Penn State scandal (merged)

No way anyone sees him as being "equally" guilty. I just think JoePa and the GA were faced with a very difficult situation, and they made the wrong decision for the wrong reasons. It tarnishes JoePa's legacy because everybody thought that his taking the right action would be a no brainer. Instead, in a somewhat spinless fashion, he passed the buck and did the least he was legally obligated to do.

You're not giving "the public" enough credit. There are some real loons out there.

Doing the least you're legally obliged to do is one thing when it's just about any other crime on the books. It's another thing entirely when it's child rape.

Paterno's part in Penn State's inaction on this is shameful. Too bad it's got to end like this, but his career is deservedly going to end in disgrace.

Because a relative, as opposed to another minor, brings in direct necessity to involve the coach.

The answer to that would be no. It would need to involve Joe if that were the case due to immediate interest and direct involvement with the victim.

Right.

If the GA told Joe Paterno that someone was in the locker room was raping his prepubescent grandson, do you think his only action would be to tell the AD and let it go?

I see your point, but there wont be hypotheticals used to win or lose this case.

Im only going to say this ONE MORE TIME:

The GA should have beat that old mans ass, and called the police. That sick effer should have never made it out of the locker room. Not without either:
a) a police escort
b) a body bag
7) all of the above

I agree with the representative from Florida. Should have whipped his ass and told the cops where to find the unconscious prick.

not run to a football coach first for advice/cause he's old and wise/ he's the face of the franchise/ he looked up to him ect ect.

I will say this though, I am starting to grasp yall's theory that Joe was certainly morally irresponsible in his actions. I've just argued the legality of them. I don't think they have a legit case.

But Paterno looks bad. Never denied that.

Yeah. Technically, legally they may not be able to do anything with him, but to me that is irrelevant regarding what he should have done. If all this is true and he went to his superior and notified them, then stood back while nothing was done, he should quit now or be fired. The others should be hit to the fullest extent.

know juan hear, just speculative regarding the general public misconception. It's bound to happen. Just wait.

I was reading the attourneygeneral release thing and wow at the details they went into. They need to tear the jail down, bury him under it, and then build it back. Can't believe someone would do things like that to kids.

Not sure how anyone supports anyone at PSU after the 98 investigation had already happened.

Read something online that claimed that it wasn't clear whether Paterno ever even knew about the 98 investigation. The senile old man defense is clearly coming.

Listening to a caller on sports radio in Detroit. He is connected to the PSU program (sounds like he is a former player) says he is not surprised by the allegations, but he would have never guessed anything like this would have happened at PSU.

He has tickets to PSU -v- Braska and says he cannot bring himself to attend the game, and wont watch it on TV.

has to be tough to be connected to that

Yes. They will question how much "detail" was given by the GA to Joepa, and that he thought of it as just some horsing around. That the GA didn't give all details, therefore it didn't require a call to police, etc.

And there you have the reason that there was no follow up from the HC.
Now, it's worse than if Joepa would have handled it properly.

I was a little hesitant to initially blast Paterno because I've been arguing for years now that he has seemed incredibly senile and oblivious. Still, this started a while ago, so it's hard to see that defense holding up.

I'm interested to see the reaction Penn State gets at their next home game this Saturday and their next road game in Columbus on the 19th.
