Recruiting Football Talk VII

Look, I’m not sure you’ll ever get what your searching for and contrary to your belief that this is an NIL issue, it’s not.

Tennessee’s NIL has delivered on everything asked of it and continues to be ready for anything needed.

We brought back every top current player our coaches wanted to keep from transferring out. We secured tons of guys who could be on NFL rosters next year. We have brought in top key transfers at positions of need and will add 2-4 more. Very sorry they may not be the super sexy names you want but we got the top guys our coaches identified.

Lastly we have the best per quality of player class we’ve had in 20ish years. We’ve done it with a coaching staff who doesn’t believe in undo pressure on players to commit, over the top promises or anything other than very candid honest connections with players. It’s what they believe in and is what builds our culture and helps us retain. It certainly has us lose some HS recruits here and there as there are many coaches still recruiting like it’s 2017 and making Empty Butch promises left and right and not adapting to the transfer world which is why you see other programs hemorrhaging unlike us.

Also there is absolutely no old school recruiting tactics being done here anymore with the NCAa issues. So no handlers getting cash, no extra visit incentives, no gray area stuff which is still happening in
Recruiting and I’m sure hurts us as well.

But in summary, TNs NIL is the best thing going for our recruiting efforts right now
And we’d love to have everyone join us so we can be as strong as possible.

But we work with our staff and our still well on our way to building a Championship team even if it doesn’t look exactly like @Chuckie thinks it should.

Go Vols!
This is incredible news. Fwiw I also agree with the coaches strategy of not pressuring commits and making unkeepable promises. Get the guys that want to be here and you'll have more program stability down the road. You'd probably just lose those guys anyway.

Again, I'm just going off pre season talk/expectations a lot of people think this team has the pieces to break through.
I just dont see it unless they get some extremely favorable breaks. More so than a usual team.

In 2023, two 5 seeds, a 4 seed, and a 9 seed made the tournament. No teams are making it to the final 4 without some extremely favorable breaks.

That team had 2 main issues

It wasn't as athletic as most, and it would blow leads like no other. When they wanted to though they were as good as any. Could score at all 3 levels, had a super dominant player that could take over games. They were also fearless.

I think the bench on this team is extremely overrated, Phillips and Estrella have a lot of growing to do. FD has been a disappointment, especially with the 6 month head start. Shak and Awaka are fine. Gainey has turned into what I thought he would be when we took him which isn't much. He's a volume shooter, when it's on he's fine when he's not he doesn't provide much. Aidoo, I don't even know what to say about him one day he's an NBA player, the next he would struggle in a rec league. I think the depth of this team is overrated.

Main issue was no depth, you had Bone, Grant, & Admiral and even Bone wasn’t a consistent scorer. It was basically a 6 man team with Fulky & Pons only offering defensive minutes.

But looking at this year’s roster and “not seeing it” is BVS to the max.

6 top 100 RSCI players none of which are Santi, ZZ or DK (arguably our best 3 offensive players).

If anything this team not having a deep March run would be underachieving, their issues have been mostly related to chemistry & experience. Even if Barnes shortens the rotation he still should have 8 guys playing north of 12 minutes.

Bravo - perspective is important

I saw the play and you are correct, unlike many posts on here. The LB was 40-50 lbs. heavier with a full head of steam. What happened is science. That he tried is all I needed to see.
He got knocked back about five yards. Still not sure why the tackle did not at least chip him.

That team didn’t get past the Sweet Sixteen even as a 2 seed…and went 3-5 against ranked opponents (Kentucky x2 & Zags).

Loved that team & players, but 1 shared regular season SEC title was all they got accomplished.

I like that this year’s team, has a far deeper bench and has already played teams like Purdue, Kansas, UNC, Wisconsin & Illinois.
Big test will be this weekend against an undefeated Ole Miss (they haven't really played anyone yet), but I know their coach hates UT and they will be coming in firing on all cylinders wanting to do whatever possible to pull the upset. They can make the 3 all day and have some big guys... We can't have key players going cold. We play a full, consistent game and we win by 10.

The Grant team’s starting 5 vs this year’s would be pretty competitive. Slight edge to Grant because I don’t think Aidoo or JJJ alone could guard him and Admiral against DK or Santi is a mismatch too.

But the next 5, Awaka, Mashack, Gainey, Freddie & JP (or Cade) I’d favor over Bowden, Fulky, Pons, Jalen & Derrick Walker

I think that other team was a more complete team. Scoring at 3 levels, better defensive. Go to scorer, nobody scares to take the shot. Plus which I've said multiple times, I hate huge rotations, I think it's harder for guys to get in a rhythm. If you don't have a core playing 30+ minutes in March with your main guy going 35+ I just dont think its a great recipe.

I'm not arguing that, there's the usual tournament wackiness, and then there's a low SCAR team coming out of nowhere. I just think this team needs more than usual tournament wackiness to make the run

Don’t understand why y’all want to argue with Checkerboard. He hates our coach which makes him hate our players and probably our team.
I think the rub many have, including myself to a certain degree is that year after year, we see a team with a ton of talent that struggles whether it be mentally or physically to play consistent high end basketball week to week. Yes you can argue that with most teams, but we seem to play hot and cold way too often and to the extreme over the past three years. We are looking good so far this season with the addition of DK, but still many players will show up one game and disappear the very next game. I think folks are just looking for consistent play from the top 5-7 players on the roster due to their experience at this point... We see this and they execute, and we can beat anyone in the country.

Barnes has to use and develop younger players if he wants depth. Glad for every minute Estrella gets. Gonna say it again...Barnes needs to get Dillione more minutes. Really think he needs to spell ZZ more, and Dillione would be my choice.

I remember when cherry/spearmint flavored long-cut skoal came out. Cherry wasn't horrible, I guess spearmint wasn't either, it was just too spearminty. Uhg. . .i remember the first time I tried dip. Got so sick at a high-school basketball game, 😂
First (and only) time I tried to dip was a Skoal Bandit during the 5th grade school play. Ended up throwing up in a urinal at Bearden Elementary School. Not a great experience 🤮
