Recruiting Football Talk VII

With all the nutrition and technology players will never again look like the beast of back in the day . Those guys were grown ass men . I show my son and his friends videos of old teams from across different years and teams in the NCAA and they don't understand how they looked like they did . Would love to see a coach build his team with old school methods and see how they play with this generations football .
That was the era of blatant blanket abuse of anabolic steroids. The use of performance enhancing drugs is much more measured and goal specific today, not like the wild wild west of years ago.

The embarrassing part for me is I joined when we hired Derrick Dooley. I had no clue people would think I loved jugs. I just wanted a short user name and an easy one to tag. My name became a boob though as Stooley's infamy grew.

Out of kiffin, Dooley, Butch, and Pruitt, Dooley was my favorite by far. Really wanted him to succeed. Great pressers, the orange pants was cool too… I did not like how he alienated former players though

Yep, but still, I don't think it's "willingness". I think it's more reservation on the part of the staff. By that, I mean Heupel is being very careful about "fit" and "cost" not to mention the impact on our recruited youth. I've accepted that we won't do what Ole Miss and Kiffin have done. He's not going to throw a flaming bag of poo into the locker room for one season. I think he's committed to the kids he's recruited. He'll take obvious holes that are due to talent deficiencies or immaturity and fix those with a reasonably priced guy who "fits". He's not going to go wild after a merc like Judkins to the possible detriment of the culture. He'll roll with Sampson and Seldon first. Might not please a lot of folks, but I support his approach. It's the best thing for us now and for our future. Stability is key.
If during recruitment you tell a player that you believe in them and they are sold on your vision and then you aren't committed to them later when they're doing what you told them to do, then you lose people's trust. Before you give up on them they must demonstrate that they have not upheld their part. Trust and belief are strong long lasting motivators. People will lay their lives down for people they believe in, it is much stronger motivator than money or blown smoke.
Heup is very big on relationship and trust.

I think you meant to say “Heupel wearing those gets him 12 games next season.”

To be fair loving jugs is less offensive than the real reason... just tell people ya love jugs.

I agree. It has to be reasonable but I hope they’re also aggressive. There really is an opportunity for us to make the playoff in 2024. I like building for the future, but this is a chance to take the next step now.

I believe Nico will elevate the entire offense, but we need to protect him, and give him some playmakers to throw at. How often does a guy like Eric Berry come around? I think Nico is that special player on offense.

I would love to see this make a comeback. Definitely my favorite of the Dooley years!

Dooley was great for quotes. I watched every post practice interview by VQ with Dooley. Almost every day he had something that made me laugh. We all remember “sack of potatoes” but around that same time he talked about defensive scheme. I’m paraphrasing but it was something like “Yeah we’re switching from a 4-3 to a 3-4 defense. If that doesn’t work maybe we’ll try a 2-5 or even a 1-6, but that 1 really has to be able to get after it.”

DD was my favorite of the Kiffin-Pruitt coaches. He just seemed like a goofy, down-to-earth guy. I hated the outcome of his years, but I still enjoyed him as a person. Pruitt was my least favorite. I always got the sense he was an idiot who conned his way into the job. I bought into the Butch hype, but then realized after about year 2 that he was a used car salesman. And Kiffin was Kiffin, I respected him but I also didn’t feel he was right for the culture at the time.

As for Heupel, I enjoy his style, he’s not flashy but he’s also not an a-hole. He just wants to do his job and coach football.

And Heupel knows football.
