Agreed. We have been banged up at WR all year. Hard to believe we’ll go an entire season without any injury issues. Considering Heupel didn’t want to play Matthews much this year because of his inexperience, I can’t imagine he wants to have 3 true freshmen backups.

We need some bodies. I hope we pursue someone.
Matthews might have played more without the pre-fall injury. Pretty much Heupel alluded to. Squirrel had 30 catches for 481 yards as a true freshman. Heupel is not immune to playing a freshman WR, especially if they are an early enrollee.

Huge mistake if we don’t at least take 1 receiver from the portal.

Matthews
Brazzell
Squirrel
Staley

Yes I know we have some nice freshman coming in but to rely on all of them in the SEC doesn’t make any sense. Plus we have seen this year how banged up our WR core has been.

What’s going to happen if Squirrel is still injury prone and one of Brazzell or Matthews goes down? That’s razor thin in terms of production

Think this may be the same situation we had with the DB room last year. WR underperformed all year...time to clean the dead weight and bring in some talent and youth. Hopefully we don't need them during the playoffs

Heard on one of the pods that Vols encouraging the portal guys to still play in playoffs and they are eligible to do so

Yeah. What the hell does that Heupel guy know?

Squirrel is tough he has played and contributed the entire time he has been hurt. And his injury isn’t some major injury. He just needs rest. GBO

“Shanahan played but was hardly a stalwart. He gave good effort but was particularly poor in pass protection. We need to improve our O-Line one way or another.”

PFF grades:
Run: 53.7
Pass: 54.8

Hopefully he just needs a change of scenery.

Another reason the staff may not grab another WR from the portal.. They may plan on running a lot more 21 (two TE sets) next year. We should have a pretty good TE room also with the incoming freshmen.

Says a lot about what the coaches think of Matthews and Staley.

It may be prudent to see how some of the incoming freshmen look in the spring before deciding if a depth piece is needed. Brazzel, Squirrel, and Matthews is a solid core group of guys. Staley plus the incoming freshmen may be all we need... but I have a REAL hard time thinking the coaches will turn their nose up at an All-American if one hits the portal. Even if we have 6 capable receivers that's still kind of thin if half of them have no experience.
If a promising All American hits the portal, his agent's iPhone is about to go nuclear with the number of calls coming in. Plus, there is the price tag to think about. I think we are going to see less incoming proven players this year because we have to drop bags on Boo Carter and Jermod McCoy's porches before the season is even finished to get them to stay.
