Agreed. We have been banged up at WR all year. Hard to believe we’ll go an entire season without any injury issues. Considering Heupel didn’t want to play Matthews much this year because of his inexperience, I can’t imagine he wants to have 3 true freshmen backups.

We need some bodies. I hope we pursue someone.

Who says it was bc of his inexperience?

So, we lose Nimrod, Webb, Leacock, Bru, and Thornton from the WR room. That’s a lot of bodies.

I would hope we get a portal WR now.
Do we know for sure that Thornton is gone? He seems to have a lot to gain by returning if he has the eligibility. Still doesn't feel like he's reached his potential. Maybe he can claim a redshirt from 2021? He only recorded stats in 4 games that year.

You can message it however you want. Inexperience. Lack of trust. Not understanding the offense. All of these are things you’d expect from a true freshmen which only supports my point of not wanting to rely on 3 true freshmen next year to be our 2nd string.

Most intriguing WR currently in the portal IMO is Duce Robinson. Big dude. But what I think and what the coaches think are probably two different things.

Callahan follows him, so you might end up happy.

Kid also plays baseball. Maybe TV can help out.

We could tap back into that MTSU market with Omari Kelly. Former 4 star WR that had a very nice year for MTSU.

The days of big bodied freak WRs being the prototype are over. The 6’0-6’2 guys that can play all three spots with good speed that run good routes is what the game is going towards. Jamarr Chase, Justin Jefferson, Davante Adams, Cooper Kupp, Deebo Samuel, JSN, Malik Nabers, Chris Olave, Garrett Wilson, Amon Ra St Brown, Ladd McConkey, Puka, Nacua, Brian Thomas, and Devonta Smith all fit that profile. Mike Evans, Nico Collins, DK Metcalf, and AJ Brown are the only guys that really fit the Larry Fitzgerald/Calvin Johnson type of mold

All of the WRs entering the portal makes some of us to ask, is this the talent of the players, or the talent of the coach? Our passing game has not been what I thinks it should have been all year. There are a number of factors which can cause this below average out come. One, is it the quality of the wide receiver talent recruited? Two, is the the quality of the coaching? Three. Is it the ability and play of the QB> Four. Is it the quality and performance of the offensive line? and five, is it the offensive plays being called by the person call the plays? Each of theses areas can be the source of the problem but most like is a combination of all of them. it is obvious that there is a lot of room for improvement. can we make the necessary improvements before next Saturday? I, for one, think we will beat Ohio State and Oregon, but we will need to clean up our game to do it. The off season this Winter will determine if we will be contenders next year, or if we will be pretenders next year. This is the most important off season we have faced in a few years.

Play the game well and you'll do alright.

Maybe. But MHII doesn't match that description. Neither does this years projected #1 WR Tetairoa Mcmillan.

Marv is a generational type of talent though and if Ryan Williams or Jeremiah Smith were draft eligible they’d go ahead of McMillan. Also try not to look into the size as much as the skill set. The game is just going towards skillset and versatility more than size is what I’m getting at

Matthews has shown he can throw a block, so maybe he takes over Bru's spot? Brazzell on the other side and Squirrel in the slot. Then Staley. But unless we plan on playing true freshmen, definitely could see us taking a couple of WRs. Or, I wonder if we would consider making Seldon a WR?

Seldon played some WR in HS. He runs upright like a WR...i think he should play in the slot. He just isn't a natural RB like the other guys we have. He would be deadly on slants and short crossing routes though to get him the ball in space. Bishop will be RB1 next year and split carries with Lewis. I think Baker ends up RB3 for sure by the end of the season...and Morris is a natural RB too. Seldon never gonna make it at RB here IMO

With the way kids need to be treated in today's Football climate, the "Patriot Way' is just not going to work in college, in my opinion. I could be wrong, but I just don't think so.

Apparently AP just said on the radio that he doesn’t anticipate Tennessee to pursue WR in the portal. Interesting.
Says a lot about what the coaches think of Matthews and Staley.

It may be prudent to see how some of the incoming freshmen look in the spring before deciding if a depth piece is needed. Brazzel, Squirrel, and Matthews is a solid core group of guys. Staley plus the incoming freshmen may be all we need... but I have a REAL hard time thinking the coaches will turn their nose up at an All-American if one hits the portal. Even if we have 6 capable receivers that's still kind of thin if half of them have no experience.
