Portal Activity (News and Rumors)

I’ve posted I think the roster should be required to be set after the fall semester and any kid that is cut should be able to transfer to another D1 and play that spring

Unfortunately the ncaa makes those kids sit tight and not even practice with their current schools.
they could go to another d1 and practice that spring IF that program had room on their 40 man but again the ncaa doesn’t help these kids at all

“IF that program had room on their 40 man”

But they generally wouldn’t, if rosters are “required to be set after the fall semester.” So I don’t really understand how rosters can be required to be set after fall semester and kids can be allowed to transfer mid-year and play in the spring — that would require somebody to be cut from the second team’s roster during the spring semester — very unfair to that kid (who calculated correctly that he could make the roster at the school he chose), right?

And to your point (and mine) the guys that didn’t get their chance this year (Jenkins, Joyce, Fitz, Fanning)….are now gone. Not sure the guys that didn’t get their chance in’23 are the answer for ‘24.

Another way to look at it is this, the starters typically go deep, not much need for a lot of relievers/closers. Pretty much replacing Halvy, Russell (who moves into a starter role), Burns, and…Cam? Who replaces them? Evans, Zander, Combs…portal?
Causey and Snead were brought in for that purpose.

After all the dust settles i'm really curious as to where our pitching staff for the weekend will rank amongst the rest of the SEC. Dont want to rely on a team having to average 9 plus runs a game.

look you guys are missing the entire point here

the 3 kids I named didn’t make the 40 man roster. They were cut before the season started. One went on to Walters and the other two presumably finished the semester classes. They can’t legally practice with the team if they aren’t on the 40man

The genesis of this conversation (and therefore the topic) was @preacherman20 posing the question “why would a kid enter the transfer portal in the fall?” to which you responded (paraphrasing), “because he got cut, Baseball Dummy.”

As proof of this assertion, once you were challenged, you cited guys who entered the transfer portal in the summer, not fall.

So yeah, it stands to reason that some of us are missing the point, given how poorly you’ve made it.

To make this as simple as possible…guys who enter the portal in the summer do not prove a theory as to why guys would enter the portal in the Fall. Ebbing, Zellum, etc. may have been cut. But they didn’t portal in the fall.

In case you all missed it, @Freak has asked that you take the Bruin discussion to its own thread specifically designed for senseless, mind-numbing argument over a topic that only 1% even care about. Leave this thread for discussion about the things intended, which is what the other 99% of us came to read.

Wonder where Tony fell short on Chase?
I don’t think the communication was always the best, which I don’t think was intentional. Bottom line, I just don’t think Burns and his agents trusted TV and FA any more. Now I frankly think that’s an overreaction, but everyone is entitled to do what they feel is best for themselves. And burns does have a ton of money on the line here in the next 12 months

I think he has some greedy people around him who don’t always have his best interest at heart over their own, but it is what it is. Sometimes you deal with this type of thing with high profile athletes. TN will be just fine, and Burns will be just fine too. Wish him the best

No university athletics program has NIL. It cannot be an enticement to a particular school. It is simply the ability of the player to control and monetize their image.
Yea I get that

To clarify this post from last night

I’m told baseball doesn’t do nil there because it greatly affects the schools use of need based money which is based off income.

it makes sense to me and passes the logic test but I have no idea if it’s true or not. It did come from a former player there so tifwiw

I believe the starters will be a combo of Drew Beam and 2 of Holman (who obviously isn’t on roster yet, AJ Russell, Matthew Dallas, and Wyatt Evans). I think if they land Holman it’s Beam/Holman/Russell and if not it’s Beam/Russell/Dallas

Your bullpen will include:

RHP - Causey, Snead, Combs (if he is back), JJ Garcia, Hunter Sloop, Austin Hunley

LHP - Evans, Kirby, Sechrist, Behnke, Dylan Loy, Brayden Sharp, Bryson Thacker

If you land Holman, then you get to add either Dallas or Russell to that bullpen group. Obviously not all of the guys listed will play a ton (they’ll settle on their 3-4 main guys from each side), but that’s still a pretty big embarrassment of riches in the pitching department

They are also after a LHP in the portal but I haven’t really heard if those plans changed when they got so many guys to campus from the recruiting class

Well said…and I’ve said this before, and it’s hard to believe for a lot of fans, but the communication from the coaches to the players was lacking. That led to the exit of a lot of players IMO.

Players and parents hear one thing. Coaches say another or speak coach talk. The two do not always equal.
And circumstances change, so what a coach said today may not work tomorrow. I would say it across-the-board in any level. There is not great communication between the coach and the bottom of the bench. The players and parents hear you are going to get the start and the coach actually says you’ll get a chance to earn a starting spot. Having talked to enough players, I cannot imagine Vitello or Anderson, promising any player any particular spot or role

I don’t believe that for a minute. You don’t recruit at elite levels and sustain success like this staff has without excellent communication skills. Lack of playing time led to movement in the portal. Plus, I’m sure Burns was told he would be a starter (as that was the original intention but its a fluid situation), however he didn’t perform and it was best for the team to move him to bullpen.
Staff would lose the team (and ultimately their jobs) if they allowed players to dictate their positions. Coaches make team decisions, and some players aren’t happy with those decisions. They are free to look for another opportunity. I’m certainly glad that Lipscomb, Ortega, Lawson, and Scott didn’t…

To preachermans point, when I say not intentional, I think Burns took things one way where Tony and Frank didn’t necessarily mean it that way. Just a miscommunication, but Burns no longer had full trust in his coaches and whether that was logical or not, if a guy has lost trust, he’s lost trust.

Bottom line, is he didn’t trust that they would start him all next year (and Tony/Frank wouldn’t promise it either). I think if he had stuck with it he would’ve had a monster year as a starter, but they had proven before that if he wasn’t performing they would move him and do what’s best for the team. And from Burns perspective he wants a guaranteed starting spot because that’s the difference in probably over a million dollars for him in 12 months.

I don’t think any side hates the other, and Burns still competed his ass off until the year was up, but the fact is the two sides were simply no longer aligned
