Ramar Smith

Chism plays his best when playing the best talent in the country. He was impressive against Greg Oden when they matched up. He easily outplayed 5* C Jason Bennett when they matched up. He has played Brandon Wright a handful of times and has more than held his own, etc. Jerry Meyer of Rivals.com thinks Chism could be a 5* player rather than the 4* ranking he recieved.

I think Chism is a much better rebounder than Wingate is right now. He would have led our team in rebounds this year. He is more skilled offensively right now than Major Wingate is. He has range on his jumper, he can step out and knock down the three, Meyer says he is potentially a "dominant" scorer with his back to the basket. He is a good passer, has a good feel for the game, etc. He will need to work on his conditioning a little, IMO.

I loved watching him defend Thaddeus Young out on the perimeter when they matched up. It was extremely impressive. Young is considered and elite SF at the next level, but in the game that I personally saw, Chism had such good lateral movement defensively that Young was unable to ever break him down and take him to the rim off the dribble. I was so impressed with how well Chism moved when having to guard an elite SF out on the perimeter. In their first matchup that I saw, he showed a lot of offensive ability. He knocked down a three, he drove to the rim, he showed good low post moves and nice touch around the basket, played under control, etc. In their latest matchup about a week ago, both Young and Chism both struggled from the floor, both going 5-15, but Chism did grab 18 rebounds.

I think Chism is underrated even though several people have him as a Top 50 prospect. I think he is a Top 30 guy and should be getting serious consideration as a 5* prospect.

I was happy with what Wingate showed his last two games, but whether Chism starts or not, he will play a LOT of minutes, I guarantee you that.

Ya'll are getting no where with the Chism and Wingate thing..

That was the point I was trying to get across above. Let it play out & let the best big man win. :peace2:

Not if Wingate plays the way he did this year

If Wingate plays next year the way he played in the NCAA tournament he will be starting without doubt.

Yeah, but we don't know if he can play like that for more than a couple games and we don't know that even if he is playing like that if he is better than Chism.

I think we could start 3 true freshmen next year, if we get Smith of course.

Think about how that lineup matches up with Pearl's style? I don't think he will Chism and Wingate on the floor at the same time to much. He will try to minimize that type of lineup. Pressing will be difficult with Chism and Wingate on the floor at the same time. Chism moves very well for a player his size, but in a pressing situation he would not be effective. That just my view.

I think the whole thing with Wingate is, he needs help. He can play the game, but he needs someone to help carry the load on the inside. He is not a great shooter and pretty short on defensive skills. He can't jump. He plays about like a 6'6" player. Now don't go jumping on me, I still like the guy and he should be in the lineup, he just needs a little help and from what I see coming, he will have the scoring help inside that will make him a better player.

I still hold the opinion that he could be a beast coming off of the bench.
at what point did you have that opinion? You were telling me he'd blow away major the whole thread.

Yeah, there genius. I'm talking about Wingate. The guy above me was talking about him so I was inferring to his statement. Wingate would be a beast off of the bench.

I am impressed with the amount of information coming out of this thread, it is obvious the Volnation posters not only post their opinions but back it up with research.

Summarizing what I have seen, our recruiting has stepped up a notch. With as much exposure as we have received over the past year and the success of this rag tag team, recruits are starting to notice us.

Spoke with Freak today and he said yesterday was the one year anniversary of Pearl meeting the UT bball team..what an amazing year.

Keep it up guys.

Tim Crowell.

Actually from Scouthoops.com we are recruiting this juco guard.

The Vols are courting four guards in hopes of bolstering the backcourt next season and finding an adequate replacement for point guard C.J. Watson.

UT has its eyes on a 6-2 Michael Taylor from Chippola Junior College in Marietta, Fla. Taylor is from Milwaukee and likely would have signed with Pearl at Wisconsin-Milwaukee had he had the grades.

If Smith goes to Arkansas, I'd think we would look into other JC players. Failing there, we just pocket the grant for next year.

I can't remember which article it was I read but it stated we can not assume we have extra schlorships because of the deal with kids graduating or leaving early we may lose them if we don't use them. :bad:

You're talking about the APR, which is tied to graduation rate. We would lose scholarships if we don't meet certain graduation benchmarks. There's no way to avoid those penalties if you miss the numbers. We would lose scholarships under that scenario regardless of what we do.

I think we will take Jarvis Hill if Smith ends up at Arkansas. I don't think we have a real strong interest in digging into the JUCOs right now.

With Kelvin Sampson taking the Indiana job, wonder if any of the great class he has recruited at OU will ask for their release and reopen their recruitment. I guarantee we could use one of those guys.

Scott Reynolds in particular.
