Penn State scandal (merged)

Sorry for being a little ignorant, but I'm coming here for a little help in understanding something.
Why did the PSU administration essentially take up for Sandusky in 2002 when he hadn't been on staff since 1999? Also, why was the guy hanging around campus for another ten years after leaving the staff?

Not that it compares even one iota, but I have had a protective instinct kick in around other people's children. I was at the zoo last weekend and saw two parents leave their children unattended for a minute or so while the kids were horsing around on one of those huge, heavy-metal old school one way turnstiles. Their girl was between the meshing metal parts with the boy trying to ride the gate, and got the thing moving quickly, with some momentum and weight, and I covered 10 feet at about the fastest rate I ever have in my life to grab the gate and keep the girl from getting sandwiched by about 200 pounds of steel bars. She got out, I pulled the boy off and immediately went straight to the parents and gave them some hell over it.

After I had let the nerves calm down a bit, walking back to my car, I was glad I grabbed the gate and hoped that it would lead to the parents to being more aware of what their children were doing. But maybe I could have frozen and watched in disbelief as that little girl was about to get seriously injured or worse. My point is, it was only then that I found out what I would have done in that situation.

I see what you're saying. I still disagree. God bless America.

I agree. It's sad that the game Saturday will be a pep rally for Jo Pa, and the victims and parents will see 100,000 people show support to someone that could have put a stop to this 10 years ago. Blows my mind.

I don't know about his. Maybe the students, the rest of the fans and players, not so sure they will feel the same way. I think it will be a lot of empty seats and they lose bad to NU.

You just seem to be showing more venom towards those who are putting themselves in a hypothetical situation than those involved in this crapfest.

Apologies in advance if that's not the case.

I don't think it's gotten to that point... This is understandably a very touchy topic.

What other facts do you need?

The ones neither you nor I have!

I don't give two craps about Paterno's legacy, the man is ruined.... ruined. In the meantime Sandusky is running around on a disgraceful 100K bond. You don't have a friggin clue what did or didnt happen, its all speculation so get off your high horse, relax, and wait for the rocks to be turned over one by one.

As for the second question, it's my understanding that the foundation he was involved with (2nd mile) was permitted to use many of PSU's facilities.

Look, this thing is being investigated and it will all come out eventually. Neither you nor I have all the facts at this point, you're only speculating about what you know. Justice will be served, there is no way around it in this media firestorm. I'm on the side of the victims here and you guys want to string up Paterno, but in the meantime Sandusky is walking around on a measely 100K bond. Now THAT is disgusting!

Years later??? Sounds just like the Catholic Church defense, it will all come out eventually( after NUMEROUS more victims)..And as for "stringing up" Paterno??..First of all maybe you should check your use of an analogy like "stringing up" before posting it so carelessly and second off, how can ANYBODY justify Paterno not following up on a report of ANYTHING relating to a sexual act on a minor?????..Anybody who is holding Paterno blameless is just plain blind..Or stupid..Or both..And in case you didn't notice the timeline, Sandusky wouldn't be "walking around" on ANY bond right now if Paterno had followed up on the initial incident..It would be resolved by now with either jail time or Sandusky getting cleared by the legal system...Sure hope Paterno sleeps well knowing how many victims he could have saved by choosing to do the right thing instead of only being interested in wins for his precious "record".....

PSU and his foundation had an "Unofficially official" type of deal going on.

Paterno wanted to coach there until he croaked, and we all damn well knew it. He's not going out on his own terms, even if he gets to coach three more games, it's because his higher ups made it

Actually, he's not being forced out. The decision was his and not the university. He made the decision because in his mind he believed that if he said he'd be retiring at the end of the year, it would take some heat off. the university needs to step in and do the right thing for once and fire him effective immediately.

Yes I do. I know two kids were raped, witnessed by a GA and a janitor. Fat moron. None of this is speculation. Also, there will be more to come out I am sure. Get back to your hole.

You heard Millen and Blackledge comment on the issue, both of those guys love Penn State as much as anything else in the world. When they were asked if JoePa should coach another game, they were both at a loss for words.

Either way, up until this broke it was known that JoePa had no retirement plans in place, and now he did. At most he changed his mind because of the pressure from the circumstances, which makes it not of his own will right there. And this scandal will be overshadowing his legacy.

He can't be allowed to coach the game. He just can't.

First, I think it's debatable as to whether or not he had plans to retire because there was some legitimate speculation that he would. Regardless, there is a huge difference between you deciding to do something with no pressure other than the circumstance you create and being forced to retire by the University. Additionally, with something unprecedented like this, anything short of flat out firing is irreprehensible.

This is one problem I have Milo, and I realize we have different opinions of it, but knowing what he knew and never did anything about it, he doesn't deserve to retire, he should be fired. He indirectly hurt many people, and probably ruined just as many, indirectly by turning the his cheek to save his legacy.

Anyone that backs Paterno is wrong. There are some times when you cant support people. It all looks bad no matter what he does.Hey people have resigned for less. Bruce Pearl had to resign over lying about a barbeque. Joe Biden plagirized a college paper and had to forfeit his 1988 election for President. This is so much bigger. We are dealing with little children who depended on their adult heros to look out for them.Thinking about a football game, leading chants with fans in a time like this is wrong.Really souless action there. Paterno are you not a human being? Were you not a child at one time 75 to 80 years ago. What if one of your heros had raped you Paterno and Knute Rockne had passed the buck and no one did anything if it had happened to you?

And in so doing not only damaged his own legacy but severely damaged the university he gave nearly his whole life to. Isn't that some measure of punishment in and of itself?

"This was a conspiracy of cowards."- Jay Bilas.

Completely true.

I have had the misfortune of having to deal with children that have been sexually assaulted. Not only have the pervs committed a horrible crime, they have taken innocence from a child. A ****ING child, and some of you want to set back and act like blowing this **** off and saying he done what he was suppose to do, is bull****. Paterno should have taken his old ass directly to the police when he found out that Sandusky hadnt been charged. Screw him!! I dont give two ****s about his legacy.

He was wrong!!

I held it as long as I could
