Penn State scandal (merged)

Wow. Reading the Grand Jury report literally made me sick to my stomach. It saddens me greatly that Sandusky was even allowed anywhere near PSU after the first allegations took place. Penn State is going to be in a lot of trouble, but not as much as Sandusky himself will be.

Gotta see more before I can take the new rumor seriously. There cannot be a sizeable secret cabal of deviant rich PSU boosters who wanted to screw around with young boys. No way.

If he was accused and then no charges were brought by the da in 98. Why would the story have been public? They basicslly fired the guy. Now if it comes off witnesses or the da was paid off its a diff story.

Madden said "young boys"...I wonder if he meant "kids". The Second Mile is certainly full of young boys and girls.

This is going to make one hell of a movie....it keeps getting deeper and deeper....and where the hell is the missing PA from 1998?

Paterno was completely out of line. The Ga was wrong, but just think, if Joe pa had administration so scared, just think how intimidated the Ga was. Joepa was GOD!!!!

Most of their fans on theie board are only outraged about what happened to JoePa, it's all about the W's unless it happened to one of your own. Let's just sweep this under the rug about Sandusky because JoePa is innocent approach.

Sorry Lions but this news is not going away and more heads will roll, instead of rioting try to use that energy and get some morals.

Really dude?

According to his moral stance, it appears that homosexual rape is worse than heterosexual rape. Interesting.

For freak's sake. Let me spell it out.

1. It is impossible to imagine that there is a sizable group of rich PSU donors with the same predilection as Sandusky -- 10 to 12 year old boys.

2. If the Second Mile offers "help" to both boys and girls, though, and if some of those girls are post-pubescent, then it becomes easier to imagine that there might be enough rich sickos around PSU that there could some kind of a prostitution ring involving them. I am guessing that the universe of men interested in messing around with a 15 year old girl is larger than the universe of men interested in messing around with a 10 year old boy.

That specific enough for you?

1. Paterno did not cover it up. He reported it. There is nothing in the Grand Jury report that says otherwise.

2. The analogy being made by many in here is that if one has the knowledge (which, according to everyone in here only consists in a report) and the ability to put an end to atrocious conduct, then one is morally obliged to do so. So, either America and Paterno are morally bankrupt or they are not (or, persons in here have some kind of moral double-standard, which goes against the concept of morality (universal)).

How different is accessory to cover up? It's easy to assume he knew nothing and a follow up wouldn't have been warranted, but it's as naive as possible.

I know you're itching to maintain that he's a great man, but there is no way to come away from this assuming he's a great man or that he did all that he knew he should have and could have done. No possible way.

I will tell you for damn sure that he knew nothing came of what he reported.

comment by a PSU alum on another board

Supposedly, Joe knew of things as early as 1996 and supposedly a former player was molested and Joe helped to keep it quiet. This player, with help from Paterno, got a great job right out of college at a place run by Paterno's friend, which helped keep the situation quiet. Also, apparently, the Second Mile was made to prey on young boys who nobody would believe if they told anyone anything which happened. It was made for Sandusky and not for a charity. Everything Paterno and everything Jerry and the Second Mile will be flipped upside down and plenty more will come out. In light of new details, Paterno could end up getting investigated and even charged. He may not even live for that much longer, but it could get very ugly for Joe from a legal standpoint, as well as much uglier from a moral standpoint.

I hope its not too true, but I wouldn't be that surprised if it is. This is a subculture that not many are exposed to, but once you are, it's eye-opening.

His arguments aren't what I have a problem with. It's the postulates from which he derives them. Make some arbitrary crap up how human knowledge is obtained, derive some conclusions from them geometry-style, and then use that as an iron clad basis for all moral action. It's sophomoric.

Using Paterno's apparent indifference to allegations of child rape -- as long as he did that one thing that he's required to do, no problem! -- is actually a great example of how bankrupt Kantian morality is. Perfect in Kant's airy fairy ivory tower, but would make you a monster if you adhered to it in real life. Your brother's upstairs hiding from a gang of killers, and they knock on the door and ask if he's there? "Come on in, guys! I can't tell a lie!"

Kant's works are invaluable as an exercise in learning how to think seriously about things. As a guide to how to live, they're toilet paper.

The problem with the slippery slope of philosophy is that I can find some academically renowned or obscure "genius" to support almost anything I want to do and call myself moral when it's finished. In a world of avoiding absolutes, everything imaginable is passable.
