Penn State scandal (merged)

I would think that your rapist can count on the Unversity to help him hide would be deterrent enough for high school seniors.

You would think, but they have a different way of thinking in that area I guess. The reading I have been doing on this has been very eye opening. I read a comment, and he may have been a troll, but he said 'that there are much worse things going on in the world than a blow job, get over it.'

And here is another from another forum:

'Paterno's statue will remain standing according to PSU's board of Directors.

They stated that they do not want to upset the alumni!!!!
Translated; They are scared out of their minds that the money machine will dry up in order to replenish the coffers after satisfying all the forthcoming lawsuits if they remove the statue.

They just don't seem to understand do they?!?!?'

And they make fun of the south...

No, I think the football program doesn't run the university like it did at PSU. Not daying it couldn't happen, but this is years of cover ups, 2nd Mile cover up, a DA murdered, what else do you need?

Maybe the dynamics in cult of personality that surrounded JoePa and Penn State doesn't exist in exactly the same way in a number of SEC programs, but I could conceive of a similar situation being possible at a dozen other schools.

For the record, I don't think the cover up was for "the good of the institutions" but rather for selfish reasons.

If they gave up Sandusky, they would have all been heroes and Jo Pas legend would be bigger than it was.

His ego, his friend, and his program was more important

I'm not sure this is true. It's obviously what should have happened, but I'd bet there are still a bunch of calls for him to resign.

Well let's face it, there are cover ups at all SEC schools in some sort of fashion. But none to the magnitude of Penn State, especially rape, of kids for several years. I am not saying it can't happen, but a decade and half? No way that cover lasts that long imo.

But I think it was covered up for both of the reasons you mentioned above.

What do you think should happen to the statue?

Conceiving of a guy like Sandusky raping children was difficult/impossible for people in the first place. I think there are unfortunately many people out there that would act as selfishly as JoePa and the other three, and if you think it played a part, football programs that are revered as much or more than Penn State.

But I think it was covered up for both of the reasons you mentioned above.
I still think selfishness was the primary motivation, the good of the program being second.

If I were calling the shots at the university, the state would come down and Paterno's name would no longer be on the library. In addition, I would voluntarily vacate all of his wins.

We don't know that the DA was murdered, and if he was, whether it had anything to do with this case. Given that he chose not to charge Sandusky, i'm not sure why anyone involved with the coverup would have offed him.

One of these days, one of the victims will talk to the press. And if he's willing to have a photo released, it's going to be taken in front of that statue. PSU's PR people are probably having fits trying to convince the BOT to take it down.

i'm surprised LSUFREEK hasn't made a gif of it yet

From what I have been reading I will agree with count. Paterno had too much power there.

I agree with that, but people would still be calling for i. No matter when the story came out, and no matter what Paterno did, there would be claims that he knew earlier, could done more, etc.

Don't get me wrong. Paterno unquestionably made the wrong, immoral decision, but I can see why he may have thought that covering it up would have helped him protect his legacy.

I just don't think there is a football program that has that much power over the school. Don't get me wrong, football is probably bigger in the SEC, but we're talking about a guy who coached since 1966 and controlled the University basically. Hopefully we will never find out either.

Misread this part, I agree.

Costas had an interesting comment on Meet the Press this morning. Did you see it?
