I believe it runs deeper than that. As for budget, isn't our NIL budget about as big as any? As for in-state talent, is the talent in Alabama any better? We have a good recruiting area that extends beyond in-state, excellent fan support, and strong facilities. With the right coach, you absolutely can win big here (just like at Alabama).

To an extent though, you are right. A few schools (Florida and Texas) have a bit more advantages. Fortunately, they are not currently elite.
Texas is playing for a national title right now. They’re elite.

And still dead center middle of the pack in the conference. That’s his point. It’s good, but it’s not good enough.
Are we supposed to go from a middling lost in the wilderness of meatyocre coaches and paper tiger recruiting classes to Bama/UGA level cruitin machines overnight? Even before UGA hired Smart, they consistently won 9-10 games per year. They only fahrd Richt because it was obvious that he wasn't going to get them to the promised land. They still had consistency in their program and just needed a little push. We are having to dig out of a hole that has been dug over a decade and a half of incompetent AD and coaching fumblings. So what we have got is good and now we need the coaches to do more with it so it can become great in a couple of years after we show consistent winning can happen here too.

Its not realistic to expect this staff to recruit on par with Georgia and Alabama. Both coaches have multiple recent national titles to point to.

Other than those two teams, the differences in TN's class and the other top classes are negligible. Going to have to win a championship on the field first to get into that top tier of recruiting.

This staff's level of recruiting is good enough for a 10-2 type season, which is sufficient to get TN into the 12 team playoff.
Nailed it.

You can't just look at raw ranking numbers. Many teams are very bunched up. Being #9 vs #13 is immaterial. You look at it in tiers.

We're solidly in a tier good enough to win at a top level with the right QB.

I used to have 2 Abyssinian kitties. They would do bird calls and squirrel calls as well. We'd find them in the window sills (we had wide ones) up against the screen calling away. They also made different vocalizations for things they wanted. They had a begging sound that was very different from they're "I'm mad at you" sound and their "give me that" sound. The most terrifying moment though was when my girl kitty was in an upstairs window. The frame was out and she was calling an owl big enough to swoop her up and take her with it. That cat was small but I swear she was absolutely fearless. Nothing - not even angry hissing cats - ever phased her.

This your cat Prof?

Ok what are our expectations next year. I'm thinking something similar to this year being likely.

That being said in order to get better we are going to have to get better....... Starts with recruiting, a lot of whiffs to end the cycle. Maybe we can turn one that will really help us before NSD.

Hopefully a good young QB behind an established offensive line can overcome our unproven young wr corp and new faces running the ball.

Completely new, young, inexperienced DB group with what should be a solid d line and experienced young linebackers will be key as well. Think we going to see growing pains on both sides of the ball.
Tougher schedule. Same W/L wouldn't be surprising, but hopefully more competitive in certain games.

I was at 8.7 wins last year.

I'm at 9.05 wins for next year. Imo if we do hit 9 with one of them being a big win, then we're in the playoffs.

They've been 'out of elite' for so long, it may take more than one year in the playoffs. But yes, they are 'knocking on that door'. I wanted their head coach when he was available.
Right.

If we had beaten USCjr last year, would that have suddenly made us "elite"? No.

Maybe that team would have been considered as such, but as a program it takes a few years to build that rep.

See: TCU...Mich St...etc...

Texas has to earn it like Bama and UGA did and they're nowhere close as of rn.

Georgia, Alabama, Ohio State are elite currently. Anyone else? Michigan is knocking on the door. Of course, Elite is not meaningful if you throw too many teams in that category.

Our NIL is borderline elite and is exceptionally well regarded, but total dollar wise it is nowhere near either Texas school and it lags others. I agree we can win, but think about who is ahead of us in recruiting. They usually have one of these four things.

1. Recent success (meh TN)
2. Better in state talent (disadvantage TN)
3. Better budget (advantage but not top 5 TN)
4. Lots of scholarships (disadvantage TN)

NSD, not early signing day.

He’s just saying recruiting isn’t good enough. He said it’s fine if you want to be an 8-4 program, but you won’t win championships with this level of recruiting.

“Good but not good enough.” Is verbatim the phrasing he used.
But, he also said every team NOT in the playoff needs/wants to recruit better. Swain said this class is good, not great.

Imo, Bama and UGA are the only two. Before the last couple of seasons, Clemson had a claim, as well. OSU, maybe Michigan, fall in under Bama and UGA.
