President Donald Trump - J.D. Vance Administration

the gov't does not have to, the retailer does not have to tell me the wholesale price but why is it retailers will not tell people the markup?

Because it's meaningless. People would be like you and not understand ALL of the cost involved in selling that cand bar. And simply because it's none of your business, if they tell you they're telling their competitors.

A retailer's merchandising/pricing strategy is usually its biggest value driver. Why would you want to let competitors know?

It's damn near impossible given the complexity of vendor funding contracts to get an exact cost. It could vary from store to store, when it was sold, how it got delivered to the store, and the type of customer that bought it......

I understand stores have costs and if stores A and B are selling the same product they both buy from the same wholesaler, then they know what each others markup is.

My brother was a CAM for Pepsi, their pricing matrix is like Latin and Chinese mixed together. Makes no damn sense to anyone not involved.

What a mess it would he for companies that manufacture their own products.

Home Depot and Lowes sell pretty much the same stuff. Home Depot has 20% more stores but they are worth 3x as much.

Why?

HD has an operating profit of 14% vs 11%. Their merchandising strategy is far superior. They run their supply chain more efficiently, they run their retail stores more efficiently. Why should Lowes be able to figure out why they are doing it better....

Some manufacturers have all their dealers sell at a set price, anyone violates that price may lose carrying that product.

as far as markup on new vehicles, here's what I found:

Sticker price and invoice price when it comes to automobiles are illusions.

Normally the only person that sweats the sticker price being bargained down by the customer at the dealership is the salesman trying to get you to make the purchase because it eats away at his commission. The owner is making bank regardless.

if a bookstore pays 10 wholesale then I would have no problem paying a 100-150% markup. But if they pay $100 wholesale I would not like paying 100-150% markup.
Why do you care so much what the markup is? I don't really care what the margins are. I'm not a shareholder of theirs; I'm a customer.

If I think something is a good value for $5, I'll buy it. If an identical product comes available for cheaper than that, then I'll buy it. If both products are $5, but I like one more than the other, I'd buy the one I like more even if it was marked up more. Hell, I'd still buy the one I liked more even if there was a cheaper one that was marked up less.

What you are talking about kind of sounds like a game to deny the company making "too much" money or charging "too much" for a product, which I actually get. My father-in-law plays it all the time. He tries to guess or find out what their cost was and if in his judgment they marked it up "too much" he won't buy it, even if it is something he really wants and it is that same price everywhere.
