VFL....Every poster on VN is one, while 2/3's of the guys who have actually strapped on a helmet for UT are not.
I agree it should be their decision but as you noted earlier it's a 4 year commitment with values that are intended to carry on for a lifetime.
One game and/or one year and out (or two years) falls woefully short I feel.
VFLs? The best of the best. The pillars of the UT program. We know the names:
Manning
White
Berry
Al Wilson
Cafego
Majors
...continue
Those that distinquish themselves on AND off the field for a life time (Vol for Life!). A good Georgia game by Howard is not quite cutting it into the VFL ranks in my opinion.

Oh, OK. Then just annoint as a VFL any warm body that wears an Orange T-shirt I guess. Yeah, that's a good discriminator.

At the end of last season I was excoriated for saying the Pig would not see the field much next year and if he does we're in big trouble. He wasn't clutch. What was everyone's infatuation with the Pig. Was it the nickname? It sure wasn't his play.
This right here. The term gets thrown around a lot, and it's hard to say where the line should be drawn - I like Cordarrelle Patterson, but the dude never went to class and played all of 12 games at Tennessee. But we're more than happy to claim him, of course. What about fans that went to school elsewhere, for whatever reason? What about fired head coaches? What about fired head coaches who are now employed by Auburn University, but take every chance possible to mention Tennessee and their love for it? What about guys from Michigan who seem really happy to be here but probably didn't much care about UT before they were hired? What about fired head coaches who were native sons of East Tennessee, played for and graduated from UT, and won us a national championship and conference championships? Why do we give Dave Hart so much crap about being a Bama grad, yet heap praise on another Bama grad (and former Bear Bryant assistant) named David who coached our offense to the greatest period of UT football most of us have ever seen?
The Volunteer Spirit is hard thing to define, and I think it goes much deeper than just UT sports, down to the roots of what makes the state of Tennessee such a special place and Tennesseeans such a rare breed of people. JMO. But then there's all the great Vols that haven't been from Tennessee, and Tennessee fans from all over the world... so that could all go out the window, depending on how you look at it.
Just my take on it.
You act like its anointing someone King lol.
" Well son, I have reviewed your last 5 years on this earth and Im happy to call you a Vol for Life. Nothing comes with this title besides what you already had but you can now call yourself a VFL and be called it by your peers."
This is pretty much your definition. If that makes sense to you than I dont know what else to say besides that im wo lying to bet they've done more for the university than yourself.
Who's saying they don't want him on the field? I haven't seen that. We all wish him well and hope he makes it back. The debate is who's the more talented player between him and Von Pearson....I don't think it's particularly close. Pearson's gonna start at slot whether Pig comes back or not. I'd love to have Pig come back and join the slot rotation, but I don't think he's start ahead of Von at this point....maybe if he'd not had the issues and played in the Spring....but not now.
I did at least get an education from UT (and a degree), learned to spell, and learned how to construct sentences that someone could read and understand. You on the other hand, can not do either.
If he's saying he will have something to report in a few weeks then it's obvious they are trying to work with him to get through it. Im hoping the kid can make it back.
