Penn State scandal (merged)

The unbelievable part is that their gutless president was apparently ready to let Paterno stand out there and take the heat by himself.
that's the part I'm talking about. Allowing a coach to hang around like a mascot is a whole other issue.

At this point, I'm not real sure any of them will be having any open mic sessions with the media. It makes no sense legally and most won't be in the same positions for much longer.

Scott Paterno just announced that the family is working on setting up an off campus press conference for JoePa.

IF, and that's a big IFthis press conference doesn't also get shut down by PSU, then he needs to be singing like a canary, concerning what he had explicit knowledge of and/or what he had strong suspicions of, and why he chose to respond in the manner that he did.

sounds like a very bad idea.

I would want every single person that had anything to do with the football program fired. And, I would want my university to turn over any and all evidence of anyone that had knowledge of the situation and summarily fire them and turn the evidence over to the authorities.

Then, I think Penn State should set up a fund for all victims and any potential victims that were molested as a result of their negligence and pay these people lots and lots of money.

How would you finish the season, without coaches?

I don't think that would be a good idea. Considering the timeline any attempt by JoePa to absolve himself of blame is going to make things worse for him.

not until, as LawVol said, the victims are heavily compensated for the damage. It won't truly address their problems, but at least the university will have finally addressed the true victims to their wanton neglect.

That too. Should have mentioned that.

sounds like a very bad idea.

If he's going to go through the trouble of moving to an off campus location, just to get to speak to the media and answer questions, he needs to come with the truth, in regards to his involvement/knowledge. No PC answers, no protecting the program. We're assuming that he's moving off campus to avoid AD involvement, so he should speak freely in a manner to not jeopardize the investigation. Any less than that, why bother?

The "bad idea" bus pulled out of the station in 2002 when there was irrefutable evidence that multiple employees within the athletic department knew something horrible had taken place. No face to save at this point. Throw yourself at the mercy of the court, even if that court is only the court of public opinion.

He's bothering because he wants to make everyone believe that he is the guy he has always played himself up to be, but that's a fantasy. If he's quitting, fine. If it's to try and put this cat back in the bag, he's being foolish.

feels dirty to say this, but the people around him have to protect him from himself here. Any hint that he didn't facilitated Sandusky's behavior is like holding up a sign that says "sue me".

it's so unconscionable that I can't even imagine what my reaction would be. As the father of a 10 year old, this both outrages and scares me.
My oldest daughter is ten. I would want to kill the SOB

He's going to get sued regardless. The court system, even if they find something to charge him with, will dole out a minimal punishment. He's 84 years old. He'll not face prison time. Would you, as a DA, want to be known as the man that put Joe Pa behind bars?

Just got back from hanging outside beaver stadium for past hour and a half. There were TONS of media waiting out there. When they came outside to announce the PC was cancelled, people went ape-$h!+. I was standing close to Tom Rinaldi, he was furious. Media people immediately began to say "he's been fired...Don't leave town...there will be a PC later today/tomorrow."

It is a zoo up here. No words can describe how embarrassing this is to this community who prides themselves in moral conduct.

Obviously, the human rights side of this neglect is the most important most disturbing, but this also just sucks for college football. I'm not trying to say that football should take center stage to the victims. I really do have strong sympathy in my heart for these victims. If they managed to live normal lives after what happened to them, then that speaks volumes about their character and will. That being said, I feel like we are all victims (to a much much lesser degree) by this administration's neglect. We were dooped for years and years, thinking that the figure head and icon, Paterno, was an upstanding fine person. Fans of college football grew to admire the coach and the program that he built. This story just sucks from top to bottom.

Let their sports management undergrads run the show. No sense in punishing the athletes.

I just can't imagine, if I were an athlete at Penn State, being even remotely interested in going out and playing football for a university and for an administration that allowed such horrific things to go on.

Of course, I'm not an athlete, and I can only speculate on how they must feel.
