Maybe I hangout in the football recruiting forum too much but just because he has an offer doesn't make it committable. CCM may have offered the kid a scholarship on the conditions of "if a spot opens"

Also, I take everything Quinn says with not just a grain of salt but the whole shaker. He just doesn't seem to be in the loop for insider information.

Everyone wants to freak out, let them...I'll let things play out and see what the roster looks like come July.

I don't think it's people freaking out. I think it's more that people are not satisfied with some of the results that they are seeing. Bringing in this recruit and giving him any offer what-so-ever either it being on a contingency of someone leaving or not isn't going to make most fans happy. CCM's popularity is dwindling away and moves like this just speeds up the process.

There's definitely some overreacting going on...If he doesn't end up coming here what does it matter? And if he does come here, why crucify Martin before the guy has played a game. By all accounts he's unimpressive, but he's a 7 footer, and if stokes leaves size is something we are lacking. Heck even if stokes stays we are lacking size. We also don't know what's going on with the roster, I've heard rumors about Yemi leaving (I don't believe them), but say he leaves, Stokes goes pro and Maymon isn't 100%, then what?

There's just a lot of pieces that haven't been decided in all this that really could change in my mind how this guy coming here could be perceived...until the smoke clears and everything settles I'm reserving judgment.

I will definitely give you some props. You support your man to the very end. And there is nothing wrong with that at all. It's actually quite admirable.

The questions that you are asking about what ifs on why it may be logical on bringing this guy in.....Stokes goes pro and Maymon isn't 100% healthy....then what....? Well, then what in my book will be for Hart to get the list out cause it will get ugly really quick. IMO we don't dance without Stokes, Maymon, and McRae. So, in short, I will support the Vols and the players out on the court, but if we get into another year of what ifs, then I will be ready to support another coach.

Edit: I will say though that if this guy is brought in here to trade for Yemi, then I'm ok with that. He may not ever be SEC calibre, but Yemi isn't and IMO will never be either. I actually like Yemi, but if he goes, then we won't lose much by replacing him with a guy that can't score or rebound.

Right, but Hart obviously isn't going to make a move before next season, even if McRae and Stokes leave...Martin will still be coaching next years team. So Martin has to put a team out there, and if those what ifs happen he's badly going to need some bigs...once again I'm not supporting this guy coming in just playing devils advocate and will wait til the smoke clears and everything settles before I make my judgment on the situation.

If this guy is brought in yet stokes returns along with McRae I'll criticize this move for Martin's entire tenure...if the guy is brought in and stokes leaves and yemi transfers, well then it probably is a move he had to make.

I will say the biggest head scratcher of this whole deal to me is why not Black, Davis or another transfer big (think there's one from purdue)...these guys are experienced, proven players and have one year of eligibility and can play immediately. If this move is because of Stokes leaving, add a guy who can hopefully come close to matching Stokes production and not a raw project...next year is supposed to be the year, if Stokes leaves it hurts, but do your es to replace him, there are options. We have to look pretty appealing to a transfer big if Stokes leaves, immediate playing time (probably immediate starter), a pre season top 25 team, and a team with other veterans...at least try for a few of those guys before settling on a guy like Ndiaye...I'm fairly confident he will still be available in a month.

I don't think you can draw in a big fish available until Stokes actually makes a move. We can't really promise playing/starting to a player when Stokes is projected mid second to undrafted and he hasn't jumped ship. Black and the rest of the best will want as much as a 100% guaranteed as possible situation. Our situation will be completely cleared up by the first of next week, but that could be too late to get in on a decent big fish.

Right, I agree about they'll wanna know what stokes is doing. However, I think most schools these guys are considering have some players probably contemplating the draft...in fact I don't think any of those transfers have even started taking any visits, I know Black hasn't. So I'd like to see us wait til stokes makes a decision, if he's leaving then pursue one of these better bigs who could immediately fill in...then if we can't land one of them, look for a guy like Ndiaye. And that very well may be what they're doing, the offer Ndiaye has may not be committable at this point.

Wow, that would be something from way out of left field.

You just hope that we don't get too far down the list by the time we know something. Black's name is the biggest one out there and he will have guaranteed starting position offers to dozens of schools. He will only get to visit a certain amount, so not getting in early may hurt us. He's a smart man though. He knows when the NBA deadline is, so he won't make any moves until he sees all "potential" offers. He has already said that he wants to find the absolute best situation for him. To me that says that he wants to find a coach that can potentially put him in the NBA. He wasn't getting there under Pastner.

Yeah, I would be shocked if Yemi left. He would have to sit a year and be available to play his Senior year somewhere.

At UT, he will get 10 minutes a game next year and potentially start his Senior year here (only because there may be nobody better).

If he could redshirt then have 2 years remaining he may actually be a good get for someone...I've hoped we could get him a redshirt year in, but it's looking unlikely.

No. Any athletically-related aid would count towards the team limit though, but doesn't prevent a kid from walking on after taking an official visit.

So Jarnell Stokes could've walked on at Memphis last year for half the year and played and been on scholarship the rest of his time there....because everyone was under the impression he couldn't?

Yemi is going into his Junior year. If he transfer, he will have to sit out a year and lose a year of eligible playing time leaving only one year left to play. Regardless of using a redshirt, he will only have one more year to play if he transfers to another school.

I don't know the specifics of it, but I would assume so.

Wrong. Stokes would not have been eligible to play at Memphis because they did not have a scholarship available. He would have to sit until the next year. If he practiced with the team, then he would lose a year of eligibility. Quote below:

Stokes, whom Rivals.com rated the No. 11 overall prospect nationally when Stokes was still part of the Class of 2012, can play this season for a school that has an athletic scholarship available once he’s attending classes and is approved by the NCAA Clearinghouse.

Memphis, however, does not have an athletic scholarship. Stokes could practice with the Tigers this spring if he enrolls in January but wouldn’t be eligible to play until the fall of 2012.
