Premiere League & World Soccer Thread

Something that worries me with the Chelsea situation that I haven’t heard anyone talking about yet, is that once they are sold we see the prospect of the Super League rear it’s ugly head again. The only reason it fell apart in the first place was that Roman listened to the fans and backed out, which then gave the City owners cover to do the same, and the whole idea unravelled from there.

Any potential buyer is going to go in with the mindset they are buying a top-10 club in the world, and will want it to stay that way. That’s no guarantee when they aren’t being backed by an oligarch with bottomless wealth who is willing to lose whatever money he has to in order to win. Being part of a Super League solves that problem, as it would lock them permanently into elite status. All the potential names being floated are American businessmen, who notoriously have either no knowledge or respect for the sanctity of the English football pyramid.

I’m afraid that next time around when all the big clubs minus City are American owned, things will go very differently, and the rest of the league is going to regret just letting the moment pass and not being more proactive in taking steps to insure it doesn’t happen again.

I was so depressed when the super league looked like a done deal. I was prepared to give up my fandom for Arsenal.

Depends fully on who its sold to for sure. Right now, the main American who most would say is the favorite at this point (which really doesn’t mean much until all the bids are in next week) is Todd Boehly’s consortium. He actually tried to buy Chelsea back in 2019 and has been an overall soccer fan for a while. He understands European football, as much as he can without growing up with it at least, and has said in the past that he is opposed to the Super League. I forget what he said exactly but it went along with the fans are backbone of the club and you can’t forget that. Something along those lines. Now, if it’s another American like god forbid the New York Jets owner or someone than yeah, big time worry about the Super League.

As a Chelsea fan, my hope is for Boehly. He comes from a background of sports ownership and the Dodgers have one of the highest payroll in the MLB, if not the highest. The group he’s part of there wants to win and they invest to win. I feel like he would have the same outlook at Chelsea.

Yeah, I forgot about my Foxes, because Vols Basketball, but it's going as I expected. Good win for your boys, mad

City dropping points, opening the door for Liverpool

Door is wide open. If Liverpool wins out they win the league. Now, will either of them completely win out? Probably not. They both have tough games left. Arsenal vs Liverpool this mid week should be a big game 👀

They don’t actually even have to win out. Draw with City, win the rest, plus stay ahead on damn difference would also do it. That said, I imagine both teams will drop a few other points along the way. Still a lot of the season left to play, but the title is now firmly Liverpool’s to lose.

Haha. Chelsea aren’t allowed to sell away tickets and are now asking for their FA Cup match at Middlesbrough this weekend to be played behind closed doors “for matters of sporting integrity”.

Just a terrible, terrible decision… on everyone’s part there. This is Middlesboroughs chance to have a world class club in their own home in the QF of the FA cup.. it’s the premier game of the season for them. Asking for that to play behind closed doors was never going to and shouldn’t ever happen. Really poor judgement. I haven’t seen a single Chelsea fan in the message boards that I’m apart of for Chelsea agree with that request. Universally hated. Rumor is that Bruce Buck was pushing the narrative the hardest and Petr Cech was fighting it the hardest. Could just be message board fodder but who knows.

All that aside, it’s really a shame that these so called sanctions are completely missing the mark and hurting the staff, players and fans the most. Are the sanctions hurting Roman right now? Sure, in more ways than just football. It’s the players and fans and all of the staff at the club that are suffering the most though. Not allowing operating expenses, travel expenses, and fans on game day for home or away does nothing to Roman. You can easily take control of accounts and everything else while still allowing the club to be able to function for sake of the staff, players and fans. The government seems set on making an example out of the people that had no say on who owned the club though. Real shame that they got it all wrong.

I agree, sanction Roman without affecting the day to day operations of the club. It makes no sense to punish the players and fans.

And then you have Newcastle...

Sounds like they were trying to create a talking point of how the ticket sales sanction is desperately needed to be changed overall and instead just put more egg on their face.

Aaaand Manchester United crash out of Champions League.

Also, benefica advances past Ajax. A bit surprising there too.
