Politics aside, tonight's speech

I listened to Obama's speech.Didn't bother with the repub's response.

I think the most striking thing I came away with was the atmosphere of the Chamber.I have watched speeches in that chamber for a lot of years.I saw more standing and applause from the right, this night that at any other time in the last 40 years.Simply amazing.:eek:hmy:

They got pretty wild at Hitler's speeches too. Not comparing, just saying what does that have to do with anything pertaining to actually doing his job.

Just saying that there were a lot on the right that obviously liked what they were hearing. That the truth of what he was saying was agreeable by many of the Repub's.
That the possibility of what Obama was saying had merit.

how bad would it really be to make Chevy, Chrysler and potentially Ford file for bankruptcy? By all accounts it seemed to have worked for the airline industry. I know the amount of jobs is so much higher, etc, so what exactly would it do?

i'd argue the companies would be far better off going through a reorganization. the argument against that prior was that people wouldn't buy a car from a company in bancruptcy, but they aren't really buying them anyway.

Or that they didn't want to be portrayed as the bitter angry party. Many things are done strictly for appearances.

I noticed that for the first 1/3 or so of the speech the Repubs were sitting on their hands and slowly they kept getting up. It looked a lot different because the camera would quickly pan through the Repubs and then sit on all the Dems that were standing, cheering, waving posters, asking for autographs, etc.

In the end though, it did seem as if most were standing.

i've thought that for some time, but I just wondered why it doesn't even seem to be an option at this time.

i usually fall slighty on the left side of topics but i think they should have had to file bankruptcy and start over. i cant support any of these bills. not this one, not last years nor any more. i could be very wrong but they make me extremely nervous.

Because when that is done the unions lose all they have gained and will more or less have to start over. The unions are very powerful.

My reactions to all of the controversies:

1) Pelosi comes across as a wacko who has set the cause of women to be taken seriously back about 20 years. Ten of those last night.

2) Obama did not do what I wanted, which was to give numbers, timelines, and explanations for the main ingredients to the spending plan.

3) Although I was not pleased, you have to give the guy credit for his presence and speaking ability. He is gifted in that regard and I think in terms of general politics and power the speech was a success.

4) I did not happen to hear the MSNBC quip "Oh God" when Jindal came out to speak, but I would agree that is very unprofessional.

5) Having said that it was an unprofessional comment, and assuming that it was derisive, it was also quite prophetic. Jindal's speech was close to the level of torture of watching Pelosi's artifical beaming.

I heard pretty much what I expected from Obama. Biden's dumb smiling and pointing and Pelosi's orgasmic seizures were almost too much to bear.

In regards to Obama's and Jindal's speech-giving abilities - who cares? Oratory skills mean nothing if you follow bad policies, such as the Pork Bill and shutting down Gitmo.

I can't imagine that any conservative likes any of what is being espoused by this administration.

My guess is that they were applauding the limited shift away from the blame game.

he needs to stop telling the country that we are facing by far our greatest economic crisis since the great depression, even if it is the truth.

Agreed. I am pretty tired of scare tactics, we saw it out of the old admin, now the new admin is taking it and running with it. I also agree with what you said yesterday about Obama's needing to come out and assure the country things will get better. That is the only thing he needed to do last night and he called out a bunch of high school dropouts. Seriously?

In that respect, they are failing miserably.

Whatever they do at this point is going to labeled as bitter and angry and the worst, racist. Even when voting against a bill that was rammed through without debate, while the vast majority of the public had serious and valid objections.

Jindal's speech was pathetic. Even republican pundits thought it was poor until the end when he touched on the GOP base issues

what scare tactics? you act like they were scaring us in believing we may get hit by a terrorist attack.

I tend to agree though he did finish better. He did not have the natural ease you would hope for during a response such as this. He will get better with time though.

While Obama did not have the same trouble he certainly missed a golden opportunity. I wouldn't call his address a success.

Of course it will. I like him, but he'll never be president

Didn't catch their names. Fox news after the speech. I always listen to Fox so I can get the republican point.

You thought Jindal's speech was good one? LOL

lol, I thought so. His delivery was quite bad, but he actually had points and messages. He wasn't just painting broad strokes like Obama continues to do.
