QB competition..

Also read that Butch put Ferguson in to do first team reps just to see what he can do.

I'm not "anti" Ferguson, I just haven't seen the kid play and nobody else has either so the rally behind him has me puzzled honestly. It's like blind faith. I have seen Dobbs play and not only is he not afraid to run when nobody is open but he's got a great arm.
Maybe Ferguson will get a shot at playing and we'll see how he handles it. Hopefully it doesn't turn out like Peterman but it really could.

Disagree with your first statement. Each QB from day one has been given approximately, if not exactly 25% of the reps with the first team prior to the last 2-3 practices. Heard coach Jake discuss it and say how difficult it was to do. It's been an open competition.

Ferguson, through his performance, has steadily earned more reps with Worley as those 2 have begun to separate themselves from the other 2. I don't think Butch just randomly gave Ferguson reps with the 1s.... he's earned them by all accounts from the writers, former players and observers who have written and commented on what they've seen. I'm sure that had Dobbs or Peterman performed to the level of Ferguson at this point that they would be splitting team 1 reps with Worley.

This is starting to sound like the quarterback situation going into the 1971 season. Tennessee started out with Chip Howard and by halfway through that season Dennis Chadwick became the quarterback. I just hope the 2014 season isn't just one big quarterback tryout!

I hope he is better than Jeff was. I watched the 1981 UT-UGA game and Jeff was horrible(He was bad against Wichita State during homecoming in 1981 also).

See my post on CONTEXT. And the fact that his offer list was the most impressive of all our QBs makes me want to cry in my mashed potatoes.

Maybe you should cut starches. :ermm:

Jeff came in relief of Streater in that huge Notre Dame victory of 1980...was it? The Hubert Simpson game.

We were hanging on for dear life...lol!

I was on the very back row of the upper deck in section JJ for the Wichita State game...student section back then. We were so high up that a flock of Canadian Geese flew below us... Yes, Jeff was terrible that day! We were lucky to win.

Hubert beat the Irish to a pulp. Jeff just had to manage the game after JS got hurt. I hope Dobbs can become dangerous like Jimmy Streeter was. That reminds me that Jeff's worst game was against Ole Miss the week after the 79 Notre Dame game. Tennessee lost that game 45-20. Here's that Ole Miss game.

Yes! Now that I ponder, I think that was 1979. Steve Alatore (sp?) got into that mix somewhere. It runs together. Streeter was da man!

Dobbs may be our guy. I really thought he would be the one who stepped up and took the job this spring.

Alatorre was way down the list in 1979. Steve became the qb for Tennessee during the USC game in 1980. Then Steve became qb again after Alan Cockrell ripped his knee up during the first possession in the 1981 Auburn game(a 10-7 win).

Yes Dave, you got a good memory. I cried when Cockrell went down.

Didn't someone throw a metal folding chair at him?

He was a great baseball player who stayed in the minors for over a decade.

Back on Jeff O, I remember the students chanting his name with a dirty word inserted into the middle O-#&*$-ski!

:lolabove: I never knew that folks called JO that. When a player is doing poorly fans can be particularly brutal.

If it's close CBJ may just start Ferguson just because he's never played SEC ball and to support fan imagination

He made it to the MLB level. He was on the Colorado Rockies in 1996. Became the Rockies hitting coach in 2006. He was also the Mariners hitting coach from 2008-2010. Its a shame he left after his junior year for the MLB draft. He was the first UT quarterback I saw play at Neyland.

@Vol_Football: Bajakian: we are making too many mistakes and missing too many open receivers. It would be ideal to have a clear cut starter at QB

From Houston Kress at TSR....

Quarterbacks in Team Period: Senior Justin Worley took the reps at first team quarterback tonight in the team portion of practice and Riley Ferguson took the work with the second team. Each quarterback only got one drive. Worley and the rest of the first team picked up a first down in three plays and ‘won’ their portion against the defense. Riley and the second team had to pick up two first downs before being declared the winners of their round. Ferguson hit freshman tight end Daniel Helm over the middle for a 18 yard pickup on second down and 2, and then Jonathan Johnson took an end around 20 yards down the left sideline before coach Jones ended the period with the offense winning both sets.

After today's practice

telling everyone that fergy and worley are struggling and the reporters have their favorites as well

I have been to a few practices both last season as well as this season. I said this last year and I am saying it again now, Ferguson is the best quarterback. His arm strength, accuracy, and mechanics are not matched by any of the other quarterbacks. He appears to be able to process the speed of the game and has a solid grasp of the offense. He is a play maker with both his arm and legs. The only item Ferguson lacks is game experience. If Ferguson had gotten to play last season, like Worley and Dobbs, this thread (conversation) would not be happening as Ferguson would be the clear Number One quarterback.

For what it is worth, I rank them as follows:

1) Ferguson
2) Worley
3) The rest

I will also say this, Dobbs is one of the best athletes on the team and should be on the field, just not at the quarterback position. I think Butch needs to have a long chat with Dobbs about changing positions once spring practice is over.

The above is just my opinion based on what I have seen.

Move Dobbs to first base.

Nice insight, but I think it is safe to say that the Vols don't have Peyton Manning on the roster or even a Eric Ainge for that matter. Maybe, they do have a couple of Matt Simms though.

Y'all are crazy if you think they're going to move Dobbs to another position.

I agree. He may not be ready now, but in time he could develop into a good QB. But, I would most definitely redshirt him this season. He could be a completely different player by his third or fourth year in the system.

You can't red shirt someone that's already played a down in a game. Dobb's red shirt got burned when Worley and Peterman broke their thumbs. Dobbs will be in school for 5 years though so he could play his 5th year if the coach allowed it. That doesn't matter much though as we're nowhere near the point of eliminating any of the 4 QB's. The decision will unlikely be made even after the O&W game.

I feel this is incorrect.

His first toss to Josh Smith was well placed but Smith juggled it just enough to allow the defender to break up the pass."
Someone needs to tell Joshie if he wants any chance at playing time, he better catch everything he - as much as - touches.

Otherwise, bench this kid. :mf_surrender:
