Recruiting Football Talk VII

USC is a better job than Oklahoma but everyone said Riley didn’t want the SEC smoke. So the same must apply to Lanning.

For the record I agree. Oregon seems like a dream job.
like many places, walking into a hs with 'USC' on the lapel doesnt make kids ohh and ahh, like it did in Carroll days.

from my reading, they, much like miami just can't get it headed in the right direction. off campus stadium, unrealistic academics, an unreal endowment - but a lot of disinterest, ageing infrastructure...

that said, with a good qb, and some athletes... they will win 11 games. absolutely sick recruiting ground. should never win less than 8 games.

I was telling my wife last night about the sad news I heard on the radio while driving home. Apparently a pretty famous actress killer herself. My wife asked me who it was and I could not remember the full name but thought her first name was Reese. She gasped, Oh No.!! Witherspoon!!???
I said no, apparently she did it with her knife
fotunately @Weezer is posting again. so had this handy.IMG_4836.gif

And this is fine. I have zero issue with 8-4, 9-3, 11-1(12-0), 10-2, cycle and rinse patters where we have a shot at a NC every 3-4 years and are always in the conversation in the rebuild years.

💯

You got it!

That’s what Tennessee is when it’s stable and I’m good with it too. And I’m optimistic Heupel has gotten us there. The Nico era will tell the tale.

I’m excited to watch!

I'm sure that's what everybody thought before Banks was hired. What happened? We got turned down by all the hot manes and "experienced" coaches.
how much of that $1.6 can we put toward loyalty and happiness in job?

what happens if we do fahr banks, we lose a few prospects..
1- those guys were needed for depth
2- we could hire Sal Sunseri
3- we could hire Justin Wilcox, here today, gone tomorrow.

Then we're right back to square one.

Listen, I'm no better than anyone else. I was just as frustrated by their performance Sat as the necks guy, hell, Im pretty sure I was done also. But truth is, continuity in staff merits a lot of value. We hear it time and again from HS kids.

Texas A&M fired Kevin Sumlin because he couldn't win the big games then hire Jumbo ...lol Jumbo finished with close to same winning pct..at A&M as Sumlin and made twice the money..

Jumbo was fools gold anyway..if not for Jameis Winston he wouldn't have won crap at FSU...saying that ..I think A&M goes after another Mid-Major coach who has overachieved at the job they have now..

I don't have a particular article to pinpoint, but I've definitely heard it was a guaranteed contract and TAMU is on the hook for the full amount. They owe him a lump sum of some percentage of his contract, then he'll get paid in installments for x number of years. The numbers are not offset by him taking another job.
I think its $20-30mil in 30 days and the rest over 8 years, guaranteed.

Nah. They have gold lined pockets. This aggressive move was to posture for a big name. Problem is when you cut a coaches throat, as they've shown a proclivity to do, you spoil the meat.

No plan, just money. They'll get a mercenary.

This certainly supports the genius of Heup but… man… that absolute gulf between Ga/Bama talent and the rest is so disheartening. How do you compete?
JMO - TL;dr

Money, innovation, talented coaching staffs, patience, competence in AD/university leadership. Add in breaking the cycle of corruption in B-Ham if really committed to excellence long term, which also ties into the last factor.

I lack the patience, but I am a fan.

My opinion of conditions on the ground: the roster over the three seasons is not an every year compete for the SECCG type roster. Not there yet. Could be with the listed factors above being done well IMO. Money - probably sufficient. Innovation - yes on O, no on D. Innovation includes player development in my book. Talented coaching staff with an elite level upside - maybe half are. Patience - yes, I believe the current powers in charge will be patient within reason. They are highly competent - not a factor anymore.

The past powers at UT since Joe Johnson and Doug Dickey retired were not competent or patient enough. They could have turned Fulmer's career around by being more competent and authoritative in their dealings with him. He burned too many bridges rising to the top as well as afterwards because he did not have have competent people leading and managing him as his ego took off. The same thing happened to Majors, just in a different way. When success leads to excess in personality and privilege, the fall is coming every single time.

The lesson is to break this cycle with Heup and the program as it has with Voltello and CRB. If either left and they will at some point, the programs are in great shape to compete at the highest level. That is all we can ask as fans. That needs to happen in football, but is much, much harder to achieve once it has fallen to the depths we were in recently. Parents and top players have to trust that it has arrived before they invest into UT with the talent.

Is Dobbs playing his way into the starting role at Minnesota? If they bench him, someone will take him as the starter. Hate that it took 6 years for the clowns to open their eyes.
All the pomp and circumstance around the NFL's dog and pony show.

How do you accurately test a persons ability to process information in real time? How they react to adversity? How they play when the lights come on?

EQ is a real thing. Id argue they cant. And get it wrong as often as they get it right.

Will Levis.

My view is Tennessee will never be in that top 2-3, especially not in the expanded SEC. Not enough instate talent and they lack the money of Texas, Texas A&M, etc.

But when the program is stable, they should be able to get somewhere between Auburn and LSU on this list, both of whom played for national titles in this stretch.

Of course, if the noisiest elements of the fanbase can’t handle 8-4 seasons, then we will perpetually languish in the middle to bottom third of this list.
Im not sure why people draw lines around the state and think that's where our talent pool ends. We are dead center of all the best talent in America We are a day drive to 70% of the nation. There is 0 reason we can't compete to be in the top3 of the SEC every year, imo.

Even if we do that, there will be some 6-6, 7-5 seasons sprinkled in here and there. 8-4, 9-3 is an incredible overall average. We should be knocking on the door of 10+ wins every year from '25 on out, if Heupel stays and keeps the same trajectory he's shown since he got here.

Rule of thumb is to keep your in state talent at home..by all means necessary...can't let the Tee Higgins of the state leave no matter what...then invade surrounding states....

I say put them in a loaded semi-truck, with no training, on a 40% grade down the side of a mountain. If they figure out how to safely stop without killing themselves or anyone else, they move on to round 2. . . which will be more like a Roman Gladiator battle in the colloseum. If they survive that, they'll then need to get out of a Jigsaw trap next, then create a working computer from parts found at a local garage sale. This should qualify them for the underwear Olympics.
