KNOXVILLE For the second year in a row, Tennessee's football team has struck out with the state's top prospect.
Brandon Warren, a tight end/defensive end from Alcoa High School, announced last night that he would sign with Florida State.
A year ago, Goodpasture's Patrick Turner spurned Tennessee in favor of Southern Cal.
In Warren's case, he said playing for Bobby Bowden was a huge factor in his decision.
"I get a chance to play for probably the greatest coach in college football history," Warren said. "Being coached by him and playing for Florida State is all I've ever wanted to do."
Even though Warren lives less than 20 minutes from UT's campus, he grew up following the Seminoles. He committed to Florida State in the summer, but decided to take a second look at Tennessee following his senior year of high school.
The 6-foot-2, 235-pound Warren took official visits to Florida State two weekends ago and to Tennessee last weekend.
In the end, he decided to stick with the Seminoles and made his announcement last night on the Hound Dogs Locker Room Signing Day Show.
He admitted that family members preferred to see him stay closer to home and play for the Vols.
"That was hard," Warren said. "It was tough, man. It's hard to see your mom cry."
Warren is rated by Rivals.com as the No. 2 weak side defensive end prospect in the country.
"My guidance counselor pointed this out to me," Warren said. "I always put other people before me with stuff. This was a situation where I had to put myself first. I had to be happy, and I think I'll be most happy at Florida State."
Warrens decision to sign with the Seminoles is likely to help the Vols with tight end Michael Goggans of Alexander City, Ala. Goggans had earlier committed to UT, but also took visits to Alabama and Auburn.
National Signing Day is tomorrow, and the Vols have 24 commitments. Among the players theyre still waiting on are defensive tackle Aleric Mullins of Wendell, N.C., safety Greg Davis of Blue Ridge, Va., and linebackers Kelvin Sheppard and Perry Riley of Stone Mountain, Ga.
Sheppard and Riley, high school teammates, had earlier committed to LSU.
Defensive tackle Adam Patterson of Columbia, S.C., cut the Vols yesterday, while receiver Tim Hawthorne of Homewood, Ala., chose Auburn.
