Portal Activity (News and Rumors)

Well said…and I’ve said this before, and it’s hard to believe for a lot of fans, but the communication from the coaches to the players was lacking. That led to the exit of a lot of players IMO.
Outside of Burns, no one that left was going to see significant time. That’s why they left, which is understandable. Outside of the guys drafted (and Burns), who has left that you think would have seen meaningful time or innings?

I don’t believe that for a minute. You don’t recruit at elite levels and sustain success like this staff has without excellent communication skills. Lack of playing time led to movement in the portal. Plus, I’m sure Burns was told he would be a starter (as that was the original intention but its a fluid situation), however he didn’t perform and it was best for the team to move him to bullpen.
Staff would lose the team (and ultimately their jobs) if they allowed players to dictate their positions. Coaches make team decisions, and some players aren’t happy with those decisions. They are free to look for another opportunity. I’m certainly glad that Lipscomb, Ortega, Lawson, and Scott didn’t…
They are excellent communicators and recruiters. And they absolutely do not promise guys things (that I’ve heard of) or intentionally mislead kids

But there’s no doubt if you’re a guy not playing as much you aren’t getting the same level of communication as a regular player. I think from Burns perspective he might’ve wanted a little more explanation than he got, whereas TV and FA probably felt they were just doing what was best for the team.

But you are right in the sense that once Burns got moved to the pen he was probably gone no matter how good the communication was before during and after. He wants to start next year for draft purposes and his agents have planted it is in his head that it’s not a guarantee at tennessee (and frankly, it isn’t a guarantee because V has proven he will do what’s best for the team and he refuses to promise guys anything - it has to be earned)

We are living in “everybody gets a trophy” times. Heaven forbid a kid gets benched because he wasn’t playing good.

I don’t think his moving to the bullpen was the issue with him really. I think it was more about he and his camps perceived lack of coaching he was getting. Jmo

To preachermans point, when I say not intentional, I think Burns took things one way where Tony and Frank didn’t necessarily mean it that way. Just a miscommunication, but Burns no longer had full trust in his coaches and whether that was logical or not, if a guy has lost trust, he’s lost trust.

Bottom line, is he didn’t trust that they would start him all next year (and Tony/Frank wouldn’t promise it either). I think if he had stuck with it he would’ve had a monster year as a starter, but they had proven before that if he wasn’t performing they would move him and do what’s best for the team. And from Burns perspective he wants a guaranteed starting spot because that’s the difference in probably over a million dollars for him in 12 months.

I don’t think any side hates the other, and Burns still competed his ass off until the year was up, but the fact is the two sides were simply no longer aligned
I will bet that IF Burns doesn’t perform at Wake as a starter, they will move him to the bullpen. With that said, I’m confident that Wake will give him every opportunity to succeed as a starter. I also wish Burns success but hopefully his advisers are reminding him that there’s no guarantees in baseball. You perform or you get moved or benched. Personally, I think and hope he crushes it as a starter (except if we play them).

We have a kid interested in Wake Forest. It’s not inexpensive. When a school says they’ll meet your need, some of that can include loans that are repaid. Meeting your need does not mean a kid is getting a big scholarship for a full ride. Former Vanderbilt player I know still had to pay 25% of his tuition; his need was met after his family had to pay. Paying 25% of a Vanderbilt education isn’t inexpensive.

Only one is Fanning, but on this team next year he still would’ve been the 2nd or 3rd righty from the pen, and he will get significantly More time at nc state so that one makes sense

Burns is the first guy they truly didn’t wanna lose that they have lost

I totally agree with you, the only difference is that they haven’t done it before like V and FA did and I’m sure he got all sorts of promises. Again, I don’t think the people around him totally have his best interest at heart. They all want the massive payday from the raft, which I guess I can’t really blame them for

Thanks for sharing

Meeting the full need of the student means if the family EFC is 10k they pay 10k. If it’s zero then they pay nothing

It’s different for every student.

so an nil deal could disrupt that for some and not others

Hope that makes sense

Best pitching coach in college baseball,,,award winning coaching staff but not receiving good coaching. Sounds like his advisers aren’t too sharp.

If Burns performs like he did in post season as a starter at Wake this young man is a Top 5 draft pick next season!!!!!!

Last thing on Burns because it’s kind of overplayed at this point.. it’s really as simple as this:

Burns/his agent want to start every game next year because it is better for his draft stock. V and FA would love to have Burns back and would have started him, but were never going to guarantee him anything because that’s just not how they operate. And therein lies the problem and why Burns is now at another school (I’m guessing one that has promised him the Friday night job). He had been moved to the pen once before (which was 100% the right call by TV/FA) and so they didn’t trust that it wouldn’t happen again

I disagree. Jmo

Plenty fair especially considering all the reports that say that move was big

fwiw the reason I downplay it is I know someone in his “camp” was very vocal about the perceived lack of coaching from FA BEFORE he was even moved to the bullpen. This was happening early Season

I know someone also. Jmo

Burns future is at the back end of a Bullpen.

And that is ok.

The game has changed and bullpens are more important than ever. Sad he couldn't see that. Hes a pure two pitch guy and there's only a few guys getting by on two pitches as a starter. Strider is having to up his changeup usage just bc of this. The other guy is freakin Jacob Degrom. There's a reason he looked completely night and day different when he was taken out of the rotation this yr. He's an elite reliever.

It is a sad situation all around though, because Burns is a TN kid, and I think he would’ve been a Friday/Saturday night guy to start next year and if he had a big year (I think he would have) everyone wins, but they didn’t see it that way clearly
Burns could have been another TN legend if he had stayed. Guess it wasn’t meant to be but selfishly wish it had worked out. I hope he has a long and successful MLB career.

I'll add, fwiw, that I heard the same thing regarding FA. I'll also add I've heard a few other pitchers comment on the same thing.
While I'm sure CB didn't care to come out of the bullpen, I believe the bigger issue is related to the perceived lack of coaching, as well as the relationship with FA.
Either way, it didn't work out. Doesn't mean FA sucks, and it doesn't mean CB has a lack of character.
