It's stupid to completely dismiss the Pearl to Iowa rumors. Just because he turned down the job a few years ago doesn't mean he would turn them down again. Here are the reasons why this could happen:
1. The Iowa basketball job is a better job than the Tennessee job. Iowa has at least some tradition in comparison to Tennessee. The Tennessee job was treading water (to be nice) before Pearl came. NCAA Tournament victories aren't even close between the two schools. When good coaches have coached at Iowa, they have won (Lute Olsen, Tom Davis, and even Alford to some extent). Don't get confused by recent success versus real success.
2. The Iowa AD is desperate. Gary Barta can't afford to hire another mid-major coach. He'll go for the big fish because Iowa fans have spoken with their attendance and Barta knows it will take someone of Pearl's magnitude to bring fans back to seats in the arena. They have to have someone they can sell from a PR standpoint that will help them avoid the nuclear winter type setting that was evident at their games this year. Barta will hand Pearl a blank check and make him say "no" at least 3 times before he gives up and moves on to Stallings or someone else. And with Big Ten Network revenue and boosters willing to pay buyouts, there's money to be thrown around. If Notre Dame can buy out Charlie Weis, Iowa can afford to buy out Lickliter and pay Pearl. Iowa's athletic department is 15th in revenue nationally, ahead of ND.
3. Pearl's style works in the SEC, but it isn't unique there. In the Big 10 (where the 1st team to 60 every night wins), Pearl could rule the conference because no one else is equipped to play that style night in and night out. Iowa has to find a niche system (like Pearl's) because it can't run the same slow systems that Ohio State and Wisconsin play and compete. Those teams get better players, so they have to have something unique to sell kids. Pearl brings that. And I'm sure Barta will tell Pearl more than once that his style can revolutionize Big Ten play.
4. Pearl's staff is chock full of guys with Iowa connections, having either coached, played, or grew up there. Not something to be underestimated.
I'm not saying it's going to happen. But to say it absolutely won't is a little ridiculous.
I don't know. Ask Calipari.
Again, a blank check with his name on it and a chance to be in a conference where he could rule it. And that isn't happening in the SEC as long as Calipari is at UK.
Jerry Green and Bruce Pearl have been the coaches at UT for a combined nine seasons. How many times has UT missed the NCAA tournament in those years? Even if you add in Peterson, Tennessee has matched the 9 of 13 you are trying to pass off as impressive.Right, sorry. He won no Big Ten titles, but did make the NCAAs 9 out of 13 years and won 269 games there. Pretty terrible.
He had more NCAA tourney wins at Iowa than Tennessee has in the history of its men's basketball program.
I'm guessing more than a few UT fans would take that kind of mythical success.

If everyone is putting their faith in Hamilton to not screw this up, then you should know better than that. Introducing...Derek Dooley! Please.
Iowa is a rebuilding job now. Wasn't UT a rebuilding job when Pearl got there? And it's all about style and matchups, as I said before. Pearl's style of play could and probably would make the Big Ten completely reevaluate their put-me-to-sleep style of play.
As far as facilities, it's a wash really. Iowa's got a brand new practice facility. Same with money. You're going to throw out fan support? How was that before Pearl when Buzz Peterson was rolling out .500 teams??
And yes, there is more corn in Iowa. Very smart and thoughtful reply.
You do know Bruce has gone away from pressing and his "style" of play, right? If goes back will remain to be seen.
I'm sure Tom Izzo, Bo Ryan, Painter, Crean, Weber, Tubby and Matta are totally going to change what they do because of Bruce.
So if the practice facilities are a wash, we have a better arena and they can't offer him more money it sounds like a great idea...
UT was a rebuilding job and at this point Pearl would have to take a step back to go to Iowa. This isn't UT to USC for example.
What is Iowa's average attendance the past five years compared to UT's?
Dude, have you watched Big Ten basketball? Like I said, first one to 60 points wins. Those coaches wouldn't have a choice but to change something.
And Iowa could offer Bruce whatever amount of money he wanted. They are doing just fine with revenue.
To talk about attendance is ridiculous. UT has Pearl who sells tickets. Iowa has a bunch of thick-ankled white dudes coached by a scrub that Iowa was bidding against itself for when they hired him. Of course, UT is going to have better attendance. It's a better product at this point. That makes my point. Gary Barta is desperate to put butts in the seats. He needs someone who can do that. I don't know if it will be Pearl or not, but you can absolutely bet that he will be Barta's 1st, 2nd, and 3rd choice.

How much did Tom Davis make Bob Knight and Gene Keady change what they did?Dude, have you watched Big Ten basketball? Like I said, first one to 60 points wins. Those coaches wouldn't have a choice but to change something.

Or Bruce would have to change. There are better teams and coaches in the Big Ten than the SEC at this point. There is no guarantee Pearl's style would cause Tom Izzo to change. That's absurd. Thad Matta beat Pearl a couple of times and Painter beat him as well.
Iowa could not offer Bruce more money than UT. We could match any offer but if you are dumb enough to pay 3 Mil we could find a better coach for that price.
And it's amazing how fans turnout when the team is winning versus losing. And if both teams sold out all games our attendance would still be higher because of TBA... Still waiting on those numbers.
Who?
Homes and land may down in market value but coaches and athletes are sky high right now. I'm not much of a gambler. I don't want to let Pearl walk for someone else who might not pan out. Pearl has done a lot of damage in the SEC. Good enough for me.
Pearl has been coaching against Cal yearly for five seasons now. How many times has he gone deeper into the NCAA Tournament? The amount of blind faith you people have in Pearl is North Korean in its delusion. You and your ilk continue to act as if wins in January and February are the barometer of success. It's the same mentality the orange overall crowd had about "10 win seasons" that kept Fulmer antiquated ass employed three seasons past any usefulness.Oh yea boy, it's so clear after this year that Cal is going to have Pearls number forever. k:
