Penn State scandal (merged)

Just got back from hanging outside beaver stadium for past hour and a half. There were TONS of media waiting out there. When they came outside to announce the PC was cancelled, people went ape-$h!+. I was standing close to Tom Rinaldi, he was furious. Media people immediately began to say "he's been fired...Don't leave town...there will be a PC later today/tomorrow."

It is a zoo up here. No words can describe how embarrassing this is to this community who prides themselves in moral conduct.

communities really shouldn't do something as stupid as priding itself on its moral conduct.

The whole things makes me shake my head.

First, I feel terrible for the victims and the unspeakable things they have went through.

Second, I feel bad for the players and former players. Their memories are ruin.

Third, I feel bad for the fans. When they think of their two national titles, part of their team was run by a child molestor.

Obviously, the human rights side of this neglect is the most important most disturbing, but this also just sucks for college football. I'm not trying to say that football should take center stage to the victims. I really do have strong sympathy in my heart for these victims. If they managed to live normal lives after what happened to them, then that speaks volumes about their character and will. That being said, I feel like we are all victims (to a much much lesser degree) by this administration's neglect. We were dooped for years and years, thinking that the figure head and icon, Paterno, was an upstanding fine person. Fans of college football grew to admire the coach and the program that he built. This story just sucks from top to bottom.

It just goes to show that people only truly care about one thing: Themselves.

agreed. The amazing irony of this whole situation is that one of the main reasons penn state people love penn state so much is the fact that Paterno and company have always done it "the right way." And now, its going to end with the worst scandal in the history of college sports.

I emailed a buddy of mine earlier who is a PSU grad and huge fan to get his feelings on the debacle. Here's his response:

"It's sh***y. There is no way to defend a POS pervert. He is an ex-coach but it still gives the university a black eye. As far a Paterno, he did report to his AD but he should have followed up when nothing happened.

What I wouldn't give for my basketball coach inviting some recruits over for a barbecue right now."

I had to laugh at that last comment.

We'd find a way. It's about doing what's right at this point, not trying to win football games.

If I was a player I am not sure i would be able to play in that game. Just don't think I could look those coaches in the eyes knowing they really only care about themselves.

Pure emotion. Not an ounce of circumstantial evidence.

You're right about the purity of the emotion. Maybe more than an ounce of circumstantial evidence, though. I never considered Paterno a clinically-defined moron incapable of reasoning...which I think he would have to be in order be unaware of what was going on.

Everyone who lived and went to school there bought into the Happy Valley fairy tale. It's a core part of their identity. It's irrational rather than stupid: you know it's a myth but that still doesn't make it any less emotionally true. It's like any patriotism, really. Loyalty and identity based on a shared mythology. Whether the myths are true is mostly beside the point.

I agree that because of Joe Pa's "reputation" that it will be worse, but the Baylor scandal is still the most horrible to me.

The real sad part is, the NCAA technically can't do anything to Penn St for this.

If Penn State had any balls, he wouldn't have the option of stepping down. His ass would be fired.

He should be fired on the spot, but it takes a couple days to fire someone. Let's see what happens soon. He should never, ever coach another game.

After the trustees work out the departure plans for Spanier and Paterno, they should go ahead and resign themselves. Clean house all the way.

Saturday at Happy Valley will probably be the quietest a 100k have ever been.

Someone is apparently trying to organize a full five minute long "We are <clap clap> Penn State" cheer to demonstrate solidarity, that it's bigger than all this, etc etc. But yeah, you've got to think that for the bulk of the game it's going to be pretty glum.
