Pruitt wouldnt survive a 1-7 record.

He’s not getting fired after 2 years. If you want to indulge in fantasy and pretend Urban or some other big name coach would come here after the last guy lasted 24 games then be my guest, but the truth is Pruitt is here through the end of the 2020 season minimum.

How about this fantasy situation:
We don’t fire Pruitt.
We demote him to Def Coordinator with a 20 million pot to hire his def staff.
We hire back Lane as Head Coach.
Lane keeps Chaney as Off Coordinator with a 20 million pot to hire his off staff.
We hire Peyton as an offensive consultant like Bama does for $1.
We hire Al Wilson as a defensive consultant and Al finishes up getting his degree at UT.
(*** finishing the fantasy - the Dallas Cowboy cheerleaders moonlight on Saturday’s for us).

If you believe that judging a college football coach by the product that he puts on the field, rather than by your own hopes of improvement is "pessimism", then I would question your understanding of the very concept.
Wow, I think you single handedly defined what's wrong with some fans, you are actually detached from reality and would say or do anything to keep your justification for living in a negative world......you need help my friend.

I'd rather offer Saban $20 million a year and another $20 million for assistants. Even if he says no, you'd bankrupt the Bama AD. Win/win. My second call is Gundy, I'd tentatively offer to double his salary and then retract it at an airport meeting. Next serious offer is Sean Payton if he can assemble a good recruiting staff.

The money people wouldn't even pony up to hire a coach to buyout Kiffin's leftovers and forced them on Dooley......

People who think big money would pony to pay 10+ million to can Pruitt on top of Butch are clowns.

Also regardless of record, this staff can easily pull in a top 25 recruiting class. Also the best players this year are the guys who Pruitt recruited.
we have to give pruitt his 3 years. We cant keep hiring a new coach every 2 years- thats how we got here in the first place. Hold yr nose and give the man his 3 years . He has assembled a good recruiting staff and if we get enough good players the wins will come. Build it and they will come!

It doesn't look like they're coming now. The last time we fired a coach after 2 bad seasons, we hired Doug Dickey. That worked out okay. I understand that Pruitt probably won't get fired for another 5-7, maybe not even for 4-8. But if they keep him after 3-9 or worse, Vols need to transfer to the Sun Belt.

Should TN get 4-5 wins this year Pruitt is assured a job in 2020....anything less he’s probably gone..

The "money" people who are magically going to save UT football again. Those people have a lot of money because they aren't stupid and right now buying out another UT football coach would be a stupid move

wait a minute! there's no need to make sensible comments on this forum

He didn’t walk into a **** show, he walked into a better situation than Butch did.
I disagree.
Butch inherited a **** show. Had a legacy class. Let the players do whatever they wanted and left the place a bigger dumpster fire than when he arrived.
That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be better than we are. We definitely should be 3-0. CJP let BYU get away in Butch like fashion. Nothing can justify GSU. But that doesn’t change the situation any.
It’s either give power back to the wildcard.....which is very unlikely......or live with CJP

Given the last 10-12 years, and especially the last coaching search, I don't see how anyone has faith in us hiring an improvement. All firing Pruitt does is create another buy-out we would have to get out from under. At this point, might as well let him work out his contract and pray. Better chance of that working out than a UT coaching search.

It’s not just Pruitt.
There’s a whole list of assistants who would be getting buy outs too. Some people should really do the math. Where we are sucks but there’s no change coming anytime soon

Bloodthirsty fans also do nothing to help appeal to other coaches. Let's face it, this program is a train wreck and far from what we once were. Firing Pruitt won't fix it.

And then there's the Bama example that finally netted them Saban. I knew an old guy in Naples, now deceased, who played at Bama in the stone ages. He was dead set on them riding it out with Shula. Two years later he was like, 'Mike who?'

The Bama example means spending money. Saban didn't come cheap. I've lost any faith that we're willing to pay top dollar, especially if we're looking at all of those buy outs. It's not that your theory isn't sound for other programs, but UT has done everything possible in recent years to disprove it.

The program won't survive a 2-10 or a 1-11.
If either of those happen TN should shutter the football program for awhile until admin can get reengaged and back on board with wanting a WINNER!!!!! Right now they don’t give two s**** it’s sad when they can’t get a guy like Meyer or Saban or hell even Peterson...a coach of their caliber would have turned this team into NC contenders after 2 years. Fulmer was the best we had and it got screwed up. Say he never got fired after 2008; would he have retired on his own in a couple more years? Where would we be sitting now if he had stayed past 2009???

So you think we should have given Dooley and Butch a couple more years? No, both of them should have been canned a year earlier. What happens when you keep a "dud" like Dooley, Butch, and now Pruitt is the roster is depleted of quality players.

The problem is not firing the coach too soon, but hiring mediocre coaches in the first place. You think a coach at Bama, Auburn or Florida would be retained after a 2-12 season in his second year?
