I'm seeing Sampson grade as 3rd to 5th rd pick. Idk how much that pays.

I think if he has that grade that he’s better off to go pro. Monetarily he will be in good shape and he increases his chances of NFL longevity. No doubt this season has been a special one for him, but it’s been tough on his body with how many carries he’s gotten. By coming back for a season with what probably would be another heavy workload, he probably shortens his NFL career.

Hard to even get excited about high school recruiting anymore. It’s just a guaranteed 1 year deal basically and after that who the hell knows what will happen.

Love the team and school and just view players as the mercenaries that they (for the most part) are. Sucks that we don’t have the luxury of getting attached to players anymore, but it is what it is.

I personally see him as the best NFL type back in the draft. His ability to run between the tackles is run through traffic is elite. He also did it consistently in the best conference in college football. But I also get the Jeanty love as he is has great contact balance and bounces off tacklers. But I really see them both abve the rest of the field.

I think once the tape is turned on, it will become apparent Sampson is at minimum a 2nd rd talent. The two things though that could hold him back is his fumbling and maybe he wants to prove he is more of an assett in the passing game. I think he can be, though we haven't utilized him there much. So I suppose there is a world he gets pushed in the 3rd rd. But that is still about 1.25+ mil a year.

TIFWIW...read it again...TIFWIW...but Basilio is saying that Sampson is considering a return but wants big $. Also says Boo Carter's "team" has made it clear he will be expensive to retain. Also said Jermod McCoy will likely be looking for a bigger payday.
Seems like we’d pony up for all 3 of these guys if we really wanted to make a serious run at the playoffs next season?

Knock on wood, however so Tennessee has primarily lost guys who have been buried down the depth chart and are looking for opportunities to play. Tyler Barron has been an exception as an impact player that clearly left for $.

I can get excited about a #10 recruiting class, expecting that we see less attrition than Bama, Georgia, A&M etc...

League minimum is 800k if that tells you anything. If he's drafted before the 6th round, he's making over 900k in year 1, with a 4 year guaranteed contract of at least 4.4 million.

Think we hold onto McCoy because he’s doing so well here and because his dad and Willie Mo have had a good relationship for many years.

Boo I’ve always deep down thought had the potential of being a flight risk. I hope we hold onto him. He’s a phenomenal talent. Just becomes a numbers game. Who is worth how much. At some point we won’t be able to pay everybody what they want. That was the case with Jalen Smith. Wasn’t worth what he was asking for. Will that be the case with Boo? I wouldn’t think so. I figure we’ll do what we gotta do to get him taken care of, but you never know for sure because it’s not public knowledge how much a particular player asks for.
Jalen probably wasn’t going to start here though once the new class got here. His speed just wasn’t up to par. Boo will thrive in this defense. He’ll be a player anywhere he goes but if I were him I would get a fair deal and stick around. I think in two years he goes to the league regardless and makes a ton. No need to risk that on changing situations imo.

Heard, yes, because of his position and our need. I think McCoy got fair money, but doubt he broke the bank. I'd guess he's due a raise after this season. It's been said many times, we don't do bidding wars. We offer what we believe is fair and if they want to chase money elsewhere, so be it.
Wasn’t McCoy a freshman all-American last season? WOuldn’t think those guys are going cheap?

I'd rank him only behind...

Jeanty
Kaleb Johnson (Iowa)
Omarion Hampton (UNC)
Dylan Sampson

All of this makes sense and is how it works now.

Carter got a freshman deal and then balled out. He's probably fielding bigtime offers. I assume we're prepared.

McCoy got a deal that reflected one season of solid work in the P10. He's now arguably the top returning CB in the country next season. I assume we're prepared.

Sampson is likely getting draft feedback that reflects a guaranteed amount of money that's not beyond the realm of possibility for us to pay. Does it mean we'll come to an agreed upon amount when both sides weigh the pros, cons, and opportunity costs? Not necessarily, but it could absolutely happen. At which point at least one of our existing RBs will likely hit the portal, too.
