Portal Activity (News and Rumors)

Acting as if they didn’t exist.

Btw the NCAA certainly recognizes them as part of the program as they have to register in the portal to go elsewhere
So do you believe these players came into this blind? They thought they had a roster spot and out of nowhere CTV pulled the rug out from under them last minute. They didn’t think they were competing for a potential spot on an SEC roster…

Is this exclusive to Tennessee or is this happening at every school? I’m assuming it’s the latter but I don’t know. I’m sure there are kids that grew up Texas baseball fans (just one scenario) and they want a chance at making the roster even if that means they don’t and have to transfer afterwards.

At first you were arguing about the transfer portal and how CTV has a inflated number of people entering and leaving the program, leading to believe that it was much more so than other schools. But that’s not the case. We currently have the #1 ranked incoming transfer class with 5 players coming in. Arkansas is #2 with 8 coming in. Yes, our numbers may be inflated because Tony was trying to build a competitive roster after coming to a traditionally…underwhelming…baseball program. Can you provide the data that we are out there still “coloradoing” kids now? If so I will change my opinion.

But it seems that you’re mostly arguing that players should be able to transfer in season or at least after fall. But what does that have to do with CTV, Tennessee, and this forum? There is a big college baseball subreddit, with a ton of members from all around the country that you could go and talk to about this issue; without being here, talking about CTV being the big bad wolf.

I really just don’t get your angle. You come in and argue with fans who defend their coach, just like every fan base would. I’ve seen you say “I’m a college baseball fan” but I still don’t know why you are here. I didn’t really think you were a troll just looking to get a rise out of people but at this point I just don’t know what you’re trying to prove.

Anyways, that was really really TLDR. Sorry to my fellow Vol fans for that.

I did not think it was possible for the baseball forum to feel like a football forum, but this is just proof that certain posters can make anything a miserable experience for everyone if they try hard enough.
Yep, like I said earlier... he sucks the life out of this forum for me. I've ignored him, but the replies remain.

my stance really is simple

throughout the history of college baseball the walk on has been huge. Without the sacrifices of those kids and families college baseball would have never survived due to funding…

now the NCAA poops on them as they are completely unprotected from coaches that have no limits and are able to take as many as they want without consequences. Many (yes TV) load up the boat as full as it can go and throw away the left overs that aren’t protected like the 3 I named.

My beef is with the ncaa allowing this to happen. It’s a travesty to treat a group of players so poorly.

and yea it hurts my soul to hear a parent like preach say he doesn’t even count these kids until they make the 40man. That’s sad

He continually changes the subject and omits to answer questions when he is caught out like you caught him out. Preacherman asked him for examples since there were so many according to Bruin. The only 2 he could come up with were exactly Zellem and Ebbing. That's why he didn't answer your question, and changed the subject to your guess that he may have also meant Miller. That is a hallmark troll move. He had later added as his third example Gagen; but then he corrected himself and said, well, Gagen went to pitch at Walter State. When he was asked: Couldn't the others (of Bruin's imagination) have done that too, Bruin again didn't answer.

So he has no examples. He skipped the entire season posting here. He came in full bore attacking CTV non-stop when the portal opened. He also said (accidentally) (it was an irrefutable implication, not directly stated) that he opposed "the only way Tennessee could win" baseball games (in his opinion). That is about as antagonistic as one can get. All of this garbage amounts to him being angry that we are winning. And an addiction to bickering. His initial attack when he returned was cheering new rules against early commitments because, he charged, Vitello was "the worst" about that. He was ill-willed and feckless enough to call Preacherman a liar yesterday. 🙄

His posts -- negative and attacking -- in the past few days now total 15 pages at about 20 posts per page, if you look at his post history. As long as someone answers him, he will overrun a thread with his anti-Vitello and anti-Vol garbage. He is not a Vols fan.

He has a history of doing this same garbage in football in the past. But I think most people there now ignore him, which may be why he is all-the-sudden here. He skipped all of last football season because we were winning. Just like he skipped this past baseball season with the great second half and the CWS win.

It's weird that he thinks he is clever. If anyone answers him, he takes that as winning. I won't mention him again. I just wanted you to know that you were right about Zellem and Ebbing, and that this is how he rolls.

Are you talking about BruinVol

@vol66

Maybe start a thread particularly for Bruin's bitching so he'll stop taking over threads with it? It's getting tiresome clicking on a thread thinking new info is there, only to find out it's just page after page of Bruin trying to stir the pot.

Pitching staff will be interesting in 2024. Burns gone, Fanning to NC State, Dolly, Halvy, Lindsey, Joyce, Jenkins, and Fitz take the draft, a few others left for lower level schools (wouldn’t have pitched anyway), and Cam hung up the cleats.

Yes we picked up some, but seems like the pitching staff got decimated.

You remember that time you quit posting for a few years?

Yeah, that was nice.

Lol

It will happen again soon don’t worry

Pitching is going to be just fine. I honestly believe next years team will be better than this year.

I agree with you Bruin. We can either all sit around and only talk about how Tony’s perfect and UT championships, or we can occasionally look at the underbelly of the sport & program. Personally, I prefer talking about the good, the bad, and the ugly.

I think pitching will be slightly worse depending on more portal guys

But at this point I think defense is a big step backwards

now maybe we hit enough to offset that as that’s going to be really good

The NCAA isn’t pooping on them. I’m sure “ALL 3” of the young men you referenced trying to make the 40 man at Tennessee had guaranteed spots on other rosters. But they chose to try and make the roster at Tennessee (whether it be growing up a fan of the team, wanting to play in the SEC instead of mid-major, etc, etc). You act as though they’re lambs being led to slaughter and it’s ridiculous. Either way you’re gripe is with the NCAA.

I think when they are cut(don’t make the 40man) they should be able to go to another D1 school and play immediately. The same way as a JC or NAIA

that’s one way they are pooped on by the ncaa

The opportunity to play professional baseball for MLB and its affiliates is going to take another hit in 2024.

In 2020 MLB didn't renew their affiliation with 42 MiLB clubs. A significant blow.

The reduction from 40 rounds to 20 rounds of the draft also has reduced opportunity.

Currently, MLB has placed a limit of 180 players on the Domestic Reserve List (DRL). This number can go to 190 in the off season. The DRL includes each MLB club's minor league domestic affiliates. The MLB Collective Bargain Agreement ( CBA) signed this year substantially increased minor league players salaries. However, the CBA also reduces the number of players on the DRL to 165 starting in 2024. That is 30 clubs reducing the number of minor league players by 15.

And I mostly agree with you on that…even if they knew they were coming in for a “tryout” situation I suppose. But again your gripe is with the NCAA and you’re taking it up with Tennessee fans.
