Pelosi visit to Taiwan

There was never going to be a war over this. They were never going to shoot down a plane with her on it.

They are more measured than that.
Heck, this sounds like something WE would be more likely to do. But it would be on accident.

Send Nancy to Tawain to distract from her husbands court date tomorrow. DUI, drugs and injuries, not to mention the judge was replaced at the last minute.

I give the Taiwanese a 0% chance..Just too close to mainland while support is an ocean away. Tiny island against 1.3B, no close proximity any allies, even with American full scale support is the biggest military loser I have ever seen.

Maybe, but most people wouldn't have given Ukraine much of a chance either, and Russia wasn't faced with 90 miles of open sea to get to Ukraine. Look at the attached article, and remember the Japanese dug in and and fought battles costly to us on numerous cut off Pacific islands. Okinawa is under 400 miles from Taiwan; Kadena AFB has two permanent fighter squadrons, and may still have an F-35 squadron temporarily there. Kadena has tankers and long runways - B-52s flew out of Kadena to bomb Vietnam. We also have a lot of strength on Guam and according to articles have been working some out of other Pacific islands. Taiwan has other allies in the region - countries who feel threatened by China. Japan has been discussing amending their military forces from just defensive. There are two Japanese F-15 squadrons at Naha at the southern tip of Okinawa, and I've read others have been rotating in and out of Japanese islands between Taiwan and Okinawa. Yonaguni at the end of the Ryukyu (Okinawa) chain is only 70 miles from Taiwan. The Chinese have been antagonizing Japan by sailing and flying through passages between islands and threatening Australian planes while complaining about others sailing close to their manmade islands.

Both Guam and Okinawa have large logistic depots and ammunition storage facilities. Chibana near Kadena AFB is huge - a tremendous number of hardened bunkers.

The best thing we could do right now is form a strong Pacific alliance similar to NATO with countries from New Zealand to S Korea to let the Chinese know that by attacking Taiwan they are facing a much larger battle.

Well, you know some of the guys here lose all their inhibitions if you flash a $5 in front of them. Flash $50M and you can probably hook just about everybody.
Where do I sign up?

And as far as the government goes, taxation, it should be considered a charity.

This is a big problem for a Chinese invasion.
It would be a big problem for any invasion. DDay only had to cross 20 miles of water. And in most of the Pacific fighting we were either completely unopposed on the sea or/and in the air when it came to the actual invasion, or had a stupid high odds in those departments. As well as fighting hugely numerical inferior enemies, fighting far away from their homeland and resupply.

Throw in drones and missiles and the odds favor the defender even more.

To put it in perspective to have a similar strength ratio as DDay the PRC would need at least 750,000 men involved in their landing force alone.

My above post assumes that the RoC isnt able to mobilize their reserves. 165k active, 1.65m reserve.

And that 750k would be more than a third of the PRC's total military force.

We shouldn't have to defend it, that falls to the regions powers like Japan, South Korea and the Aussies.

I agree fully but I am asking an honest question: you think the aussies get involved? I understand Japan would probably love to get involved but in the grand scheme of things I don’t see how we do not get sucked in.

Dumb question, but what's the defense against anti-ship missiles?
CWIS. Basically computerized/automated Gatlin guns.

I know lazers have been talked about but no idea if they are effective.

Maybe other missiles or sacrificial drones. Tanks have reactive armor, and some other countermeasures that go off automatically when they sense an incoming threat and have another blast try to blow up the threat.
