On Jefferson, I know nuance isn’t an accepted tactic here, but here’s my position. He is an excellent raw athlete. In HS he was fast, ran great routes and was very physical. He was recruited by top ten programs in two sports. I really wanted us to sign him. Savannah thought so much of him that he personally visited him in the eleventh hour to get his commitment. He had two minor surgeries last year. He missed a lot of Summer practices. He missed some Fall practices. He was never in line for major playing time. He did not make a meaningful dent in the stat line because he didn’t play. Of the WR’s that did play, two caught balls for over 300 yards. One is Williams, the other is a junior. Other Freshmen did make it on the field because they put in their time. None of them made a big difference. Had Jefferson been healthy, I think reasonable people believe he would’ve gotten mop up catches like the other Freshmen not named Williams. I’m still excited about his potential. If you’re not, that’s ok. I’ll actually still be excited about his potential if he doesn’t play this year. Not every kid progresses at the same rate. See Hyatt. That said, I actually think he will contribute this year. In fact, I’ll go out on a limb and say that Matthews, Staley and Jefferson will all be receivers worth recruiting. They are all very fast, cut well, take contact and CATCH. They were all a part of Heupel advocating for this type of receiver. I really wanted those three guys last year to all sign. I’m still a believer in Jefferson now.
