Pelosi visit to Taiwan

Not disagreeing it would be a bloody mess. Rommel was defending a whole coastline with an already overstretched German force and savage Russian campaign at same time.

Look at tiny Taiwan

Very heavily defensive and with 23 million "defenders", there is no strategic dispersion and no where to strategically disperse other than guerrilla warfare. I actually did a gas project for Stingers with Redstone Arsenal back in the 90's for portable AD missiles so they could stage counter missions in the mountains. No big deal but caught my interest. And I tell you what..Hunstville AL was full of Chinese importer/exporters at the time including industrial legal espionage.

It does make me contemplate if the island hopping campaign was the correct call in WW2..Could we have not gone at the throat and let all those islands wither on the vine?
I dont think we needed ALL of the islands we took. But I think retaking our islands and a couple others was needed for staging/cutting supply lines. Like Iwo Jima for our bombers. But yeah once we took out their navy they were boned.

You could make this argument for any diplomatic move.
No, not when there’s a legitimate reason to make a move. Pelosi claimed this was to show the world that the US stands with Taiwan and supports their freedom. If anything, all it did was make it more likely China tries to take that freedom away.

Why though? Why does it move China closer to an attack? We have always maintained a position friendly towards the RoC.

Try?
That's ALWAYS been their intent once they felt they achieved the economic leverage and military might to do so.

It's VERY simple what's going on. The strategic ambiguity if maintained forever means that the US never had to defend Taiwan....which means China never invaded.

So we keep with the policy unitl China EXPECTEDLY breaks the status quo.

There is no "poking the panda ". It's literally been pulling on the chain until it strong enough to break it. In other words they were always going to attack.

And they'll lose...

Yeah, but this just means that we need to triple our efforts and resolve to combat climate change.

I've always thought China is our real environmental scam. We can cut back on industrial emissions here and hide it over there; and CEOs all around the globe sell cheap crap and pocket the profit. The "government" leaders on both sides of the aisle either don't care, aren't competent enough to see what's in front of them, or are knowingly selling us down the river while they line their own pockets at our expense.

What did her going accomplish? Heightened tensions with China?

Two real possibilities come to mind. Taiwan has military goods on order, but the delivery is backed up. Perhaps congress needs to know and get involved in setting some priorities. The second is Taiwan is a supplier of products - especially electronics - that affect our strategic "health". Congress had a hand in selling us down the road with globalism rather than making sure we have the means to survive on our own; could be congress needs to have their tail jerked ... or better, kicked up around their ears since they rarely listen to most of the US.

Of course, it could be just another congressional junket and a chance for Pelosi to swill vodka while looking important, to miss hubby's court date because of national security, or to try to make the dims look better for the mid terms.

Or Pelosi wants to give China an opportunity to take Taiwan.

'The woman brings chaos': Donald Trump Slams Nancy Pelosi for visiting Taiwan, saying she 'played into the hands' of China that can now do whatever it wants

Former President Donald Trump slammed House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's trip to Taiwan, saying Saturday she had played into China's hands, allowing it make even more aggressive moves on the autonomous island.

China launched live fire military exercises after Pelosi visited Taiwan in a show of support.

'What was she doing? And everything she touches turns to .... ' he told an audience of conservatives in Dallas, Texas, who filled in the gap with an expletive.

'She fails. The women brings chaos,' he said adding that she had given China the cover it needed to flex their muscles.

'She played right into their hands, because now they have an excuse to do whatever they're doing,' he said.

'And I will tell you it would have never ever happened in a million years under Trump, I can tell you.'

On this climate change thing, the thing that I never see mentioned very much is the contribution of Urban Heat Islands. By some estimates they are contributing to as much as 50% of the heat index change. Yet, you see very little being said or solutions being brought forward.

And Pelosi contributed to the climate issue by flying there, when apparently she could have just dug a hole this whole time.

There's a lot to that. One is the direct effect - the heat and localized polluting generated. I've always wondered if Mother Nature can handle distributed pollution and heat better than concentrated heat and pollution - looking at southern CA, my guess is, yes, that concentrated overpopulation is a huge problem ... and one that's ignored. The other is one of do we really know what climate scientists claim they know because of monitoring bias. Temperature monitors that were originally located in more remote locations are being overtaken by population growth and included in or too near heat islands. They always seem to pick arguments based on what's more alarming (and produces funding) while neglecting a lot of other data that might say any plans they might put in place will largely be ineffective. But ignoring Chinese pollution while further regulating the US is nuts.
