'25 Portal Thread

If that’s how you take it, sure. But any qualified journalist wouldn’t have made that post at all. And the fact he did then words it like that, that screams incompetence to me. I’m not bashing AP as an insider, and I’ve honestly never had a problem with him, but I am bashing him in terms of making that post while also claiming he’s a reporter.
I understand that. But as a “reporter” he can’t burn his inside info or he will lose them. I would say VQ is more of a beat than reporters. Here’s what ive learned about VQ. Listen to how they don’t say (word) certain things and listen to what they do say. No one is 100% in recruiting. If you don’t like the info don’t buy. One of these great members will always copy and paste for us.

Don’t lol at me, boy.

If you want to think Heupel made a strong push for a 160 lb WR after losing Bru and Thornton, go ahead. We need a physical WR who can block.
I got your boy. Lol.
If you think Heupel made a push for anyone they weren’t interested in go ahead.
I don’t care what you think we need!
Heupel doesn’t make pushes for anyone and everyone.

Paraphrasing Josh Pate:

“The best programs will spend a lot of money but you won’t know about it bc they’ll spend it on their own roster - guys they recruited out of HS that they develop and trust. That’s how you build a culture. OSU didn’t spend $20M on their roster bc the portal, they spent that to retain their roster. People get caught up on the few guys who are transfers.”

Regardless of if we get Jefferson or not I still think we need to add 1 more WR.

Ideally I would love our portal class to look like

Skilled and experienced WR
Interior OL
Backup DT
Safety who can push for a starting spot
Who do we project as our starting safeties? Turrentine on one side-who replaces Brooks?
Any consideration for Boo going to the back end with someone else taking the star spot? He might be too good to lose at his position though but this puts him on the field every snap.
Any portal looks for safety?

We don't use the "S" word.

Makes me shudder. We were hanging 40 points on SEC teams and still losing...good grief. That defense is definitely the worst I can remember in my lifetime at UT. Still have nightmares about that Arkansas RB threatening to run for 300 yards on us...Darren McFadden? Not sure thats right. Memory isnt what it used to be sadly. That season was just brutal. No lead or game was safe, no matter how fast or how many points we scored. Some of these NegaVols complain about this 24 season, but I am a defense guy. Thats where I always played growing up. This season was one of the most fun to watch for me...my favorite play in football is a safety. We had 2 or 3, and should have had more because there was terrible holding in the endzone vs Bama (don't make me post those pics again lol) and the same thing happened vs somebody else too. We should have legitimately had 4 safeties this season minimum. We earned them. Safety is absolutely backbreaking...more than a pick6 IMO. You not only give the other team 2 points, the free kick means they usually get the ball at midfield, with momentum, poised to get another 7. Absolutely devastating and I will never get tired of watching them.

**side note: our punter/punt team deserves credit for pinning our opponents inside the 5 so much this year. They were fantastic, and it swung games in our favor. Very underrated aspect of this team and defense IMO

My God!! How many roster spots does Georgia have?? Unless they are planning on this huge portal exodus that hasn't happened yet. Don't know exactly, but can't have much more time for portal entries!!
local sports media personalities down here are saying they will lose 20-30.

I think its mostly reactionary, and I would assume they would have lost more than they have if that were the case. so I don't buy that it will be that bad, just based on the current ones leaving.

I think our defense was pretty good. However I do think as the season wore on teams figured out how to slow down Pearce, Omari, and ONL. Really unpopular opinion but I would’ve loved to have still had Baron; I think he gave you a lot and made Pearce even better when he was here and had to be worried about.
I agree on Baron. I'm not sure on teams figuring out our DL. There seemed to be a very clear point when our overall defense went from dominant to very good. For me, that point was when Keenan Pili went down for the year. I don't think his contributions to the LB unit and overall defense get enough credit. I feel like we still had a good group of LBs without him but nobody was able to provide what he did. That guy was a menace in the run game, at a minimum decent in coverage and invaluable in terms of getting the defense set and in the right position to be successful.

Committed to Oregon? I guess now all the sofa-surfing recruiting analysts around here that didn't want Benson will now claim he's another "elite" portal WR that our coaching staff couldn't land.
"Staff can't close", "this is a bad look", "we were still evaluating", "we aren't serious about winning championships", "Oregon is reloading while we are sitting on our hands"...did I miss anything?

He is correct but you can’t also ignore the fact that several key starters on their team are from the portal and that is with a lot more 4-5 star players on their roster than we have. We don’t seem to be willing or able to pay what it takes for the handful of difference makers in areas of need that do enter the portal. The highest ranked portal player we have signed is Heard and I wouldn’t describe him as a difference maker

He will probably be a stud at Oregon. We should have tried to get him. I mean we aren’t getting a Carnell Tate or anyone like that. All the really good WRs are gone from the portal it seems.

Perhaps the guys that are in the portal that you think will be difference makers won’t be. Just like the example you gave of Heard.

True but look at their main skill players. They are guys OSU recruited out of HS. You are right about us not paying for the real difference makers. Take the Branch bothers. Guess they are good enough for UGA but not us.

We tried to pay them, but they didn't want to talk $$. How is that on us?

Georgia had/has coaches on staff who had coached them/recruited them before. They were clearly the favorite because of those coach's relationships with them.

Here's proof:

“Georgia’s connections are strong with the family. James Coley recruited them at Texas A&M, David Hill is from Las Vegas and has known them for a long time, and Donte Williams recruited Zion to USC,” On3’s Pete Nakos said.

Heard was number 20 overall, we haven’t signed a difference maker out of the portal. Heard was only ranked as high as he was due to his original ranking. He had very little experience. The highest ranked player we have signed out of the portal with even halfway decent stats was Holden Staes at 34 overall. We aren’t competing for the more established transfers

I agree with your point about focusing on high school recruiting. But we have to be even more successful than middle of SEC. It has been foolish to not be competitive with OHSt on WRs and RBs which help separate once you are in the playoffs.
middle of the SEC? We were top 3 this year.

you millenials need to stop being so needy demanding instant gratification.

its a gradual process to climb to the top. and our climb is steeper and longer than the schools you want to compare us to.

Day has been at OSU for a while and walked into a loaded roster. until this year was ALWAYS the also ran guy. top of the Big 10 but never could put them over the top. this year is still pending.

Smart was at Georgia for 5 or 6 years before he won the SEC. and he walked into a loaded roster, and one of the best recruiting set ups in the nation.

Bama has more talent but was down this year.

Sark at Texas took years to build to this point, with infinite money, and a better set up. and if you think our schedule was easy, don't look at Texas's.

Oregon has been stable for decades, has infinite money.

we are climbing. are we there yet? no. does that mean that we aren't making progress? No. every year our recruiting gets better. the incoming class is the best we have had yet. the last two have been more than 50% on that mythical Blue Chip Ratio standard.

the goal this year was always just to make it to the playoffs, but as soon as we did that it suddenly becomes not good enough because we played the best team in the nation first round.

No one started where we were and has made it as far as we have.

Our coaching staff can't close.
