Recruiting Football Talk VII

They may WANT another OL, but do they feel they NEED one? If they truly NEED another OL I'll bet dollars to donuts we get one before fall camp starts.
We're probably arguing semantics, but yes, my opinion is they feel they need another OL. Especially with the departure of Mincey. But whether it's need or want, whether we get one or not, they'll make whatever they have work in some form or faction. But it could affect our overall performance as a team next year.

Serious question. Why does he have so little to work with going into year 4 considering they have multiple recruiting classes and the existence of the portal?
It’s a known fact that since Heupel has gotten here, we have been negatively recruited against BIG time by many programs across the country. That’s lifted now and look how good the HS OL class is he recruited this cycle.

Gotta think about it. 2021 doesn’t really count. So technically it’s going into year 3. We still have Pruitts guys. His staff did nothing to recruit any quality depth whatsoever on the OL. You can say it’s an excuse all you want but it’s a fact. As far as the portal goes, I think one of the big problems is the style of offense we run. It takes certain types of OL. I know some fans don’t want to hear this, but it’s gonna take even more time to get the quality depth we need on the OL.

This is the most miserable I’ve been the entire post-Fulmer era

Forget that we reached #1, we had a Belitnickoff winner, beat one of Saban’s most talented teams, won our two biggest back-to-back bowl games in 20 years by multiple touchdowns each. Forget that we have the most hyped young Tennessee QB since Peyton Manning coming back - and we’ve got him for two years with loaded receiving and running back corps. Forget that we’ve put 10 guys in the NFL the past two seasons, with many more to come. Forget that James Pearce Jr is returning and maybe the most athletically elite UT past rusher since Leonard Little. Forget that we’ve got most of our OL back and speed and athleticism all over the defense.

I think we whiffed on a couple washed up OTs from inferior programs and I’m totally bent out of shape.

Heupel is officially on notice!
I needed this. Thanks.

21 no class
22 class with late start with Pruitt fired
23 class had NCAA sanctions looming and negative recruiting
24 NCAA done and we had 3 4 star OL and 1 high 3 star and an instate 3 star
Takes till 3rd year in program for a guy to start and in a perfect world that’s what you always have so you are competing for a championship every year.

So really 3 classes and two of them was recruited with your hands behind you back.

Not hard to understand if you know football.
FAHR NICO!!!

I'm sorry. I blame Hollywood!

That’s if you play by the rules from 10 years ago. You can overhaul a roster in 2 seasons or less now. Excuses won’t win games.

Fair. It’s pretty clear we all would feel better if they came out of this weekend with more depth and maybe even a RT starter. But what we don’t know if what these guys were asking….money, position, playing time, jersey number, who knows. I still personally feel the best use of NIL money is retention of kids you know can play. Who know your play book. And in this case, can play at your pace. The collective/coaches allocated funds to keep Coop and Campbell (and I assume spraggs). Those guys set the market for this team in 2024. If you are a mediocre player from Kansas or UNC and ask for more than your best guys-guys you know can play in the SEC-I would hope our coaches would pass.

As for performance, it’s a good point. There are people on here better skilled at evaluating line play than me. But was Mincey that much better than Davis this year? Again-I’d like more depth and perhaps an upgrade if it’s out there. But Mincey could be really good, or he could be very lazy. At least with Davis you get consistent effort. I guess my point is that while we’d all love to upgrade, I don’t think we will see a big drop-off. And at the risk of digressing, my hunch is that Nico makes them all better because 1) he can play with pace and 2) he can instinctually run the ball, thus improving the math at the line of scrimmage. Heck, JJ looked like a solid SEC lineman with Hooker back there. It makes a difference for those guys.

CJH and CGE didn't recruit these Sophomores and Freshmen to stand on sideline, have faith one of these young men can develop into a good RT...

LT is most important position on OL for a QB anyway, believe next year Tennessee has one coming back...
If you have a left-handed QB, then RT becomes the most important. Got to block well on the blind side.

Prevent with 11 seconds left and got bailed out.
Dumb, dumb, dumb.

Now Van Ginkel looks legit injured. Grabbing knee. Will be 3rd string DE on one end, 2nd string on the other. Just signed Melvin Ingram off the streets and he’s going to be out best DE left 😒

Visual of young Doc in his local theater watching the opus of filmmaking for his 12th viewing in the front row. Hair parted down the middle…buried behind a double layered buttered tub of popcorn and double fisting Juji Fruits into his feeder…cheering on Short Round. 😏
I knew you were stalking me 😂

Dayne Davis sacked Nico in the bowl game. It's hard for me to accept he could potentially be our starting RT. I'm hoping Sham develops enough to jump him on the depth chart if we can't land a RT in the portal.
