I dont think we needed ALL of the islands we took. But I think retaking our islands and a couple others was needed for staging/cutting supply lines. Like Iwo Jima for our bombers. But yeah once we took out their navy they were boned. Not disagreeing it would be a bloody mess. Rommel was defending a whole coastline with an already overstretched German force and savage Russian campaign at same time.
Look at tiny Taiwan

Very heavily defensive and with 23 million "defenders", there is no strategic dispersion and no where to strategically disperse other than guerrilla warfare. I actually did a gas project for Stingers with Redstone Arsenal back in the 90's for portable AD missiles so they could stage counter missions in the mountains. No big deal but caught my interest. And I tell you what..Hunstville AL was full of Chinese importer/exporters at the time including industrial legal espionage.
It does make me contemplate if the island hopping campaign was the correct call in WW2..Could we have not gone at the throat and let all those islands wither on the vine?
Why though? Why does it move China closer to an attack? We have always maintained a position friendly towards the RoC.No, not when there’s a legitimate reason to make a move. Pelosi claimed this was to show the world that the US stands with Taiwan and supports their freedom. If anything, all it did was make it more likely China tries to take that freedom away.

Yeah, but this just means that we need to triple our efforts and resolve to combat climate change.
What did her going accomplish? Heightened tensions with China?
I've always thought China is our real environmental scam. We can cut back on industrial emissions here and hide it over there; and CEOs all around the globe sell cheap crap and pocket the profit. The "government" leaders on both sides of the aisle either don't care, aren't competent enough to see what's in front of them, or are knowingly selling us down the river while they line their own pockets at our expense.
On this climate change thing, the thing that I never see mentioned very much is the contribution of Urban Heat Islands. By some estimates they are contributing to as much as 50% of the heat index change. Yet, you see very little being said or solutions being brought forward.I've always thought China is our real environmental scam. India is also a huge pollution issue and growing dailyThere's a lot to that. One is the direct effect - the heat and localized polluting generated. I've always wondered if Mother Nature can handle distributed pollution and heat better than concentrated heat and pollution - looking at southern CA, my guess is, yes, that concentrated overpopulation is a huge problem ... and one that's ignored. The other is one of do we really know what climate scientists claim they know because of monitoring bias. Temperature monitors that were originally located in more remote locations are being overtaken by population growth and included in or too near heat islands. They always seem to pick arguments based on what's more alarming (and produces funding) while neglecting a lot of other data that might say any plans they might put in place will largely be ineffective. But ignoring Chinese pollution while further regulating the US is nuts.
