'25 Portal Thread

Question. When someone in the portal "commits" to a team, do they sign something binding? If not, what's to stop us from recruiting a kid just because he's "committed" to another team? Until they actually enroll, couldn't we still talk to them?

Not technically. Though back channelling through NILs and agents is always fair game.

It happened to us with Isaiah Neyor. But I am not sure if the rules were different then.

With the addition of AJ, I'm not convinced we need another WR. I mean if the coaches want one, they'll get one, but I could easily see a WR rotation this year of MM, Brazzell, Staley, AJ, and Boo. Bring in another and I could easily see someone being left out.

Still think we should be good on the OL if Elarbee has developed any of his HS guys, but bringing in another one isn't a bad idea.

If the freshmen are okay with not RS, we could make our RB room work.

Still would like another safety, even though I know it won't happen.

JMO, but a solid DT to add to our rotation might be our biggest need left.

Also, I'm very bored. Portal action needs to heat up.

Need a sure-handed guy. Doesn’t need to be a burner. Just a guy who will get the first down when it’s 3rd and 6.

We really need Brazzell to lock in and take that next step. If he remains lazy then we may need another WR who can replace his potential.

Where did the " lazy " moniker come from?

Both Ainge and Basilio have shared their info on him. He was called out for not paying attention in film study as one specific but generally he’s just not putting in the work to realize his full potential. It’s not the end of the world. Hyatt admitted he himself wasn't working hard enough but eventually got serious and it worked out for everyone.

Agree with all of this. I certainly wouldn’t add two more WRs. I want to see our young guys pay and develop.

You think 7 receivers is enough? That’s crazy talk

Who do you want to take snaps from? Promises were made to MM and Boo to keep them here. Brazzell, Staley, and AJ will all be expecting snaps as well. Then you have 3 freshmen that can take some snaps in a few games and still RS.

I expect we'll probably try and get one more WR, but I also don't think we need one. It's a luxury more than a need. And taking one could potentially push someone into the Spring portal if they feel they're not going to get the PT they want.

You are a couple hamstring injuries from have having zero depth. There is not a WR rook in the country that has less than 8 in college football.

Tennessee had 9 scholarship WRs in 2024. We experienced a greater than usual amount of injuries, with Bru, Squirrel, and Thornton all missing time at various points. Even with those injuries, only Bru, Squirrel, Thornton, Brazzell, Matthews, and Nimrod played meaningful snaps. If you want to include Webb (which is a stretch), Tennessee played 7 WRs in meaningful minutes last season. Leacock and Staley weren't utilized. Spillman was a non-scholarship player who never played (maybe mop up against UTC?).

And again, that was a year in which we experienced an inordinate amount of WR injury. I can see needing 8, but we don't really need 9. And 7 plus Boo is 8, if they're serious about giving him time at WR.
