Recruiting Football Talk VII

This comment (unless said in jest, which I doubt it was) is just another sign that this kid just doesn’t have it between the ears. If he did, this is not what he would be saying right now. What is the point of saying this? There is none. If he had the savvy that he needs, he’d say something about making UT fans cheer for a Kentucky QB, or about how we all have our blind spots, or something more light-hearted and endearing — not just endearing to UT fans, but just generally to any neutral observer. Instead, he thinks he’s still in the UK locker room talking about how Josh Heupel doesn’t know “real football.”

If he proves me wrong, I’ll enjoy the ride for the Titans, but I don’t see it.
The entire Titans organization is not really doing a whole lot to endear itself to their current fanbase. One thing that would help is winning some dang football games, but they seem more focused on spending our tax dollars on a new stadium that they can continue losing in.

Some of our fans will never be able to say it because of their personal bias and dislike for Banks for whatever reason. The man took a job that no one else wanted and he's turned a defense around that others, who are experienced coaches, wouldn't touch. Even though fans don't get it, other coaches get it and wanted no parts of working along side Coach Heupel and taking over a defense that was non existent 3 years ago and for tha reason alone, Coach Banks deserves some respect.
In most of the defensive stats that matter, we are sitting just behind Alabama and Georgia, 2 programs that are well established and full of talent and depth. Coach Banks has done a good job and for some reason, that FACT triggers some people.
They decided the first year he needed fired and refuse to give him any credit or appreciate that no one else was willing to take the job. Some fans think that making unrealistic demands makes them the real fans. They lack the ability to recognize that every team has weaknesses that have to be schemed around. Instead anyone that disappoints them must be replaced by someone 10X better in the portal. Think there’s an unlimited amount of great coaches, and they all want to come here. Frustrating

But the thing that VN understands, and Banks doesn’t, is that our CBs suck, so we should just be living in single-high safety, press man coverage all the time. But Banks is a dummy, so he has our DBs play off the LOS. If Martinez could coach DBs, maybe we could get away with more zone blitzes or playing off the LOS in more multiple looks. Or if Rodney Gardner could recruit, maybe we would hold some crappy Big Ten team under 0 points in the bowl game. But sadly our whole defensive staff just sucks.

I think I am going to have to side with the defensive staff with the 3rd best defense in the SEC instead of a bunch of couch coaches demanding perfection.

This idea that no one wanted that job is just retcon'ing what actually happened. It's fiction.

Kevin Steele wanted the job and already had his office picked out. And he had and has a hell of a stronger resume than the safeties coach at Penn State.

Tim Banks is not a good defensive coordinator. I appreciate that you all have tried to fight that fact with pure force of will. He's here because Danny White imposed a diversity requirement, because Rodney Garner is his DL coach who's unit carries the entire defense, and because Josh Heupel seems to have major resistance to moving on from bad coaches. Beyond just Banks, evidenced by Randy Shannon and Willie Martinez.

it's january so this is me not overreacting....

but, i think this team is so inconsistent on the offensive end, again, that it plants that seed of doubt. i still don't know who you go to when you need a bucket. that said, i think JJJ has gotten better. he's been more aggressive this year so far, and that needs to continue. he's too big and athletic not to be more forceful to either drive and score/get fouled, or get it back outside to a shooter.

and i also think they have to find more consistent ways to get the ball inside to the bigs. I like what ive seen from JP, he has real potential and awaka is a beast. Aidoo....just inconsistent. not bad, not great.....but either way, when Tennessee has moved the ball inside out, the offense flows so much better.

but we get stuck just passing the ball around the perimeter....ugh.

anyway...i'm inclined to think that this pre season will serve us well, but if this team wants to make a serious run, they have to find consistency on the offensive end, and they need a couple of guys to step up be the "give me the ball" guy when you need to go get a bucket.

the fact that we can still go cold as a team on offense is infuriating, and in a one and done scenario, that simply can't be on the table in March. too much experience and talent on this team this year for "going cold" to be a thing.

as long as that's still a thing, i won't be surprised at really any result this season. could go to the final four or get bounced in the 2nd round. just, depends....

still not overreacting....just random thoughts i've had watching this team so far this year. i'm excited to see what we do against Ole Miss this weekend.
Every freaking team in all of basketball "goes cold"...jeez🤦‍♂️

Why the hell can we not be glad to have a really good team with flaws? I will proclaim with 90+% certainty that this team will NOT win the NC...I will also say with 90+% certainty that this team could win the NC.

That is what matters the most in a stable program...having the possibility every year because you consistently have good to really good teams.
