by the way, here is my top 5, and i'm looking at overall record as sec head coaches.
1) urban meyer. What he's done so far is amazing by any standards. 2 bcs and 2 sec titles. See my comments above.
2) nick saban. See my comments above.
3) les miles. I;m going to get hell for this, but i'm sticking with it. He won a national title with saban's players, but he still won.
4) houston nutt - led arkansas to winning seasons and an sec title appearance. Ressurected (somewhat) a struggling ole miss program.
5) steve spurrier. I'm, including his florida record here as well. He's faded somewhat, but has shown signs of brilliance lately.
Receiving votes:
Mark richt, kiffin, chizik
reason i left kiffin and chizik off my list is because they haven't coached but one year. Kiffin did an outstanding job, imo, and will prove to be on this list shortly. It's hard to judge them now because they only coached 12 games thus far.
1) meyer.
Here we go again... OK... urbie won his first NC with Zook's players. After that.. in the state of florida.. I could build on that. Saban has done waaaay more than urbie on a comparative basis to include recruiting. (Not to mention that he has had fewer guys in jail)
As for the hypeman trophy, I think you will find that few in the entire state of Tennessee gives a rat's a$$ about it since the great screwjob. It's about as meaningful as the Nobel Peace Prize or American idol.
It still baffles me that anyone can believe this. He had a losing record at Orgeon. He has a losing record at Kentucky. He is 16-40 in 7 years in the SEC. He has gone .500 in the conference exactly once. He has finished better than 5th in the division exactly twice.
Kentucky's recent "success" comes from a combination of adding a 12th game against Eastern, dropping powerhouse Indiana, and the fact that Louisville stinks again.
Really? I'm having a hard time finding a worse one.
Saban also inherited some good players as well. I'm not saying Saban doesn't deserve to be first, just curious as to everyone's thoughts and why... just trying to encourage some thought out discussions. Here we go again... Leak was the leader of that team, and a surprising leader. He was always a soft spoken kid with tremendous talent. Urban made him take the reigns his senior year and forced him to come out of his shell. He did a hell of a job, IMO.Was he really the leader of that '06 team?
I don't know, serious question for the Gator on here.
And my fear is that many Gator fans will expect this and eventually drive Meyer away. It happened with Spurrier. I think with any fan base in this age, though, that when you win it's expected from here on out.
Saban won at Michigan State (and beat the Gators in what was then called the Citrus bowl). He went to LSU and resurrected that program (think of what they were in the 90's) and won big there. After a somewhat unsuccessful stint with the 'Phins, he took over at Bama and won. He will win a BCS title there, it's only a matter of time...and could very well be this year. For the record, I have a hard time ranking anybody above a guy who has won 2 out of the last 3 national championships and who may be on his way to a 3rd in his 5th year on the job.

That has yet to be determined. If he can win (and I know he will, just not to this extent) Post Tebow, then he won't be forever tied to one player.Apparently urbie doesn't think so or he'd be smart and head for South Bend... If I were in his shoes I certainly would. He'll be a legend on his own there.. in gainesburg he will always be tied to tebow

You can't take away what Tebow did either. You guys would have beaten us if it wasn't for that 4th down conversion.
I'll admit I'm biased and agree with you. I rank Meyer at the 1 spot. Kinda makes you wonder "what if" Saban stayed at LSU... Would he have had this kind of success that Meyer has? Would he have won multiple BCS titles?I know what Saban has done. If he does it again, there's a pretty good argument. If the world stopped today, though, how do you rank him above Meyer?
They both have done a great job thus far, someone mentioned Urban landing in " perfect storm " so to speak and I can see that, a lot of thing have to go your way to be successful.
It's not like Nick is at Miss. St and has them on the brink of a SEC title, it's Alabama. His reputation and the schools reputation will bring success. Not like any of this is surprising.
Ok, who's on your list?

To be honest with you... I don't remember that
Jerod Mayo had a pick 6 called back because of a supposed roughing the passer penalty, I think it was J.T. Mapu, not sure, anyway, looked as though a Florida lineman pushed him into the QB, Mapu had his hands up the whole time. It negated the pick 6, Florida drove down the field and got a field goal, the rest is history.
