Randall Cobb

You want the real playmaker on that team - WR/DB/P/K/KOS/RB Sam Thompson. He's the fastest high school kid I've seen in a while.

Hate to say it but he's like a Fred McGriff/Wes Welker kind of guy thats just makes plays.

I was lucky enough to see him play with and without pads...he is the real deal. UT could bulk him up a bit and he'd be nasty out there.

McGriff was tough on the gridiron.

Rivals has him running a 4.4 sec forty. That's pretty quick. At 6ft. 180lbs he could possibly be recruited as a DB. I doubt UT would look at him as a WR with the depth they have already.

unfortunately i dont believe UT is really recruiting him...

he'll probably be one more guy that 'could have' made an impact.

i could see him at db for certain, but he is faster on the field than 4.4. not the first time that rivals wasnt completely accurate...

catch a couple alcoa games this year, he does everything. i literally mean that. everything.

wouldn't we want a guy that is so versatile for a team that repeats yearly as state champs?

It sounds to me like it would definitely be worth the coaches time to check this kid out. Look at Dennis Rogan. He was great in high school, but nobody really thought he would make an impact his freshmen year at UT and be competing for the starting CB job as a true sophomore. This kid is really special. I am glad they gave him a chance, that is for sure.

Some of these kids are as good as your 5 star recruits but fly under the radar because they can't afford to go to these high profile camps or they play for small schools and just don't get the exposure.

I'd really love to see Sam in Orange and White. If the coaches watch him play, the'll likey give him a shot. And maybe they have, but they've done nothing significant as far as I know - as far as really recruiting him. But I am 100% certain that I don't want to see him trucking across Neyland in any other colors...

here he is #3

Thanks for the link, Tennisguy. UK pulled off a recruiting coup, also mentioned in your article. Mossakowski also listed Texas and Auburn as choices, but chose Kentucky. :)

Meanwhile, quarterback Ryan Mossakowski of Centennial High School in Frisco, Texas, committed to the Wildcats. The 6-foot-4, 201-pound Mossakowski told the Dallas Morning News that he chose Kentucky over Texas A&M and Alabama.

Mossakowski told the newspaper that Kentucky's passing attack and its recent history of placing quarterbacks in the NFL influenced his decision.

Rivals.com ranks Mossakowski as a four-star prospect and has him No. 2 nationally on a list of the strongest QB arms in the Class of 2009.

Well, hey, man. UK is kind of short at the QB position after Mr. Pulley got himself booted and Mr. Fidler got into trouble.
Oh, I'm not trying to put down KY (in this instance). I'm just saying that to all of the people who think that Randall Cobb is just some scrub that isn't even worthy of setting foot on UT's campus, muchless worthy of a scholarship.

I would loved to have had Cobb. I think he is a great athlete. However, he had his chance. It wasn't like he was not offered by UT. They just offered him so late, and KY offered so early. I think he was kind of peeved with UT so when the offer came around he said thanks but no thanks.

.

I saw this yesterday. Looks like you guys got a good one here. Apparently the kid has a cannon for an arm.

I have played against Randall Cobb four times and he was a great player that Tennessee really could use. He is alot like a Gerald Jones type of player that he could throw the ball way down field or take off on a 50 yard run. I was shocked to find out that Tennessee was recruiting him atleast as a receiver or defensive back.

Fact is its nothing more than sour grapes. For those players that want to be Vols they will be (see Dennis Rogan) for those that don't there are plenty of excuses for both Cobb and his Uncle. That is exactly the type of player UT doesn't need.

Cobb good luck at UK and enjoy losing to UT for the next 4 years.

Fall camp just started Tuesday and the players aren't in full pads yet, so it's still early for the coaches to make any long-term projections about any of the freshmen, but Cobb has opened eyes. Earlier this summer, Phillips compared Cobb's talent level to former Wildcats star Keenan Burton and said after Kentucky's first practice that Cobb might be the most impressive rookie he's seen at UK.

Cobb's high school coach, Gary Rankin, said that Cobb displayed the same kind of attitude during a prep career that saw him win four consecutive state titles and earn Class AA Mr. Football honors in Tennessee.

“He'll jump right in and won't gripe and complain,” Rankin said. “He's such a team guy; never a ‘me' guy. He could have had some of the most gaudy stats ever playing for us, but he understood that we needed to balance things out for the best of the team. I thought he was the best football player in the state of Tennessee last year.”

If his own coach says he was the best player in the state, then it must be true.

I agree. I just thought you guys might find this interesting. You may have let a really good player get away from you. Especially since he was truly in your own backyard.

Cutcliffe didn't think he was enough of a traditional QB to even waste time with. By the time Clawson got a chance to get here to recruit him, he had already been turned around by Ky.

I strongly suspect that if Clawson had been there from the beginning he would now be wearing orange. Reports out of Lexington is that this kid is just way too talented to keep off the field. If the incoming freshman WR's were not so good he would be starting at that position from day one. As a result he is now @ quarterback and challenging Hartline for the starting position. Apparently he is that good. Of course you are guys are loaded with talent so it really doesn't matter. One just hates to loose this kind of talent that is so close to home.

Cutcliffe recruited several dual threat QBs during his brief second stint with the Vols.

He was a good high school player but not great by any stretch. Could he have played at UT? yes in 2 or 3 years.

What else is a UK Coach going to say... The best in Tennessee? NOT EVEN CLOSE and if Joker thinks so then UK football is in sad hands.

He won't be the second version of Chris Lofton. Lofton never trahed his home state school. He was class throughout his career about that situation. Cobb is running his mouth and hasn't done anything yet. And oh yeah, UK put him at WR. I thought they were giving him a chance at QB? oh well.

He is taking taking snaps 90% of practice.

He will be a punt returner and see some time at WR. But the staff is mainly planning on using him at QB.
