Penn State scandal (merged)

I think if they attempt to sh!t can him based solely on his percieved lack of due deligence in the matter at hand, he has an oppotunity to go after the University.

Leach is still fighting his case. Granted Leach is half Paterno's age and may eventually get a check cut.

Whichever Law Firm would pick that case to defend it would be a business death sentence. Even if you win it, you lose. The association of that would never go away.

I dont think he would either, but the risk remains and the powers that be at PSU should be made aware of it from their legal dept.

Something tells me that Paterno may not want the spot light of a legal suit. I dont think that spot light would shine very brightly on him. Again, any decisions on Paterno and Spanier will likely be made in Harrisburg by the political brass, not State College.

I was just about to type this. Assuming he has grounds to sue, I'm sure there are plenty of things that he doesn't want to come out about his clean program.

Fire JoPa based solely on this incident. We'll need something to follow on court tv over the summer. My Astros suck anyway, and the Rangers havnt made any good trades yet.

If Jopa is the man he claims to be, he would admit what he should have done and retire before he gets fired.
Time to go anyway.

Firing Joe Pa does not seem to be a very good option for the University. Insisting on his resignation privately and allowing him to leave on his own accord would be the way I would think they approach this.

Both save a little face.

Over/Under on the ESPN 30 for 30 on his tenure at PSU? I'll set a bar at less than a year before its broadcast.

The guy was on the staff, and he continued to be on the staff for 7 years. JoePa never followed up, never asked any questions to the AD about why this guy was not in jail yet, and swept it under the rug. And because the whole deal was swept under the rug, the Pedophile was able to continue hosting youth football camps, and committing God knows how many more sexual assault crimes against young boys.

But from what I read, it appears Joe reported it once he was made aware of it. Is it his position to terminate the creep based on speculation/sexual misconduct with out due process?

Sandusky retired in 1999...

Yet he still was allowed to have access to the campus, have keys apparently, until 2009 with his camp for kids. I believe I read the last victim was in 09.

Correct. That is where the confusion lies in this case. Sandusky abruptly retired in 1999 after being considered Paterno's successor for a number of years. Most rumors, and they will likely be confirmed through this investigation, was that his abrupt resignation likely came from rumors involved in this case. Reemember, the first reported incident went back to 1994. Therein lies the problem. There are actually two problems in my eyes.

1. If indeed he was forced to resign because of these rumors, why was he given unfettered access, an office, and free reign at the University with the Two Mile charity?

2. After the horrible 2002 incident was repoorted to JoePa and then to the AD, and then evetually up the chain, despite a 'ban' being placed on Sandusky from bringing Two Mild children onto campus, why was he still able to? Why was the ban not enforced? Why, after hearing about the 10 year old boy and the shower incident in 2002, did Paterno still allow Sandusky access to facilities, up and through 2009?

Just pointing out that former staff members are allowed continued access to facilities after they are done "working" there. I would assume thats a common practice.

True. But not if child abuse rumors persist. That is the problem the administration will find difficult to answer. Including Paterno.

I'm understanding a lot of that PA, really I am, but would you disagree that his allowed access falls in the hands of the Admin rather than the football coach?

Both. Paterno was the head coach. They were his facilities. You have to understand what Joe Paterno is to Penn State. Everyone knew the AD was nothing more than a puppet placed by Paterno. Paterno was in charge, period. Second, even if the Admin allowed it, did Paterno ever object? Don't think so, or he would have said so.

It could be a number of reasons such as selfishness. But something just doesn't seem right about this. I wouldn't be surprised if there was more abuse going on by more people and that's the reason for unjust rules and not going to the proper authorities for this crap. I hope all that knew about this gets whats they deserve.

Rumors have swirled up at University Park for years on Sandusky and inapprorpiate behavior.

The fact that major media outlets, in addition to ESPN and sports blogs, suggests to me that this story is going to get a ton of coverage. I also think that the more we learn about what was going on the worse JoePa is going to look.
