Penn State scandal (merged)

I would argue that the problem with giving Paterno this out is that Happy Valley didn't operate this way. Paterno would have been involved in any discussion about cutting deals or at least privy to the details of how the situation was handled.

Once that is laid out as fact, I will take it into consideration.

YorkVol, I'm not challenging you on this by any means: where does this info come from? Because if the GA was around Sandusky a lot as a kid, there's a whole other set of possible reasons for his silence and continued employment.

It made my hair stand up when I read this.

I saw this in another article but this is the only source I could find right now.

Ok, here's the issue that you and I have with this.

What's worse: someone being placed on administrative leave for a few weeks and having to tell his wife what's going on while having the legal recourse to sue whoever wrongfully accused him if it's a baseless allegation OR

Allowing a monstrous child rapist to continue using the same facilities to rape more children?

To me, that answer is very, very easy.

The answer is not as easy for me.

This isn’t about Sandusky. This is about about a culture that says the football team must be defended at all costs: a culture where the sexual assault of a 10-year-old is reported to Paterno before the police.

Well said.

This is an incredible stance, especially considering your military background.

Are we supposed to prove someone is suicidal until they actually pull it off? Yep, he's suicidal. (as he's hanging from a tree)

Been to Ringgold too, want me to share some personal perspective?

Appears you guys missed the point about State College, its not exactly a metropolis.

I couldn't care less about your perspective of Ringgold as well I couldnt care less if you so choose to give that perspective.

I also love the logic that State college is not a metropolis, but those of us who live in a town similar to state college, in size only, would in no way undertand how a small town works.

Pure brilliance.

Penn State has never been an “outlaw program.” It’s what every school aspires to become. Think about that. Every school aspires to be the kind of place where football is so valuable that children can become collateral damage. If the allegations are true, if the school in fact knew this was going on, then the program should be shut down. If the allegations are true, Joe Paterno should be instructed to take his forty-six years and 409 wins and leave in disgrace. It’s tragic that it’s come to this for a legend like Paterno. But it’s even more tragic that protecting his legend mattered more than stopping a child-rapist in their midst. Damn Sandusky. Damn Paterno. Damn Penn State. But above all, damn the fact that the billion-dollar logic of big-time college football leads to decisions as venal as those made in Happy Valley.

To be fair, as I understand that situation, Paterno pleaded for another year and promised results; then, Paterno delivered with an 11-1 season.

That's a good observation. But, I think we're all kidding ourselves if we pretend that Joe Pa didn't have more power than the AD in Happy Valley. He was and to many still is a god there. Prior to this mess, I would say it's absolutely accurate to say that Joe Pa could have gotten the AD fired quicker than the AD could have gotten Joe Pa fired.

The suicide awareness training in the military was, in my opinion, a complete farce. There were certain steps as an Officer that I had to take if given certain information; however, I do not think that one would be morally compelled to send someone to the Chaplain because some Soldier just left the MWR phonebooth in shambles after he found out his buddy was driving his car and his wife (this example is taken straight from one of the hokie suicide videos).

I will grant that; however, having such power does not automatically mean that Paterno wanted to be involved nor was involved in the weeds of this investigation/cover-up/conspiracy.

It doesn't automatically mean that. But, that could certainly be inferred from the facts we know. That's why continuing to investigate all of this criminally is an absolute must.

And, it also means that this so-called protocol that requires reporting things up the chain of command is bogus. Joe Paterno was at the top of the chain of command in the athletic department.

Darwinism, what's up? Can't explain how Joe Paterno's presence as an honorary BoT member for the Second Mile doesn't support your "disassociation" claim?

That's ok. I didn't think you could.

He's asking his wife, "who works with victims", what to say.

I am not opposed to this being investigated criminally by any and every organization out there.

That's what I have proposed from the very beginning. Part of that investigation would include seeking criminal indictments on Joe Paterno, the athletics director, the president of the University, and McQreary for conspiracy to commit child rape, as I believe there is currently enough evidence to show probable cause that that took place.
