Why does Tim Banks hate playing young guys? The youngest safety we’ve played since he’s been here is a redshirt junior
They’ve made it clear they value knowledge over athleticism.

That will work vs teams that are playing at a talent deficit. It falls apart vs teams with real athletes on the other side.

It does no good to know “where to be”, if one lacks the athletic ability to get there “in time”.

I’ve been quite disappointed in Kelsey. The development and management of our receiver room just hasn’t been what we should expect.

Ultimately my bigger criticism is related to Kelsey but beyond him.. it’s that:
- we have resisted injecting new and experienced talent into our offense when given the opportunity and instead just promoted from within
- we have yet to fire a coach when there are 1-2 people that I think bring little to the table
- we haven’t found an off-field position for Chop and haven’t found 2-3 more people like him to augment some staff shortcomings. We rely too much on Vol Club to carry water for recruiting

Heup has evolved quite a bit from when he first got here. He’s a far more impressive coach than he was and I hope we continue to see optimizations.
I’ve grown so weary of the tired old philosophy of simply promote from within.

It breeds stagnation, and leads to degradation of results.

@KingVFL do the two receivers you know were in on - assuming they enter the portal… did they have Tennessee offers out of high school? And would they be upperclassmen or younger guys

I feel like we could upgrade at RB over Bishop. And I don't mean to slight Bishop. He's a hard runner, and not a bad back. I just think we could find someone more electric. But I wouldn't do it at the risk of alienating the other backs on the roster. I'm hoping Lewis takes a step forward and takes the RB1 job. I think he can be electric; it's just about achieving his potential.
Lewis can be special imo. Better than Sampson possibly if defenses continue defending us with light boxes.

Beyond the premise that Pope needs to be replaced is that Heupel needs to hire better, more experienced, more proven, assistant coaches. Heupel is living in an echo chamber which is never a good thing.

Elarbee, Pope, Halzle, and Martinez should be replaced/upgraded.
Martinez is doing a great job

  1. Buddy, I can’t tell if you are really missing my point about Nico’s meeting or if you are just pretending you don’t get it for the sake of argument. Only other thing I’m gonna say about it is I would feel a lot better if it hadn’t happened, and apparently so would Mike Matthews.

2. Talking about ignoring things, did you or did you not hear Ramon Foster say that NFL guys have approached him with questions about WR development at UT?

3. Of course they’re going to say don’t panic. What else are they going to say? But I don’t think their answers to any pointed questions give anyone else the warm and fuzzies about the situation, excepted maybe you. And speaking of overreacting: All I did was pose a rhetorical question expressing concerns that I’d about guarantee most Vol fans share about the WR situation, and you jumped straight to crazy, short-sighted, and illogical. I definitely wouldn’t have wasted as much time on this as I have if you hadn’t gone there. And lol at calling Ramon Foster my prophet. You gonna act like he’s not plugged in to the Tennessee football program? And you haven’t even acknowledged where I mentioned Swain. He’s said plenty on his podcasts About the WR situation to cause concern.

And speaking of patience: All I did was pose a rhetorical question expressing concerns that I’d about guarantee most Vol fans share about the WR situation, and You jumped straight to crazy, short-sighted, and illogical. I definitely wouldn’t have wasted as much time on this as I have if you hadn’t gone there. (I don’t think anyone else has taken much of an issue with me other than you and maybe one other guy that commented at first. I guess you might have picked up a like or two here and there along the way, but so have I).

I don’t need a reminder of what I said. I remember what all you said just fine too. And there you are throwing around the “appeal to authority” thing again. How does that prove my concerns crazy, short-sided, or illogical.

4. Everything must be black and white with you, isn’t it? Yes, I can say Huepel has done an amazing job and I believe he can fix the receiver situation, while at the same time expressing concerns about that situation and how it got to this point.

Good to see that you acknowledge I am not alone in my concerns. In fact, I’d say the majority of Vol fans are at least somewhat concerned about it. Maybe we’re all crazy, short-sighted, and illogical. Looks like you are taking it up another notch with “stupidity”.

Don’t you think that’s a little bit dramatic regarding a message board post from some rando? Which I don’t know why I’d even ask that to someone who replied to my rhetorical question immediately with crazy, short-sighted, and illogical. And now, maybe stupid.

That’s very generous of you as I am sure it’s killing you.
Can we give these guys their own debate thread? It won't clutter up the Portal Thread, and we can still check in to see who's winning lol

To be fair to Banks the safety position is the last line of defense and has to know exactly what to do in all situations or you can give up quick scores. They are also the quarterback of the defensive backfield and are often responsible for making checks before the snap. It’s great to have an explosive eraser back there but if he doesn’t know the entire defense you will get smoked in a hurry. Will Brooks was athletically limited but I would bet a fortune a freshman in his place this year we would have lost one or two more games. He got every ounce from his talent and made many game changing plays. Just saying experience and knowledge at the safety position is paramount in playing elite defense. It’s why Boo was at star instead of safety as a true freshman. All JMO.
