'm sure Barta will tell Pearl more than once that his style can revolutionize Big Ten play.

4. Pearl's staff is chock full of guys with Iowa connections, having either coached, played, or grew up there. Not something to be underestimated.

I'm not saying it's going to happen. But to say it absolutely won't is a little ridiculous.

How many Big Ten titles did Tom Davis win at Iowa? His "success" at Iowa is a myth.

Orlando Antigua and Rod Strickland grew up in New York. I guess UK should fear St. John's is about to hire Cal.

Right, sorry. He won no Big Ten titles, but did make the NCAAs 9 out of 13 years and won 269 games there. Pretty terrible.

He had more NCAA tourney wins at Iowa than Tennessee has in the history of its men's basketball program.

I'm guessing more than a few UT fans would take that kind of mythical success.

Again, why would he leave Knoxville with a top 10 recruiting class already signed and the possibility of it getting even better?

I don't know. Ask Calipari.

Again, a blank check with his name on it and a chance to be in a conference where he could rule it. And that isn't happening in the SEC as long as Calipari is at UK.
