Coach Majors coined that nickname for himself due to his continued mediocrity and pressure to win from everyone. Eventually he was fired, rightfully so and Tennessee improved into the elite for the next 10 years afterwards. Maybe if he wasn’t downing alcohol during the day throughout the week and focused more on winning he’d have had a national championship and better winning percentage like his successor had. Then had the nerve to hold a grudge against the School, Dickey and Fulmer right up just before he passed. All because Tennessee wanted more. I think the schedule pumped up the defense....and the team...to a degree. Both were rated a bit too high. Hey, we had company. Boise and SMU also benefited from a nice schedule. 'Bout time we got a schedule like that. Better make hay next year, too. At some point, we're gonna get the shaft like UF is going through right now.
I went on a lot of recruiting visits with Majors when he came to Atlanta. He was always a gentleman and represented the University with class. That is what made him a really good recruiter. We got a lot of TOP talent out of Georgia when he was our coach. It was a pleasure working with him and his staff.
If this is the stance they and our AD is going to take, that is their prerogative, but it confirms they are good with being mid and not pushing to the next level like other teams seem to be doing. So I don't want to hear about Heup saying "we're competing for championships" when they are seemingly taking this type of approach. Hopefully they surprise us with some kids in the next few weeks, but right now this is looking really bad. Me, as a TN grad, I'm not going to keep pumping money into a football program that is good with just having a nice season and a bowl game. But that's just my stance...
