When we were winning in the 90s. LSU sucked, Bama sucked, auburn sucked, MSU won the west one year. There were only two good teams year in and year out (Florida and Tennessee) There is only so much room for good teams in our conference. Bama, LSU, Arkansas, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Tennessee all can't be good at the same time. At best 3 can be top 10 teams.
I don't give a rip anymore about rooting for all conference teams. I hate Bama. I don't mind Auburn. I hate Florida. I don't mind LSU. I hate Vandy. I don't mind A&M. I'll root for who I don't mind but I will never pull for the likes of Bama and Florida. Ever.
Anyone that thinks a strong SEC helps UT hasn't been paying attention. UT has had 3 losing seasons out of the last 4. Yeah, Bama, LSU, UGA, etc. being good has really helped UT. What a dumb*ss statement. As other posters have pointed out, there is only so much room for good teams in a conference and UT being down and in a good conference has done nothing for them. What an absurd position.
With that said, go Vols and to hell with everyone else.
This is pure ignorance. Just because we're down while the conference is strong doesn't mean "we're down because the conference is strong". Your conference makes you look good. It helps with recruiting to say "hey come here, play in the SEC". You always want your team to appear stronger, that can be achieved by playing stronger teams.
Who is the better team? A team that goes 6-6 in the Big East, or a team that goes 6-6 in the SEC? The SEC team will always appear better because of the success of the conference.
The flawed thinking is this: too many UT fans want all or nothing. They seem to feel if we're not winning the NC we're not succeeding. That is ignorant. We are succeeding when we beat or hang with the best teams out there. That is what helps with recruiting. If we beat Bama this year, we look that much better because of what Bama did to Michigan. Why would you want Bama (and the rest of the conference) to be a push over?
The people that root against the SEC are basically saying "I wish we played in the Big East so we could win more".
That is sad and I have way too much pride in UT to wish for something like that. Sad and embarrassing.
I root for the SEC in every OOC game. Mostly because I lived in Big 10 Country for a few years, and there's nothing that gets under their skin more than going around saying how much better football is in the South. Their frustration is funny.
