Politics aside, tonight's speech

My reactions to all of the controversies:

1) Pelosi comes across as a wacko who has set the cause of women to be taken seriously back about 20 years. Ten of those last night.

2) Obama did not do what I wanted, which was to give numbers, timelines, and explanations for the main ingredients to the spending plan.

3) Although I was not pleased, you have to give the guy credit for his presence and speaking ability. He is gifted in that regard and I think in terms of general politics and power the speech was a success.

4) I did not happen to hear the MSNBC quip "Oh God" when Jindal came out to speak, but I would agree that is very unprofessional.

5) Having said that it was an unprofessional comment, and assuming that it was derisive, it was also quite prophetic. Jindal's speech was close to the level of torture of watching Pelosi's artifical beaming.

can't we realize speaking ability has nothing to do with being a good president?

the biggest problem with our country. Someone with a great voice wins over far too many people even though he has yet to back up anything his prophetic voice spews out.

Obama will speak on the effects of his bill in generalities only, he will not be nailed down, he will not give time lines, all this points to the fact that even he knows and believes the majority of the "stimulus bill" was not stimulus.

For the record this was just about what I expected from him. The presence wasn't outstanding but good, speaking ability was good, he did not deliver what America needed though, he did not communicate his plan or vision well.

What about "The Great Communicator"? A substantial portion of his success was his ability to rally the country and create optimism.

id rather have a president that was a mute but could get the job done compared to someone that puts up a facade based on rhetoric and "speaking ability"

What about "The Great Communicator"? A substantial portion of his success was his ability to rally the country and create optimism.

There was much more to him than communicating to the American people, his biggest asset was his common sense approach.

he needs to stop telling the country that we are facing by far our greatest economic crisis since the great depression, even if it is the truth.

reagan was able to make us believe that things would be better very soon, inflation would be lower, etc. all i've heard from obama is that the world is currently ending and some time long in the future we will recover. not exactly going to get the average american to go buy a new car or something.

because he's not helping the average american buy a new car. He's helping fund wealthy investors. You can give Chrysler, Chevy and the banks all the money you want, but until that money starts hitting the average Americans paycheck, it's not doing any good. The majority of Americans realize that they can't go out and afford a new loan at the moment.

he certainly didn't do it by spending an inordinate amount of time harping on the shortcomings of his predecessor. That would have destroyed his message of hope, much like it has for......nevermind.

well if many of them thought about that in the beginning then a lot of this mess would have been averted. many people want to blame the banks etc for the housing crisis. well when people sign for the loans they are saying they understand the terms of the contract. Personal fiscal responsibility needs to be fixed

huh? if americans buy new cars the union employees at chrsler, chevy, etc will keep their jobs which helps the average american quite a bit.

His message was contradictory. He talked about believing in the private sector and not wanting bigger government but every one of his priorities (energy, healthcare, education) was all about how the government is going to handle these problems.

Then he talks fiscal responsibility and claims it will be achieved by cutting waste (oddly he criticized McCain for this tactic saying it wouldn't amount to much savings), reducing spending in Iraq (definitely some savings but perhaps $50 billion at most), and raising taxes on the top 1 or 2%.

This is a complete fantasy. Since he's been in office, they've committed more spending (not traditional budget mind you) than we've used in Iraq, Afghanistan and Katrina combined! The omnibus bill is bloated beyond belief. While he inherited a major deficit, he's growing that deficit by a huge amount.

i know that the americans buying new cars will help chrysler, chevy, etc. My beef is that giving the money to execs isn't going to help the average american be able to buy cars.

BUT if managed right it can keep Americans from losing jobs,

in what world are you living where they are giving this money to execs?

you really expect this money to trickle down and create automobiles that can compete with Toyota and Honda? I sure as he** don't.

if obama wasn't in the pocket of the unions these companies would be going under. this money is going to the overpaid union "middle class" employees. i agree it wont help them compete.

i agree with that. But I continue to state that it will only be another temporary fix and within a few months, we will see them back in the capital asking for more money. How many trips will they have to make before Obama realizes this method doesn't work? How much money will he have blown before he understands this can't work?

Note, I didn't mean the money was going into the execs pockets, just that it was going to them to spend on their company. Bottom line, if the average American can't buy a new car, they aren't going to. And those that can are going to look at how much better Toyota, Honda and European models are for durability, comfort, resale value and how little the difference is for them to go that route.
