If I remember right I was taxed about 15% not including SS and others.

However I did not have kids and was a dependent so they probably had an effect on it?

This is not complicated math if you do not have dependents and make 20k you will be paying taxes that is a fact unless you give all your money to charity.:eek:k:

I know I'm late to this discussion, but I just wanna say thanks for setting the record straight.

Everyone knows that all the problems we Americans are facing is b/c of Socialism. High gas prices? Socialism. My job just got shipped overseas? Socialism. Our kids don't know science or math? Socialism. We can't find Osama Bin Laden? Socialism. Katrina nearly destroys new orleans? Socialism. Credit market is crap? Socialism. Can't pay your mortgage? Socialism. Paying $700 billion+ for a war in Iraq that we're fighting pretty much on our own? Socialism. Health care unaffordable? Socialism. National Debt skyrocketing? Socialism. Gang-related crime on the rise? Socialism. Stock Market down? Socialism. Government spying on your phone calls? Socialism. Can't get married to the one you love? Socialism.

If only we weren't so god-danged politically correct and respectful of others, we'd return to the country we were before we balanced the budget, before we led the world in technological innovation, before we sent a man to the moon, before we gave every American the same civil rights and freedoms, before everyone could vote, before slavery was abolished - you know, before our country got dragged down by all this political correctness BS.

It's driving me mad. Geez, people, wake up!

Yep, if someone else was claiming you and you had no other deductions, you would have paid 10% on your first 8k (roughly) and 15% on everything above that, up to 32k. At least that was the rate schedule for 2007. I'm not sure how long ago you were a kid.

However the vast majority of those in the bottom 50% of wage earners are able to count dependants and other deductions, hence dramatically lowering their IT obligation to 3% on average. The top 50% of wage earners paid an average of 14%.

Gang-related crime on the rise? Third, fourth and fifth generation welfare recipients have now found work.

Stock Market down? socialism has to be the culprit. Free markets wouldn't do this and just let the market price stocks.

Government spying on your phone calls? This is an enormous problem. I hear people every day complaining about this one.

Can't get married to the one you love? Only popular opinion is propping this one up and your average joe (respects to LG) just doesn't care.

There are definitely legitimate points that can be made arguing that most of the issues you reference approve are due to an overextension of government. As our government continues to grow and overextend its original Constitutional boundaries, we creep ever closer towards Socialism.

If you had asked me a month ago if it was inevitable that we will be come a semi or completely Socialist country, I would have answered that it is only a matter of time. But with the recent public outcry and disgust over the bailout and socializing of a portion of the financial markets, I have found some optimism.

In this instance, the amount given isn't what matters (or what remains after giving). It's about giving up a large portion of your disposable income. Of course, democrats never take into account that the "rich" reinvest their money a lot of times creating jobs, creating secondary jobs, and boosting local economies.

Political correctness has absolutely nothing to do with being respectful of others. The liberal free lovers are some of the most close-minded, irrational, intolerant individuals I have come across, but what makes it worse is they act as if they are open minded and tolerant. I don't claim to be tolerant, although I am open-minded and willing to listen to people's opinions and think them over. Back to PC, watch the frickin' media for five minutes and you'll realize that PC means playing nice for everyone other than white males.

It's very basic, read the constitution and bill of rights and it is very clear of how a government should govern and the role of government. Socialism is not a part of the plan our forefathers had in mind. Period.

oh, so tax percentage should be based upon one's ability to earn income rather than usage of government provided essential services.

You're saying that the guy paying $500k per annum to Uncle Sam should pay more, but can't articulate why better than he has more to live on.

Why not just take 990K from the guy earning $1 million and they would both have the same to live on, thus ensuring absolute fairness.
